****! Get ready for a hell of a catching platoon in LA. Stan Kasten spin notwithstanding, having two barely replacement level bats behind the plate is a significant downgrade for the Dodgers offense. Corey Seager's return doesn't balance it out.

I don't know what the FO has left up its collective sleeve but so far this off season is firming up the impression that the luxury tax is a driver for roster decisions.

Frank Robinson hit 586 HR and is still the only player to be named MVP in both the AL and NL.

RE: Hot Stove 2018/19
saw this from ESPN story on the DL going away-
http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/25947...jured-list

During recent negotiations with the union, MLB asked to re-establish the 15-day version of the list. The union has expressed interest in a 15 days for pitchers -- who are typically the subject of roster manipulation -- and 10 days for position players.

I like the union idea, and I wouldn't be surprised if we see it happen quickly....

yeah sure does look that way doesn't it?

And you're assuming Seager's return is going to be what he normally is- tough to say that. And they at SS last year were 6th in wRC+ at 118. So him returning- his 2 full seasons he was 136 and 127. So not that much of an upgrade.

Meanwhile at catcher- Dodgers were #1 last year at 117. Grandal obviously was 132.

even if Catchers just regress to 100- that's a huge drop off.

How did you get that from what I wrote? "Seager's return doesn't balance it out", i.e. he won't be able to overcome the loss at catcher.

I was meaning that you can't even assume Seager to return to how he used to be- coming back from injury can be pretty difficult. And even if he does return to what he was before- won't be much of an upgrade.

Other than winning a couple of World Series, have the Marlins ever done anything to engender themselves to the local population?

Losing seasons...constant rebuilds...a stadium that jobbed the taxpayers.

Has to be one of the worst run franchises in all of sport.

RE: Hot Stove 2018/19
Probably wrong/useless/fake, but nonetheless interesting speculation on Harper being willing to take a short term deal, and that the Giants are in the mix if so.

Randy Miller said, rather than Wrote:I think the Giants now are looking at the Padres going in and the White Sox going in, thinking, ‘Maybe we can get him on a contract that’s maybe a short term,’ ...I’m hearing that Harper may be interested in a two or three-year deal now.

There may be some things changing down the road that allow him to become a free agent (when) there may be better offers down the road.

So, I’m thinking that if he signs maybe a four or five-year deal, he’s going to have a couple of outs. But, there’s certainly mutual interest. Harper lives in Las Vegas. Vegas isn’t that far from you (in San Francisco).

I’ve heard that if he didn’t go back to the Nationals that his preference was to go to the Giants or the Dodgers. And it looks like it’s possible now and the Giants certainly have a fit with the outfield fit that they have.

Of course, there's an excellent chance this is all being orchestrated by Boros to juice the market, so probably much ado about nothing.

Interesting turn of phrase. I mean, there are lots of teams who haven't won a WS over the time span the Marlins won two. I think the strange story here is that they did a great deal to engender themselves, and then they did a great deal to trash the goodwill they created.

If I remember correctly, the Marlins have never made the playoffs outside of those two seasons. Bizarre isn't it?

I'm not a Marlins fan, but if I was then I'd feel like those WS wins were a little hollow. I'd want my team to be putting its best foot forward on an annual basis. I'd want them to represent my community. I'm not sure what the goal of any Marlins owner has ever been, but it doesn't feel like they give much of a crap about their city.

Considering their attendance, I'd say you've accurately portrayed the situation.

RE: Hot Stove 2018/19
wow, this is interesting....
According to Jon Morosi of MLB.com, the Nationals are “increasingly wary” of losing Harper to the Phillies, particularly in light of Philadelphia’s acquisition of catcher J.T. Realmuto from the Miami Marlins. The Nationals are so wary, in fact, that a source close to the organization believes that ownership may feel the need to match any offer Harper receives from the Phillies if they think there is an imminent threat of him leaving for Philadelphia.

come on Phillies- make that offer so the Nats can match it and we can be done with it....

Ha my thoughts exactly. This movie has gotten quite boring. If the Phillies do manage to sign Harper, the NL East will be insane. Not to mention it will mean the Giants don't sign him. Giants twiter is becoming completely insufferable. They actually believe that adding Harper and Marwin Gonzalez could get them to 87 wins and put them in contention. Contention of what, I have no idea.

Giants doing a lot of flirting with Harper and I am not cool with it. An enormous contract for Harper means a team with a ton of payroll commitments to average/slightly above average players has to go all in on the next 4 years. How do you go all in on a team with no farm system and a bunch of declining players on sizeable contracts and a 2020 projected rotation of Suarez, Rodriguez and Stratton? I'll tell you how. By doing the same exact thing Bobby Evans got fired for.

This is really curious. Zaidi is a really smart guy. If he’s chasing Harper and, as you note, implementing strategy that looks the same as the one the last guy got fired for, it might not be the GM that’s the problem...

ha. his ship's sailed

You're writing off a 25 year old SS who hit 14 HR last year and showed marked improvement from 2017 to 2018? I could easily see him putting up something like 105 wRC+ this year. That would make him a 3+ WAR player.

how realistic is it for him to jump 25 wRC+ this year? He had a 80 last year. His marked improvement from 17 to 18 was 64 to 80.

also can he stay healthy?

players this young, coming off wrist injuries can surprise you. I can easily see 90-100, which would still make him a good player.

you guys know more about this stuff than i do. but didn't he get traded for like shelby miller or something shortly after being anointed probably one of the next big things? i think, dbaks?, saw the writing on the wall
