I think you have to give it to Martin. Elliot getting a team with Penny Hart bowl eligible isn't shocking. NMSU becoming eligible in their last year in a conference for the first time in 5 decades is shocking.

I wish I had read the thread before I voted. Good cases made for both Brown and Martin. I voted for SE based on Ga State title contention.

I'm still trying to understand why Blake Anderson would even be on the list? Nothing outstanding about this year's performance.

I think it's more just, "everyone else was really bad".

RE: Coach of the year
Not being bias on this because I don't care a whole lot about the awards... but seems like Neal Brown should probably get it.

10-2 season, conference champs, and the biggest win over #22 LSU.

If not Brown, then I'd say Doug Martin. Only because of NMSU getting to a bowl for the time in 50+ years. But the 6-6 record sort of hurts the case.

Same for Shawn Elliot. He was my pick for COTY until Georgia State finished with 2 blowout losses and a 6-5 record.

If we're looking at it all on paper, Neal Brown has the better resume.

I think it has to be Neal Brown. No one, other than a few optimistic Troy fans, expected them to be sitting at 10-2 with their only losses being to Boise and USA. The win over LSU should be enough to earn him this award. It was one of the more impressive P5 wins I've seen recently.

Plus, he deserves props for getting up every morning and willingly driving into Troy, Al.

I believe Martin should get it. He had to do more with less. NMSU only has 8 assistant coaches vs. 10 for most programs. There was the fact that the Sun Belt did not extend NMSU making it harder to recruit. There was the 57 year history of frustration. There was what was arguably the toughest conference schedule with all the top teams frontloaded and unfavorable away and home spacing. There were so many other obstacles I could name but won't because of space.

He had a plan to develop the program and stuck to it, even though it led to added frustration in the past few years. He recruited mostly HS players, redshirted them to develop them, and used JUCOs judiciously to fill in immediate needs. You now see the results with a bowl, and competitive games against the traditional leaders in the conference.

Because he built the program, expect success to continue, unlike Idaho last year which took the short term approach. He deserves recognition for a job well done without cutting corners.

I am very happy with what Martin accomplished. If we are talking about the insurmountable number of hurdles a coach had to clear to have a successful season then Coach Martin is the obvious choice. If we are talking strictly results, then Coach Brown is the choice.

With regards to Idaho, I don't think they took the short term approach (if you are talking about success). I think the reason they fell flat this season is because with their announcement to dropping down to the FCS level, it has adversely effected who they could recruit. Their football program now only has limited appeal with D1 level prospects. Additionally, Idaho now needs to work toward dropping their scholarships limit down to 63; from 85.
