RE: Open Thread - 2019 Football - Week 2
Well, we have an early verdict in on some ACC teams:

- The Syracuse QB isn't for real
- The GT defense is the real thing to watch in Atlanta despite the indefinite no-option refrain
- Taggart is a dead man walking
- Clemson has continued their generally upward trajectory they've been on since the back half of last season. Who said you can only go down when you're on top?\
- Virginia Tech as a program is nearing a major crossroads and decision
- Boston College decided the forward pass isn't in fact the creation of wussies but a tool to be used to score ... and it turns out they're not bad at using it.
- Last year was an aberration for Pitt.

And.....our conference outside Clemson is trash this year.

What’s worse? Beating ULM at home by 1 in OT on a missed PAT or having Maryland drop 63 on you?

UGLY day for the ACC.

For those of you new to the ACC, Carolina might have their best QB in my lifetime. The Howell boy is good and a future pro football QB is what Carolina has ALWAYS lacked these last 50 years.

Perhaps, but perhaps the quality below Clemson just isn't to be find in the usual places. Could be in Charlottesville, Raleigh, Winston, Chapel Hill, and Chestnut Hill.

Sure, maybe. Doesn’t change my point. Ugly day for the league, as we won’t be credited for beating Richmond, WCU, Bill & Mary, Rice, and UNC potentially winning a conference game.

But FSU still gets credit for whooping ULM correct?

It cant be to ugly with only 2 L’s with 1 of them being a conference game. FSU got an ugly W but at least they aren’t Tennessee. Michigan went to OT with Army. I can see Virginia, BC & the NC/Miami winner being ranked later. Cards won 42-0 to bring an end to their losing streak.

GT

Defense: B+
Special Teams: B-
Offense: D

The offense is positively possessed by Reggie Ball at the moment. They are bipolar AF and shift without warning between option run game and shotgun spread and self-destruction.

Pitt made some improvement this week. We will need a bunch more with PSU and UCF coming up. based on what I have seen, the ACC schedule doesn't scare me so much. Although it looks like we may go 0-6 against Carolina since joining the ACC.

There's a lot of discontent among the fanbase right now.

But still, even after being extremely young last year, VT is still something like the 3rd youngest team in all of FBS. Our starting O-line against ODU had 3 sophomores and 2 freshman, then in the second half replaced two starters and we had 4 freshman O-lineman out there. On defense, there are only 2 seniors on the two-deep.

I would hope that we see a marked improvement in this team by the end of the year. The good news is that VT's schedule is pretty soft - the next three games are against Furman, Duke and Miami. Neither of those ACC teams are worldbeaters right now, so we'll get a much clearer understanding of this VT team over the next few weeks.

Fuente's fourth year. You would have thought he would have solved the offensive line problem before now.
If I was picking today, I would choose both Duke and Miami to beat Virginia Tech.

^^^ THIS ^^^

I know the "young" excuse is overused, but this is a real factor for VT, both in terms of experience and strength & conditioning. Young men just get much stronger between 18 and 20 years old. They will only get better.

Now if you want to ask how it got this way in the first place... I'm still not 100% sure. Apparently there were a few players on last year's roster who were actively trying to disrupt the team from within - perhaps with the goal of taking teammates into the transfer portal with them. Hopefully all of those low-character guys are gone at Maryland now.

That said I expect VT will defeat Furman, Duke, Rhode Island, Wake and Pitt at home. I also think the Hokies have a real good shot of beating UNC at home, too. The question in my mind: can VT extend the streak over UVA on the road? I'm thinking "YES". So if all goes according to plan, that's at least 8-4 (not counting on wins at Notre Dame or at Miami, but who knows?). Worst case scenario is probably 6-6.

I don't know about Wake or UNC. They look pretty good. My path to a bowl game is beat Furman, Duke, Miami, Rhode Island, GT and Pitt. That doesn't leave much room for error. We just have to hope that Miami continues to underachieve and that maybe Pitt will be beat up and VT won't be by that point in the season.

I'm less concerned about the QB, who may improve with some additional starts, than I am with the D. They couldn't stop anything. Clemson might be able to hit the century mark if they want to. 04-jawdrop
