If we were to remove NMSU and Idaho from the equation to see what impact their departure would have we would have these ranks (Note: this doesn't account for CCU coming in):

60.92 - AAC
84.58 - MAC
86.10 - MWC
86.85 - SBC
100.76 - CUSA

I continue to be confused by these ratings. I honestly don't get how 2016 Idaho is hurting this conference that badly. Our season to date can't possibly be a lot worse than the median of the conference.

It may be something like Massey still having some stuff from last year. I don't know...just a guess...

I have a feeling it is the methodology. Adding Idaho and NMSU together, a combine 2-4 against FBS opponents would do it. Dropping just NMSU might even up the SBC with the MWC.

How the heck we stayed ahead of CUSA after last weekend is amazing. They are really really bad this year. They have five of the six lowest rated teams in the FBS....that is like early 2000's Sun Belt bad.

If GS and ArkSt had done what they should have done we might be ahead of the MAC and MW as well today. The MAC has four FCS losses.

CUSA didn't have a great week at all. They lost all non-conference games. Meanwhile in SBC Idaho beat UNLV and App beat Akron to help us maintain our lead. I hate Louisiana lost to Tulane in 4OT...

CUSA non-conference games in week 4:
Charlotte lost to Temple
WKU lost to Vandy
FAU lost to Ball State
FIU lost to UCF
Marshall lost to Louisvile

Here's CUSA's FBS OOC resume so far

1. WKU over Miami (OH). Miami (OH)'s record 0-4 (0-3 FBS, plus a loss to FCS Eastern Illinois)

2. UTEP over NMSU. NMSU's FBS record is 1-3 (UNM)

3. MTSU over BGSU. BGSU's FBS record is 0-3

4. USM over Kentucky. UK's FBS record is 2-2 (NMSU, USC)

That's all. Second best win is over NMSU. Total FBS OOC record 4-30. I don't think any of CUSA's OOC teams looks likely to bowl (Kentucky might). Or even come close at this point. Nor are any of the teams that they beat also beat are looking likely to bowl at this point either

While USA might get boat raced this weekend, here are a few selected CUSA performances so far against weak P5/G5 teams

UTEP lost 66-14, at home, to Army.
FIU lost by a combined 135-33 to Indiana, Maryland, and UCF (all at home)
Charlotte lost 37-19, at home, to Eastern Michigan
Marshall lost 65-38, at home, to Akron

What Toledo or Utah State did to stAte isn't even remotely comparable. Has there been any beat down of any of our teams that bad?. I don't think Boise's destruction of ULL is really comparable.

CUSA in 2015 looks a lot like the Sun Belt in 2005. They might not use up all their bowl slots. I have USM, WKU, MTSU, and LTU looking like bowl teams. Maybe 1 or 2 from the rest of the field, especially if they start to beat up on each other. ODU looks like the most likely of the field. They need to find someone else to get to 6 wins or they're leaving a bowl slot open (or even two). Could the 11 member Sun Belt have more bowl teams than the 13 member CUSA? App, Ga So, and Troy look like locks. Texas State looks somewhat favorable due to schedule. USA and ULL are in the mix.

I am enjoying the unrest on the CUSA board over this. Hopefully there are presidents and athletic directors in the CUSA having serious closed-door conversations.

(09-15-2016 07:00 AM)The4thOption Wrote:  Cool site, thanks.

Just to comment: No ranking system is perfect, so there will always be something to complain about I guess. It's just that a system like this gives no real credit to the fact that Tenn (a top 10 program at the time) SHOULD have lost to App. OR that #3 Clemson got a home cooking break on a clear fumble that MIGHT have cost them the game against Troy. I'm not arguing moral victories, but I'd say that those are pretty clear indicators that Troy and App State have improved and are strong G5 programs. Had either of these guys played a Kentucky or Northwestern etc., on those days... we would be looking at about a plus 14 on that scale - putting the SBC into 3rd place. We were dang close to picking up 20 points in just those two games which would have put us at #1 over the AAC!

But sitting back and looking at the conferences, it just feels like the SBC is truly on the rise. Ark State & UL have to start pulling their weight again - we don't need you guys dropping off. Unless it's on the weeks you play Georgia Southern 04-cheers . With a little help from those two getting back to playing their normal caliber of football, we could climb this scale quickly.

Finally, the scale doesn't provide any negative points. For instance, losing to an FCS (or should we say un-ranked FCS to be fair to the teams falling to NDSU or Eastern Washington types?) should cost you points.
While there are scale slide implications for losing an OOC G5 game - due to the fact that it awards points to another G5 Conference - There is no penalty for losses to P5 program. That means there is no risk here to schedule more of those. Considering (as the article did mention) that we have fewer teams, our opportunities to pick up big point P5 wins are fewer. Maybe they need some sort of % application to the point totals.
I mean, the AAC gets FIVE shots at picking up points this weekend alone. They could lose them all and still stay at number one on this list. Feels like there should be risk to the reward. Simply saying that one conference could be at 90% wins over P5 teams, yet the AAC could schedule twice as many P5s through the season, be at 50% and still have more points for it.

Fun article though. Will be interesting to see as we go through the season, hope they keep it up.

Now, EVERYBODY (SBC ONLY!)------- G A T A !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you understand one fact about FBS, it will forever help you. In FBS, unlike FCS, close calls or moral victories or should have wins doesn't matter, help, make any difference or is long remembered. Only wins count!

Where are those CUSA posters reminding us of the OOC records, it was so helpful of them in keeping us up to date this past offseason?

Next year we add CCU and lose Idaho and NMSU. I don't know what impact CCU will have but if we were to take out Idaho and NMSU as if it were next year already our rating would move to 81.08. Pretty encouraging indeed.

Yep.

But instead of building their own, some wanted to go live off the ghosts of ECU/Houston/USM glory. A "shortcut".

And you guys are doing it with us not helping. Impressive.

One thing I like about Sun Belt 2.0 is the DEPTH the conference has. In some prior years, once 1 or 2 teams racked up some OOC losses, you could probably just pack it in for the season. Not anymore.

ULL and stAte are having bad years, especially out of conference. But others are picking up the slack. Not one team, but three of them. The team currently in DEAD LAST in the conference has a win over a ranked team and a SEC team. Teams that might not be our best teams have good wins (Texas State has a road win at an Ohio team that is probably bowling, and even Idaho and NMSU have gotten in on the OOC win game). And OMG, had App managed to hang on versus Tennessee...wow. Troy came close to impacting the National Playoff picture.

Also, the depth of the conference bodes very well for future realignment protection. The presence of more better teams enhances rivalries, provides greater incentives for teams to stay, and helps remove the stigma the Conference richly earned (although those who played a big part in 'earning it' are now elsewhere).
