RE: G5 Conference Rankings
Cool site, thanks.

Just to comment: No ranking system is perfect, so there will always be something to complain about I guess. It's just that a system like this gives no real credit to the fact that Tenn (a top 10 program at the time) SHOULD have lost to App. OR that #3 Clemson got a home cooking break on a clear fumble that MIGHT have cost them the game against Troy. I'm not arguing moral victories, but I'd say that those are pretty clear indicators that Troy and App State have improved and are strong G5 programs. Had either of these guys played a Kentucky or Northwestern etc., on those days... we would be looking at about a plus 14 on that scale - putting the SBC into 3rd place. We were dang close to picking up 20 points in just those two games which would have put us at #1 over the AAC!

But sitting back and looking at the conferences, it just feels like the SBC is truly on the rise. Ark State & UL have to start pulling their weight again - we don't need you guys dropping off. Unless it's on the weeks you play Georgia Southern 04-cheers . With a little help from those two getting back to playing their normal caliber of football, we could climb this scale quickly.

Finally, the scale doesn't provide any negative points. For instance, losing to an FCS (or should we say un-ranked FCS to be fair to the teams falling to NDSU or Eastern Washington types?) should cost you points.
While there are scale slide implications for losing an OOC G5 game - due to the fact that it awards points to another G5 Conference - There is no penalty for losses to P5 program. That means there is no risk here to schedule more of those. Considering (as the article did mention) that we have fewer teams, our opportunities to pick up big point P5 wins are fewer. Maybe they need some sort of % application to the point totals.
I mean, the AAC gets FIVE shots at picking up points this weekend alone. They could lose them all and still stay at number one on this list. Feels like there should be risk to the reward. Simply saying that one conference could be at 90% wins over P5 teams, yet the AAC could schedule twice as many P5s through the season, be at 50% and still have more points for it.

Fun article though. Will be interesting to see as we go through the season, hope they keep it up.

Now, EVERYBODY (SBC ONLY!)------- G A T A !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: G5 Conference Rankings
Any rankings system based on simple P5 winning percentages is crap. The Sun Belt's Power 5 games are much tougher than CUSA's.

We don't have two of our better teams playing Vanderbilt and a front-runner playing Kentucky.

RE: G5 Conference Rankings
"The Sun Belt Conference: It’s tough for most to rattle off all of the existing members of the SBC as conference expansion has invited many new teams to the party. For the SBC that’s a good thing! Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, and Arkansas State are carrying the conference and if you ask the diehards, they’ll tell you this year’s conference is as good if not better than the more familiar Conference USA."

Disagree. What is ASU carrying right now? They are the defending champs, but as far as helping the conference against our competing conferences? No. They are not carrying that torch.

FBS OOC regular season wins since 2013:

5 - USA (Mississippi State 2016, SDSU 2015, Kent State 2014, Tulane 2013, Kent St 2013)
4 - TXST (Ohio 2016, Tulsa 2014, USM 2013, Wyoming 2013)
3 - App State (ODU 2016, ODU 2015, Wyoming 2015)
2 - Georgia Southern (WMU 2015, Florida 2013)
2 - ULM (Wake Forest 2014, Wake Forest 2013)
1 - Louisiana Lafayette (Akron 2013)
1 - NMSU (New Mexico 2016)
1 - Idaho (Temple 2013)
1 - Troy (UAB 2013)
1 - Georgia State (Ball State 2015
1 - Arkansas State (Utah State 2014)

Bowl wins since 2013:
2 - Louisiana Lafayette (Nevada 2014, Tulane 2013)
1 - Georgia Southern (Bowling Green 2015)
1 - Arkansas State (Ball State 2013)
1 - Appalachian State (Ohio 2015)

Crap rating that does not weigh for conference members. With every conference having more teams, even an FCS win is going to push them ahead. Quantity does not equal quality.

I agree completely.

To better grade the G5 conferences I would propose
1 point for FCS Win/-3 for a FCS loss
2 points for a G5 Win/-2 for a G5 loss
3 pints for a P5 win/-1 for a P5 loss
3 bonus points for a win over a ranked FBS/2 bonus points for a one score loss to ranked FBS/1 bonus point for a loss to a ranked FBS (unless team qualified for the 2 point bonus)

All conference games are 0/0

After adding up all of the points you divided them by the number of teams to get the conference average.

So using my formula after week 2 the G5 ranks:
1. American (1.92)
2. MW (1.08)
3. Sun Belt (0.45)
4. MAC (0.33)
5. CUSA (0.15)

Why in the **** does Kansas count as a premium game? They seriously granted the MAC more points due to Kansas being in the Big XII than New Mexico or ODU. Not to mention the fact that the MAC has three FCS losses.

Because the whole premise is rank the G5 conferences therefore the P5 and FCS teams must be weighted differently.

This was obviously an opportunity for you to waive the South Alabama flag. Their OOC strength of schedule has been far tougher than South Alabama's. They didn't get anything like the Kent State cupcakery you guys got, and you guys didn't have to run their full gauntlet of midtier to superpower OOC games.

You guys really aren't carrying the torch either. Teams that upset a few OOC teams, but crap the bed in conference are quickly forgotten.

And you certainly never miss the opportunity to take a shot at USA.

I agree that our schedule hasn't been as tough, but we can only play the games we have scheduled. And I've actually seen several Ark State posters state that they carry the torch (maybe not in those words) for this conference. This simply shows that they are wrong.

And until someone wins more OOC games than us, we will be carrying that flag.

Is it really that much tougher? USA had a win over the MWC champ last year, and SEC team this year (even if it's a below average one), a couple solid Kent State teams, and a 7-5 Tulane team.

RE: G5 Conference Rankings
ESPN put an article out not too long ago about the order of FBS programs and their importance (at least to them). Since we, along with most other conferences whore ourselves out to ESPN, there opinion should settle this A-State /USA argument. Those who are higher in the list are "more important"...just how it is... But winning a lot (and ironically losing a lot) builds reputation. The more of that you have, the more ESPN and other important media takes notice.

I agree with the USA poster but mainly I mean to say stAte please stop losing all your OOC and then winning all or most of your in conference games, does nothing good for conference perception... tell your coaches that the season starts Week 1 not Week 5

I agree we crap the bed, but we don't schedule like Marshall.
2012 L's Oregon, Nebraska W's Memphis, Alcorn State (2-2)
2013 L's Auburn, Missouri, Memphis W's UAPB (1-3)
2014 L's Tennessee, Miami W's Montana State, Utah State (2-2)
2015 L's USC, Missouri, Toledo W's Missouri St (1-3)

How many of you would have a dramatically different record?

1. American (1.92)

3. Sun Belt (0.45)
4. MAC (0.33)
5. CUSA (0.15)

With all of the gloom and doom around the Belt board I though I would share an update of my G5 conference rankings after week 4:

1. American (3.67)
2. MAC (0.67)
2. MW (0.67)
4. Sun Belt (.10)
5. CUSA (-1.23)

With the bulk of the OOC games played there is no way Coosa can climb out of the hole they are in.
04-cheers

RE: G5 Conference Rankings
Using the current Massey composite ratings we have the average median for each conference being the following:

60.92 - AAC
84.58 - MAC
86.10 - MWC
92.06 - SBC
100.76 - CUSA

If we were to remove NMSU and Idaho from the equation to see what impact their departure would have we would have these ranks (Note: this doesn't account for CCU coming in):

60.92 - AAC
84.58 - MAC
86.10 - MWC
86.85 - SBC
100.76 - CUSA
