If App had to be perfect to have a shot over a potential 2 loss AAC team, he should be out stumping with facts about the conferences rise as a whole. It isn't difficult to offer a premise and provide some factual data points to back up your argument.

Of course going undefeated is ideal but has any Sun Belt team done this? No. Is any Sun Belt team likely to do this? No. Why? Because most of us have to schedule games with P5 contenders who pay well for us to sign a one and done deal. The AAC and MWC don't have this issue due to TV cash and geography, respectively.

Cincinnati deserves some kudos for having Ohio State on their schedule but the rest of their conference has an unimpressive OOC slate for P5 opponents almost every year.

I don’t need the commissioner fighting App’s battles. I’d rather not leave it up to that. As they used to say in the Marines: Embrace the Suck. We have one more chance to change some minds. Memphis and Cincinnati did not lose to a team they should have beaten. Move on.

I think you're missing the point. While the Marine mantra will work in many instances, specifically in moments of duress, long-term, or otherwise, that's not how things work here. Sure, beating Georgia Southern gets you to where you want to go but there is nothing you can do about it now. You're behind Memphis, who did lose to a team they should've beat, and Cincy who probably should've lost to ECU and could've lost to Tulsa and Temple.

You can embrace the suck after your stump is done if nothing comes of it.

It's also the commissioner's job to fight battles on behalf of the schools that essentially employ them. They are there to represent the collective group. App getting to the Cotton Bowl would benefit every school in the conference, not just App. Therefor, if there is something that can be said, it needs to be said. Not in an Aresco tantrum kind of way but a thoughtful argument with a factual premise and logical conclusion supported by statistics.

This isn't as cut and dry as you make it out to be.

Yeah it is. It’s really simple. Don’t lose to 7-5 sunbelt teams if you want to go to an access bowl. Embrace the Suck.

Memphis lost to an 8-4 Temple who was beat 63-21 by UCF and 45-21 by SMU.

This is about politics and money, things the Marines, as a group, aren't immune from. Things that the leadership of the Marines and Navy has to politik for. While Aresco it out making his point, possibly to some level of effectiveness, the Sun Belt sits on it's hands.

Would App still have a realistic shot had they lost to Louisiana and beat Georgia Southern? Probably not even though Louisiana, conceivably would've been 11-1 and ranked. If App and Louisiana were playing this game ranked, it would still keep on of the two down a peg from both Cincinnati and Memphis.

Believe me, I get it. But it's not applicable in this situation. It's a great rationalization for the disappointment that follows a loss like that. Will it help now or in the future? No. Because is 13-0 ever realistic? No. Generally speaking, there is less than a 0.5% chance of going undefeated any given year. That's why there are only 3 undefeated squads out of 130 in FBS. Georgia loses to South Carolina who App beat and where are they? Knocking on the door of the CFP. There is an inherent requirement to stump here because the committee is very much like a political entity rather than an unbiased group of people making objective decisions.

I couldn't see them discounting the fact that Memphis sold out a 61,000 seat stadium for a mid-season game and happen to be 7 hours from Dallas, either. Either it's about the play on the field, or it's not. It would appear to not be the only factor in their decision making. Hence why discussion of on the field results is needed.

When is the last time App went undefeated? By saying "you have to go undefeated to reach the access bowl" you are admitting to suggesting that App would need to do something not done since probably the 1930's or 1920's. Meaning the ceiling, as it exists now, is NOLA. If that's the case, why not stay in FCS?

And then a second round exit from the playoffs. Doesn't count as undefeated, in my opinion. And App beat a 1-10 Wake Forest team as their "money game". No such games for App in the foreseeable future.

Lets compare apples to apples here. The closest season to this App has had was in the 70's when App was in position to get a Peach Bowl bid. Coincidentally the last time they beat USC.

Are you really trying to make this lame ass argument? 1. The Champ to NOLA agreement has thus far been a year-to-year discussion. 2. If you want to follow an FCS team it seems you like ECU. 3. You're still ignoring my question about why isn't DG going on a speaking tour about App's season?

You jockey for overall respect and let our OOC and Bowl Game records do the talking.

i agree he dont need all out cry foul, but he needs to do a lot of cheerleading and promoting. The idea is to be loud and out there so people can see you and not get lost in the shuffle.

Or, in other words, he needs to be more vigilant about the teams in his conference, in all sports. So far he has been the quietest commish in SBC history.

I went to ECU out of necessity. Haven't watched a full game of their since App v. ECU in 2012. Actually, the only full games i've seen of ECU were against Virginia Tech in 2009, App in 2009, and App in 2012.

Nice try at a dig.

The point made was rhetorical in nature and not to be taken literally.

My issue isn't so much with the Commissioner not pounding the drum (although I think he should have done more).

My bigger issue is the total lack of presence on social media from the league. They put out a link to their releases but not much else. There should be multiple impressions per day via social media (specifically twitter) and that wasn't done during the season.

You have to promote your product ALL THE TIME.

Gill was voted in by university presidents... not the ADs.

It's becoming pretty clear why the latter group wasn't trying to bring him in.

What in God’s name is the “3-8 team” thing in reference to? Who is arguing that? What 3-8 team?

Also he wrote in a text? Is that a joke?

I agree, very unimpressed with this statement.

Reviewing his background and inexperience, you should be unimpressed. The Sunbelt will suffer the decision to hire him.
