Mike Norvell, currently coach of Memphis, is the only candidate on all the short lists who has a conference championship game scheduled for this weekend. For this reason many expect Norvell to be the hire. A name seen on longer lists is Luke Fickell. Now at Cincinnati, Fickell will be coaching on the opposite sideline in that game.

The announcement delay could be helping to resolve questions about James Franklin of Penn State as well. Southern Cal is not competing with the Seminoles for Franklin, and Penn State's Board of Trustees called a special meeting this week to discuss a pressing 'personnel matter.' It could be that Florida State has made Franklin an offer that Penn State has an opportunity to counter.

Josh Heupel, now UCF coach, has an intimidating, 10M-dollar pay-at-once buyout. We don't know how much Florida State officials were able to shake out of the money tree in their recent pitch, but Heupel remains a possibility if they want him and if that tree really exfoliated.

By all reports Bob Stoops got a serious look, but the Seminoles seem to be past that as a possibility. A variety of circumstances on both sides (signing day, XFL duties) favoured an announcement before now.

We'll see.

IDK, I'm thinking Fickell might be a better hire than Norvell... what do you FSU fans think? (Obviously if you can get Franklin, that's your man).

Why not Matt Rhule? It would seem to me that FSU would go after someone with P5 experience. Franklin would be a grandslam but Rhule would also be solid. Yeah Rhule is only 47-41 overall but you have to consider where Temple & Baylor were when he took over. He went a combined 3-21 in his first years but in year 3 he is 24-4 with 2 games left at Baylor.

If I were FSU I would retain Coach Odell over Mike Norvell or Luke Fickell. Norvell and Fickell seem to be fine coaches but I would argue Cincinnati and Memphis have structural advantages over the rest of their peers. It shouldn't be shocking that Memphis and Cincinnati are near the top of the G5 ... it should be normal.

Norvell is 38 years old. With the athletes he can bring in at FSU, you could be looking at another Bowden like tenure. Just fixing the offense alone he can win 9 games a year.

RE: Who will be the new Seminoles HC?
Yes, if Mike Norvell finds a groove he could be there 30+ years if he wants. That's certainly the kind of thing Florida State would like to get back to. Fortunately, he does seem to be the kind of detail guy the program badly needs.

A promising feature of his CV is his record of locating, developing, and replacing coaches as well as players. He's won consistently at Memphis while replacing virtually his entire assistant coaching staff over four seasons. That caught attention, I'm sure, as the challenge of replacing assistants gave Jimbo Fisher trouble. That difficulty played a key role in the program's slide 2014-2017.

Even with the right hire it looks as if the Seminoles are in for a rough season in 2020. They are losing talent on the roster and losing committed recruits. No quick fix for that combination will be found before December 18. The task for now is just damage control.

The new coach will also face a more skeptical university community in 2020. Much good will circled down the drain when the excitement over 'Taggart Time' and 'Lethal Simplicity' was so embarrassingly rewarded. Spectators will take a more wait-and-see approach.

FSU must learn to embrace the transfer portal. I understand Feleipe Franks is available immediately.

Seriously though, there are 7 blue-chip offensive linemen and about twice that many blue-chip WRs in the portal RIGHT NOW - and several of them are available to play immediately. If the new FSU coach doesn't jump all over that...

They can wait their turn. Collins would like a QB and some linemen.

Agree generally, though I’ve never been impressed with Franks and the Gators got much better after his season ending injury forced their hand at QB.

Congrats Noles! Its impressive that he was able to go through the hiring process, handle his team & still win the AAC title, beating Cincy in back to back weeks.

Well, all things considered, I'm satisfied. He said all the right things, the right way, at the press conference. That's all you can ask for at this point. I'm not going to put any unrealistic expectations on this signing class with 10 days to work, but I will be watching closely to see what kind of staff he puts together. Willie's staff hiring was a disaster, one from which he never really recovered. Who knows how much of that was on WT and how much was on FSU not opening the checkbook, but we need to see both better coaches and a better process this time around.

With this, hopefully the Stan Wilcox era is behind us, we've got a young hungry coach who has gotten almost unanimously positive reviews. Within a year or two, we'll hopefully have a real AD, the boosters will be properly aligned with the athletic department, and FSU will be in a good place to move forward.

Apparently Auburn's OC Kelly Dillingham is the OC. Worked for Norvell at ASU and Memphis

Odell retained. Smart move, he is a good coach and can possibly hold together this recruiting class.
