Serious question about Marshall basketball:

Do you guys also bring in non-qualifiers for basketball? I'm really impressed with the attendance, and if you're doing things the right way, i'll become a Marshall basketball fan until App gets the ship right.

We have zero NQs in basketball that I know of. We get a lot of local/regional kids that other schools pass on. Our coach is excellent at developing talent and we play a very exciting brand of basketball.

Averaging almost 6,700/game right now and biggest crowd this year has only been 7,667 for the WKU game. We had over 8,300 at a game last year so still hoping to get back to that. We haven't sold out (9k+) in 4-5 years.

Yes, our football takes a lot of NQs. I wish we did a better job with it if we are going to take them though.

EDIT: If you like the style of play that the Houston Rockets run then you will like Marshall's style. Our HC Dan D'Antoni is the older brother of Mike D'Antoni who is the HC of the Rockets. Both are from WV and played basketball at Marshall.

Thats good to hear. I find Marshall's "business model" when it comes to football pretty distasteful for college athletics. I don't understand why they do it for football but not basketball, best of luck to the Thundering Herd on getting CUSAs single bid though.

I personally think its blown out of proportion. I'm sure Troy feels the same way considering they take just as many as we do, if not more.

Not sure how you guys are doing it but for us, we will play a true round robin (but we play our travel partner twice.)

After that teams are seeded 1-14 based on conference record. The last 4 games will only be played against teams in your pod. For CUSA the top pod is 1-5, the second pod is 6-10, the last pod is 11-14.

You are locked in to your pod for conference tournament seeding. So the #5 team is playing against teams 1-4. Even if they lose all 4 of those games, the worst they can be seeded in conference tournament is #5, even if the #6 teams wins all of their games against teams 7-10.

Once conference tournament starts everything is normal.

Hope I explained that ok.

Whoa whoa whoa. Don't drag Troy into this.

Larry Blakeney was known for bringing in NQ players. He was an outspoken proponent of it...

Neal Brown stopped it and Troy hasn't been doing it since. Brown believed it had a negative effect on the overall football program. Troy did a big clean up of the program when Blakeney retired.

Can someone explain this? I’m sure it’s in a thread somewhere...

SBC Version beginning 2020.

20 League games

Every team will play each of their divisional rivals twice and each team from the other division once to create their first 16 games of the season

After the first 16 games, teams will be seeded 1-12 based on overall record, and assigned to 4 different pods. Pod 1 is seeds 1-3, Pod 2 is seeds 4-6, Pod 3 is seeds 7-9, Pod 4 is seeds 10-12. Each team plays their pod members twice, home and home.

Pod results will determine tourney seeding, You can't be seeded lower than your pod.

Pod 1: Top 2 teams Advance directly to the "Sun Belt Final Four" at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans. The 3rd place team gets a couple of Byes, but must win a home game against either the 6 or 7 seed to go to NOLA

Pod 2: The winner of Pod 2 gets a double Bye and must beat either the 5-8-9 seed at home to advance to NOLA as the 4 seed. The two runners up get a single tournament bye, but will have to win a home game in round 2, and then a road game in round 3 to make the "Final Four"

Pod 3: The top 2 teams in Pod 3, will earn the right to host the first round of the Sun Belt Tournament, but must then win twice in a row on the road to advance to the Final Four

Pod 4: The winner of Pod 4 gets the 10th and final spot in the Sun Belt tournament, and must win three straight road games to make the Final Four. The bottom 2 teams season will end.

If the 1 and 2 seeds after the regular season are from the same division, it opens the possibility that they would play each other 5 times counting Divisional play, Pod play, and Tournament play.

I didn't know that. I see nothing wrong with it. No different than taking a kid from JUCO imo, but to each their own.

Egh...that sounds bizarre. What’s the purpose of this? What was wrong with the traditional tournament style?

Tourney remains the same (other than the possible seeding circumstances where the 6 seed has a better conference record than the 5 seed), it's the last four games of the regular season that change. Instead of being predetermined before the season the last four games remain open and the better teams are grouped together to hopefully increase the SOS of the eventual champion. In a good year it MAY help get a second bid but not with those couple games alone obviously. The stated objective is to get better seeding in the NCAA tourney for the champion.

The flip side is it could also hurt if there are upsets and the better teams lose any of those games late.

To keep your top teams from getting a potential upset to the last place team at end of the year. To boost SOS by allowing the top teams to play each other.

The main goal is to try and improve the NCAA tournament seed of our representative. Getting a 12 seed gives you a 1.5 times better chance of winning your first round game compared to a 13 seed.

Each NCAA tournament win is an extra unit for the conference.

Still better for the top team to lose to the #3 team as opposed to the last place team though.

You can downplay it if you want but its a crappy way to get a win. I'm glad Troy put a stop to it.

Doesn’t start till next season for us

Can someone explain this? I’m sure it’s in a thread somewhere...

Egh...that sounds bizarre. What’s the purpose of this? What was wrong with the traditional tournament style?

The concept for both leagues is that they admit that at large bids are nearly impossible and focus on getting best seed possible

Goal is to eliminate the situation we had last year when RPI 35 UL played RPI 300 Little Rock to end the season, guaranteeing their RPI goes down regardless of result

As part of the plan we will participate in a OOC challenge series with a guaranteed game against a CUSA and Horizon League team. Also more exempt tournaments for mid majors

You can downplay it if you want but its a crappy way to get a win. I'm glad Troy put a stop to it.

Thought you stopped it because it was detrimental to your program? Which is it?

Pro- compelling matchups in the top tier pod. Conpetitive games. Excited fans. Possibly higher attendance.
Con- the new NET ranking ignores SoS and penalizes teams for winning close games. Basically, the pod scheduling will actually hurt our chances earning a higher seed in the tourney.
