Power ranking the ACC preseason edition
Using my gut feelings and the little I know about each team.

1 Clemson - duh

2 SU - coming off a 10 win season and a defense that was pretty good a year ago might even be better this year which they will need to grind out some tough wins when you now have a target on your back.

3 UVA - I feel this is as good of a pick as any when trying to guess who will emerge at the top in the Coastal division. Bryce Perkins is a good QB and Bronco’s boys are a tough bunch.

4 Duke - you don’t have to guess what you are getting out of Duke as they have been a consistent product for the last 6 seasons. They run a balanced, methodical attack on offense and get good (but underrated) coachable players on defense that gets them flying under the radar in most years. They may not miss Daniel Jones as much as you think with a 5th year senior starter Quentin Harris.

5 VT - after a disastrous, injury plagued season on defense they hope to circle the wagons and make it a special season for Bud Foster’s last go around.

6 FSU - closer to being back than people realize. The OL is still a sore spot, but FSU has elite talent everywhere else. FSU could climb higher with good injury luck and there is no doubt the 2019 coaching staff is better than the cobbled together mess of 2018.

7 Miami - I have my doubts that they are better off with Diaz than Richt. They still have the same sorry QBs from last year.

8 NCSU - I’m giving Dave Doeren the benefit of the doubt even though I have not heard much hype surrounding NCSU.

9 BC - I was educating myself by reading the EagleOutsider board and it seems the most level headed posters feel this is a true rebuild year. They still have Anthony Brown and CJ Dillon on offense who will need to stay healthy to get back to bowl eligibility.

10 Pitt - big blow to the Pitt D with their best player going down. I think bowl eligibility might be wishful thinking this season.

11 Wake - I respect Dave Clawson and Wake could surprise some people, myself for example. I just don’t know much about this team.

12 GT - Geoff Collins is saying and doing all the right things. Tech is at their best when expectations are little. Don’t sleep on them.

13 UofL - is the cubbard really bare or did the team just quit responding to BP? From what I remember they had a solid group of WRs to work with and some experience at QB.

14 UNC - I think the return of the Mack will be a slow rebuild. The cubbard on D might actually be completely exhausted.

These are good picks. I dont think SU's offense will be as potent this year without Dungey. Not sold on Devito yet. But think SU still wins 10 games because of improved defense.. The defense is much improved and has dominated the offense all during practice. Really interested to see Miami under Diaz. VT may surprise everyone this season. Also interested to see what new coaches do at UNC, Louisville and GT. Pitt will make a bowl.

RE: Power ranking the ACC preseason edition
Losing Weaver is a big loss for Pitt, there’s no doubt about that. However, it’s not going to kill their entire season — or at least it shouldn’t. It could cost them a win somewhere along the line. It won’t/shouldn’t cost them more than that.

I don’t take any offense to a low ranking. In fact, I understand the logic behind it. However, if in Year 5 of the Narduzzi regime they are struggling to make a bowl game, Year 6 will definitely be a hot seat year, which would be a shame because over the past five years Pitt is tied with Miami for the third most conference wins. If we could beat North Carolina – like everyone else has — we’d be number two all by ourselves.

I am admittedly biased, but I think Pitt gets ranked to lowly just about every year. I think last year they were projected to finish last in the Coastal and they won it. Were they a great team? Of course not. However, I watched all of those games and I didn’t feel like they lucked their way into it. They mostly ran right over the teams they beat.

Now, Pitt has lost a lot of players from last year’s team, but their replacements have mostly been far more highly recruited guys. Also, their quarterback finally has some experience under his belt. He was thrown into action way prematurely last year and it showed.

Personally, and I could certainly eat my words here, but I think they’re going to be pretty good this year. Not great, mind you, but last or near last in the Coastal? That’s not very likely, IMHO. I think Pitt is looking at a somewhere between a 6-6 season and an 8–4 season. Will that be enough to allow them to repeat as divisional champions? I’m not so sure. However, they should be a dangerous team for every opponent they face.

I think Duke fans will be quite happy to see a 6-6 regular season, as long as we take out the Tarholes. We’d like more but the schedule is tough and we’ve already had our best receiver, Jake Bono, go down.

Y’all play Bama and ND OOC and draw SU as your cross division opponent. 6-6 in the regular season after running through that will probably peg Duke as the best 6 loss team. I think Duke is good enough to go 7-5 or better, but the wheel of destiny is a cruel mistress so anything is possible.

Here's mine:

1. Clemson - To win NC and Heisman trophy.
2. Syracuse - 10 or 11 win season.
3. Virginia - Best UVA team in 25+ years.
4. Miami - ?????!?! who knows. Maybe coaching is improved maybe not. Always has talent.
5. Virginia Tech - Pegged as easiest P5 schedule by some writers.
6. Boston College - Looks to surprise some teams in a tough Atlantic division.
7. Louisville - Stages comeback with a real coaching staff but division is too tough.
8. NC State - Has been on a good streak in recent years.
9. Pitt - At least 7 wins.
10. Florida State - At most 7 wins.
11. Wake Forest - Hopefully goes to a bowl.
12. Duke - Too tough of a Schedule. Probably not bowling this year.
13. Georgia Tech - Rough 1st transition year.
14. North Carolina
