It felt like Troy trying to prove that UTA made a mistake more than Troy going for the best fit for the program.

He's a head coach that has proven he can win big at this level and was the greatest head coach UTA has ever had.

Look at it this way: Let's say there is a coach available that:

* Is young and in his 40's.
* Has D1 head coaching experience.
* Only had 3 losing seasons in 12 years as coach.
* Took his team to the NCAA's once, NIT twice, and CIT twice.
* Made it to the Quarterfinals of the CIT
* Made it to the Quarterfinals of the NIT
* Beat a Top 15 AP-ranked program (#11 St. Mary's).
* Had three wins over P5 programs (Ohio State, Texas, Oklahoma).
* Had multiple wins over mid-major perennial powers (Memphis, Wichita State, New Mexico State, BYU...) .
* Won three conference titles.
* In last three years as coach, had 20+ win seasons each year.
* Had a 2nd-Round NBA draft pick.

Don't you think Arkansas State would probably go after a guy with this kind of resume as well? He's a young, proven head coach that was fired despite having three of most successful seasons UTA has ever seen in his last three years there.

It was only going to be a matter of time until someone got him. Might as well have been Troy, right? I doubt most would think it was too quick of a hire.

I don’t think any of us pretend to have a clue where we’d hire. Honestly I don’t think we’d hire cross. I don’t feel Mohajir would be comfortable taking someone another league school just fired, even if they’ve had more success than we ever did. Too many things can go wrong

cross is a pretty sound coach and got a lot out of the talent he was able to recruit. only in recent years did he have a good facility to play in and a full complement of staff. he built a solid program at a school that isnt very sports focused and I think a place like Troy that is the only game in town and has a more dedicated following will be a better program by having him. I am actually surprised he didnt move upward instead of laterally but he is a guy that likes the close knit family type setting. I think it wont be long that Troy folks will think they got a good deal.

ULM signs 7'1" 250 Center and a 6'10" player. Finally adding some size. Just wish we had Daishon another year.

RE: Sun Belt basketball's future is bright
Cliff Warren- UMASS's Associate Head Coach and former Assistant Coach at Maryland. Solid decades of experience as a basketball coach, including his time under Paul Hewitt when he had a coaching role in guiding a Georgia Tech squad that advanced all the way to the NCAA championship game in 2004. A guy with strong Atlanta connections and local recruiting ties.
Cliff Kreider- Assistant Coach at Rice. Spent time as part of the coaching staffs at Georgia Tech and Georgia Southern. He also had successful stints as an assistant coach at VMI and George Mason. According to Ben Moore, Kreider very familiar with Atlanta recruiting circles. Looks like a good fit on paper.

I'm guessing TXST rewarded Kaspar with some serious cash this time around. Much deserved contract extension. Congrats.

I have to guess that he also received some additional cash inducement, though the press release made no mention of it. Hoping he can continue to build on the program’s previous success.

RE: Sun Belt basketball's future is bright
The good thing about Kaspar is he's probably pretty affordable for what you get. Doesn't jump around a lot and stays in one place for extended periods of time. He doesn't appear to have any aspirations of being anything more than a mid-major coach and he seems to be pretty content with his situation in San Marcos for where he's at in his career. We're probably getting him at a bargain.

There are some drawbacks with that approach too obviously though. We had a pretty long and laborious rebuild. A guy like that doesn't do whatever it takes for the quick fix.
