Orlando Countdown
It's that time of year again for the click bait Orlando Sentinel to countdown the days until football season. Unfortunately, one of our own comes in at

128. Texas State

Can only go up. Won't be the worst team in the SBC this year.

RE: Orlando Countdown
Well that's not entirely true. We could go to 129 nationally. We could win one game or less.

Yeah that was misleading. I forgot we had 129 this year. Texas State will be fine I'm sure.

While you'll probably be better than last year, I'm not sure you won't be the worst team in the league next year

Here are the candidates.

1) Texas State - Went 1-10 vs FBS, only beat Coastal Carolina on the road, and only came close to winning in 2 home games. The good news is that the team didn't lose a lot of players. Schedule is somewhat manageable, with 5 teams who didn't qualify for a bowl last year, but one of those is a P5 and 3 of them are on the road. If Texas State 'gets better' but not a lot better and cant get it done on the road, they might finish last again.

2) USA - Went 3-8 vs FBS, and has a new coach. Good news is that USA actually has a good defense and returns most of their key players. USA plays 6 teams that didn't qualify for a bowl last year (4 at home). Campbell has some talent to work with. USA's schedule is rough from the perspective of competing for a conference championship, but not a bad one for competing for 'not being last'. USA's problem .... a lack of a functioning offense. Fix that and USA would be reasonably formidable. The pieces appear to be there.

3) Coastal Carolina - Went 3-8 vs FBS with a FCS loss, but improved towards the end of the season. They didn't seem to play a whole lot worse on the road too, which is a good thing because....their schedule pretty much sucks if they're trying to escape the cellar in a disappointing year. CCU plays 5 non-bowl 2017 qualifying teams next year, but 3 are on the road.

4) Georgia Southern - Went 3-8 vs FBS with a FCS loss, but got a lot better towards year end. And they return everyone. But they were probably the worst team in the nation when they turned it around. Plays 6 non-bowl 2017 qualifying teams, and gets 3 of them at home. Their schedule is actually a GOOD one if they were strong enough to compete for a conference championship (Troy, App, and Ark State at home), but if they can't win on the road, it could get ugly.

5) ULL - Went 4-7 vs FBS last year, and struggled towards the end. Has a new coach. Plays 5 teams that didn't qualify for a 2017 bowl, and gets 3 of them at home. Have some holes to fill and need to work on the defense.

6) ULM - Went 4-7 vs FBS last year. Great offense and lots of returning players. Defense is bad though. Real bad. Plays 6 teams that didn't qualify for a 2017 bowl and gets 4 of them at home. I think this is an unlikely candidate for 'worst'.

---

I think all these teams are legitimate candidates for 'worst in the Belt', but if you put a gun to my head and made me pick one, I'd pick Texas State. I think most of the Belt will be better this year (as will Texas State, most likely), but I just don't have any confidence in your coach and your schedule, from the persepective of having a below average team trying to escape the cellar, is less favorable than others similarly situated.

ULM defense looks WAY better. Wouldn’t take much. If we get the defense shored up we are a legitimate contender.

Against an offense it knows inside and out. Likely too early to make that prognosis.

Out of that list I would pick Texas State.

Coastal has Moglia back which I won’t doubt him just yet.
ULM has some weapons and I think Viator is a solid coach.
GA Southern has renewed energy under Lunsford.
ULL has a new coach in Napier who has talent to work with and brings a great background.
South Alabama hired an absolutely stellar coach in my opinion. He’s a winner.

These are my thoughts to the "T". Can't really say anything else.

BTW, I think someone posted them earlier, but here's the SB Nation national rankings for production returning in the FBS:
1. Georgia Southern (3)
2. ULM (15)
3. UL (49)
4. South Alabama (51)
5. Coastal Carolina (56)
6. Texas State (70)
7. Arkansas State (83)
8. Georgia State (104)
9. Appalachian State (109)
10. Troy (117)

Interesting thing is 4 of the top 5 are going to have a different head coach than last year.

I hear Alabama lost a lot of talent as well.

Is that offensive and defensive or just offensive? Either way, a little alarming for "the big three".

It's both, but it's weighted for how strong historically different types of returning starters correlates with changes in S&P ratings.

I don't like that at all. Also of note, I mentioned the big three we're all near the bottom, but Georgia State was the #4 team last season. Interesting that all four of the top teams last season are stacked at the bottom in returning production. It's just another reason I think this is going to be that once every four years restructuring of the SBC powers.

All three of the teams with new coaches are in the Top 4, and ULM should take a huge stride forward defensively.

I think USA's offense will be surprisingly functional. At the very least, Edenfield is going to screen pass folks to death at first since it's a "safe" play.

Lot of us have been saying that both Troy and App have some monster questions to be answered before we can say it'll be business as usual.

App has had coaching turnover as well for the first time since they moved up.

Going to be an interesting year.

Coaching still matters more. I expect Troy and App won't be as sharp early in the season but late could be back to where they were last year.

We had an incredible offensive roster in 2016 that was loaded with experience and guys that made it to either NFL camps or rosters and we got crap offensive results with it.

BTW, if you take seriously recruiting rankings then you should definitely buy GS stock...the conference recruiting rank the last 4 years has been #2, #1, #5, #1.
