Realignment Winners and Losers
Interesting topic we brought up on our show today based on an article Pat Forde wrote:

Who have been the winners and losers from conference realignment over the past decade. You can include individual programs, schools, or conferences as a whole.

RE: Realignment Winners and Losers
By conference the winners are the SEC, ACC, B1G and the SBC.

Losers are the Big XII, Big East(AAC), WAC and CUSA.

Some of the school winners are Louisville and TCU for getting into P5 conferences, and Missouri and Ta&m for escaping the Big XII and getting into the SEC.

Loser schools are UAb and USM for being left behind in the CUSA, Idaho for having no conference home and dropping to FCS and Texas, because they are a bunch of whiny, money grubbing whores that created this whole mess.

RE: Realignment Winners and Losers
UConn was the hands down biggest loser right? Thus this new move back to the Big East.

Pretty much this with the MAC neutral.

RE: Realignment Winners and Losers
Pac-12 was a loser.

WVU was a winner in that they could've been stuck in the AAC, loser in that they didn't get into the ACC, and the old Big East had many of their old rivals who are now separated from them.

RE: Realignment Winners and Losers
The biggest losers in my opinion were all the members of the Big East, plus UCF, Houston, Memphis, Cincinnati, SDSU, and Boise. Those six schools had received official invitations to join the Big East just before the Big East got kicked out of the club that was to become the P5. Those six schools never became Big East members when the whole thing fell apart when the P5 was established and the Big East wasn't a part of it.

Nothing any G5 member lost can hold a candle to what was lost by the schools that were members of a conference that was a legitimate BCS conference at the time. The Big East split up, and the football playing members had to form a new conference (the AAC) to have a place to call home in the newly established G5. Those schools went from having a guaranteed spot in a BCS bowl for its champion every year, as well as a legitimate shot at a spot in the College National Championship Game, to competing with four other conferences for a spot in a meaningless, so called "access" bowl. I bet they had trouble sleeping at night for quite a while.

The teams mentioned above (not including the west coast teams) were still ultimate winners despite the BCS set back. The football conference formed was basically CUSA 1.5, which was close to the most stable and prominent version of CUSA. As time went on they also got a huge pay boost from it. In terms of money, and the G5, the AAC and the Sunbelt were the winners. The Sunbelt is getting paid like 5 times what we used to get paid (Georgia Southern, App State, and Coastal are getting paid more than that, coming from FCS...we basically weren’t getting paid anything at that level). I think in terms of current CUSA and SBC, the fact that CUSA is a considered a realignment loser and the SBC is a winner is solely from the decisions that CUSA made during realignment. It could have easily been the other way around with different choices.

Much attention being heaved on the AAC being the biggest fish in the G5 pond. The access bowl gives the big dog a place at the table. For the rest of the G5 it's arguably a more attractive competitive field to run on. Kinda same as not having to out run the bear just the guy running next to you. The new measuring stick gives hope where there was little now competing for attention among peer institutions. Make some noise in the minor league and you may get some attention. This is why the Sun Belt with it's new money and members and the AAC leading the arrangement are clear winners. Both are enjoying the attention and the fan bases have something that drives them that's fresh and new.

Any team that moved up or started football; TXST, UTSA, USA, GS, GSU, App, UNCC, Liberty are all winners as they got spots that may not have existed.

NMSU and Idaho are losers as it forced them to lose their homes.

It is one of the few times I can call my team a winner and I will take full advantage.

But TxSt won and lost, they moved up to FBS, but it was supposed to be in the WAC and be in a conference with UTSA.

And y’all think the CUSA foot print is big, the WAC once stretched from Louisiana to Hawaii. 01-wingedeagle

That was a bummer. It was weird to be part of a dying conference for a year. Overall, moving up has been great but really wish we were with UTSA. At least we set up a series with them and sell out those games.

Would it be nice to be in CUSA with UTSA and other Texas teams? Yes. Did we lise realignment because we're not? No.

Did we escape FCS? Yes, so we're among the winners no matter what until we fold the team or drop down.

The poor attitudes come from having to live with an AD that sucks. He didn't even want to move up to FBS in the first place. Hard to be optimistic about your program when you know who's running it.
