Eh, who cares about that? I'd wager it wasn't a big deal to you when The Ancient One (an old Oriental male in the comics) was portrayed by Tilda Swinton (or whatever her name was).

The story was good, the movie was "pretty", the actors were decent to good, and I enjoyed the flicks. That's how I grade my movie watching.

Outside of the Ancient one...who else has had a major demographics change to their character in the MCU?

Also, Endgame was freakin incredible. I'm hoping to see it again this weekend with my wife.

Page three of this thread was amazing. Thanks to all who participated.

And yes, Endgame was outstanding; better than I could have ever hoped for. Definitely going to see it again ASAP.

While I have had very little experience with the comics, I can answer that demographics question. Heimdal and Valkyrie went from white in the comics to black in the MCU (but Idris Elba and Tessa Thompson are great so no one cares). In Capt Marvel, Mar-Vell went from a white guy named Walter Lawson to white lady named Wendy Lawson (but I've never read any of those comics nor seen that movie so no comment there). Also, Yinson went from Vietnamese in the comics to Iranian, but that was due to the change in time and setting for Iron Man's origin. And they made Ghost a mixed race female (apparently the character is nothing like Ghost in the comics but I've never heard of that character before the movie). The Ancient One's change was a good one, IMO.

Iron Man 3 was the most affected by this attitude, though I wouldn't call it necessarily a negative. They made the controversial Mandarin change due to fear of stereotypes and more or less switched Maya Hanson and Aldrich Killian's role from the Extremis comics run due to fear of a female main villian.

Also, the Grandmaster changed from a blue alien to Jeff Goldblum.

I don't buy the original poster's arguement regarding demographic changes in the MCU at all. I don't understand the thinking that minor and irrelevant cosmetic changes are a reason to pass on such a fun series.

Now the changes in the comics universe is a different arguement all together.

And I saw Endgame last night for the second time. It was great the first time, but it's better the second!

Agree on that the changes to some of the character's gender/race. It's such a minute/small part of the overall story and doesn't effect any of it. I don't understand how some people are focused on it.

RE: OT - Avengers: Endgame
Most of those changes to race/gender are to such minor characters that most folks wouldn't notice, and even for those who do notice, it doesn't detract from the story at all. The gender reassignment of Captain Marvel wasn't even a big deal to me. I thought they did a pretty good job with the re-conceived character. Mar-Vel was also a Kree soldier, but I liked the switch to an "empowered" human as well. For the record, there were actually more than one Captain Marvels in the comics, one of whom was Mar-Vel's daughter so the new version is somewhat of an amalgam of them (as I see it).

The loose end with Gamora bothered me some and the lack of Hulk fighting scenes in the last battle was disappointing, but I thoroughly enjoyed the movie overall. And who was Keyser Soze?

Carol Danvers was always "Ms. Marvel" after having her DNA fused with the Kree Mar-Vell. That's from like the 70s. Making her "Captain Marvel," which happened in the comics the early 2000-teens, isn't that much of a stretch.

Agreed. My roommate even made a comment about being bothered by the part where all the female heroes come together. Like what's the big deal? I know for a fact that when I catch my gf up on the MCU and she sees that scene she will be excited. I think that's pretty awesome.

That's a weak ass argument. Walk into the last of a twenty movie run that is all sorts of interconnected and get upset that there's a lot going on.

I think you missed the point of the article. The writer is not upset that you had to see all 21 films to know what was going on, the writer is pointing out how ludicrous it is to watch a film that actually pulled it off. There is not another film that has done what Endgame has done and what Endgame has gotten away with.

Re-read this article with the idea the author's mind is blown away with the concept that this movie even exists.

On a somewhat related topic, the new Snake Eyes in the GI Joe comics is now a female. She's badass, too, and widely accepted by the fans of GI Joe.

I guess some people don't like cheesy, contrived writing.

It's like that stupid "I'm no man" line in Return of the King. "Man" obviously means "of flesh and blood" and not "a male person". It doesn't ruin the movie, but it is a small splotch of bright pink paint on a beautiful painting.

Ultimately, the movie studios are doing what they think is best by trying to grow the fan bases of certain franchises beyond white men. That's fine. Just don't go overboard like they did with The Last Jedi, which was just a big pile of lazily-written slop designed to create grrl power moments instead of the things that made the franchise work.

I quite enjoyed this read. I had a similar reaction to some of his points. The movie shouldn't have existed much less worked so well. There is a great line at the end of the article that sums it up. "There is a wonder in its absurdity that makes [watching the movie] a complete delight."

I was trying to explain my love for the movie and series to my wife who has no interest in it (except for the effect on our Disney shares and her beloved Disney Parks), and used very similar words to this line.

I told her the MCU is absurd and ridiculous (both on screen and behind the scenes) but it's the care and love and seriousness with which they have approached the characters facing that absurdity over this past 11 years which has made me an so many other fall in love with it.

I guess I got caught only reading half the article, which made me just like "this guy is a whiny dumb dumb".
