How Many Living Alumni Does Your School Have, And How Much Do They Donate?
Some one on the Syracusefan board shared this info. Some of you may be surprised. The northeastern schools really need to step up their game.

Either the living alumni totals include graduate and professional students or Carolina only admits long living students. NC State has 7 to 9 thousand more UG students than Carolina with 90,000 fewer living alumni? Somehow those numbers just don't add up.

Maybe UNC counts alumni the same way as they count attendance?

The UNC System keeps good records https://www.northcarolina.edu/sites/defa...port-3.pdf

Fall Census Counts:

1972 NC State 13K UNC 19K
1981 NC State 21.8K UNC 21.6K
1991 NC State 27.8K UNC 23.8K
2000 NC State 28.6K UNC 24.8K
2015 NC State 34K (24 UG) UNC 29K (18.5 UG)

Carolina graduated more kids than NC State until about 1995 or so. Carolina prides itself on making everyone graduate. NC State prided itself on how many they could flunk out until about the year 2010. This may sound like an oversimplification, but it's not.

It takes a long time to make up a 120,000 alumni deficit when you have only been making gains against UNC for the last 25 years and the difference has not been substantial until the last 15 or so years.

NC State was relatively small for a long time and with no medical, dental, nursing, law, journalism, or public health school that meant that quite a few NC State alumni, also became UNC-Ch alumni.

The numbers posted are 5 years old. In that 5 years NC State has added about 28K graduates and UNC about 22K. What is more significant is that Carolina's alumni are dying as a greater percentage than NC State's alumni simply because there were so many more of them.

I would estimate that NC State has gained an average of 2,000 alumni a year over UNC-CH over the last decade. In the fifteen year before that, around a 1,000 or so per year. That's a net of gain of about 35,000 over the last 25 years or so.

I would also add that the amount donated per donor matters a hell of a lot. NC State has a lot of donors, but no Billionaires supporting athletics and very few hundred millionaires. Carolina has a deep bench of capable donars although many are getting long in the tooth. What is classified as a "donor" is different from IPTAY to WPC to Ram's Club based on how the season tickets in basketball and football.

Like I said, they must have counted graduate and professional students LP.
When I graduated there was a shade under 11,000 UG students in Chapel Hill.
Many of the folks are being counted two and three times (UG, Masters. Doctoral).
BTW you forgot to include all of the field hands and cow milkers down on Lake Wheeler Road in your alumni count.

Georgia Tech:

A quick look at the Alumni Association Fact Book shows us that there are 107,818 alumni living in the United States. 50,130 of the U.S. residents live in Georgia while around 11,000 alumni locations are unknown. There are 4,315 alumni living in other countries with the most popular foreign residences being France, Germany, India, and South Korea. This doesn't surprise me as Tech has a campus in France. Germany is a military foothold in Europe for the U.S.. And India and South Korea are big time feeder nations for Tech's undergraduate and graduate programs.

Total raised to date: $71.24M

That would coincide with the numbers listed for Pitt on the graph with 306,000 living alumni.

Duke has 171,647 living alums.
https://facts.duke.edu/

In the year ending 6/30/18 Duke got a total of $517 million from 108,000 donors but not all of the donors were alums. This number is for the entire university, not just athletic contributions.
http://www.ncnn.com/edit-news/10309-duke...-donations

The median donation per alum over a 10 year time period was $32,107. This is not limited to athletic donations.
https://www.bestvalueschools.com/ranking...-spending/

Over a three year time period 29% of Duke alums are university donors, again not limited to athletics.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/schifrin/20...7977d34f0e

By the way, Duke is getting a lot of money from former student athlete alums — $31.7 million in FY 2017 with $10.8 million to the athletic department.
