From an outsider's perspective, I think of App as an Old Crow song and GS as Hootie's cover of it. 02-13-banana

You couldn't be more accurate. GS is definitely the Darius Rucker version of Wagon Wheel.

Aka the better, more popular version

You are the first non-stay at home mom I've ever heard say that.

How do you know he isn't? That's profiling, right there.

The hillbilly/redneck/whitetrash/inbred trash talk goes both ways and always cracks me up. Though Southern fans would have you believe that they are the classy, tuxedo t-shirt wearin, type of redneck.

We're the tuxedo tshirt, jorts, budlight hat kinda rednecks and y'all are the overalls-with-no-under-shirt, piece-of-straw-sticking-through-a-hole-where-a-tooth-used-to-be kinda hillbillies.

How do I award you rep points. I would rather be the Bob Dylan of that song (who co-wrote it) but we are probably more the watered down pop version of the song, sadly as so astutely noted by my atl night school friend. 03-banghead
You have to hit 500 posts before you can do rep points, sorry.

If we are talking about overall university, I believe Georgia State and Texas State are the most like UTA. Large enrollments, significant Ph.D production, metro areas, significant and ambitious research agendas, lots of growth.

UALR is somewhat similar due to being in an urban area, and Lousiana is somewhat similar in its ambition and research production.

I need to educate myself more on South Alabama.

I believe we are fairly dissimilar to the other Sunbelt Universities. But, happy to have an athletic affiliation with all.

Even thought they're currently lacking football, I would say academically TXST and UTA are certainly comparable. We have around 40,000 students at the main campus - that number doesn't include satellite campuses and online students...and San Marcos only has a population of about 55,000...which is way less than Arlington at 400,000. Although Arlington is sandwiched between Ft Worth and Dallas not too dissimilar to us being sandwiched between Austin and San Antonio.

I honestly think that academically and campus life/college town, TXST/San Marcos compares really well to schools/towns like:

Alabama/Tuscaloosa
Clemson/Clemson
Arkansas/Fayetteville
South Carolina/Columbia
Georgia/Athens
Colorado/Boulder
etc.

We just lack a competitive athletic department.

Well athletically I stick by it, but as a university. I'll stick with my first two lines except for TxSt.

UTA/GSU/TxSt.

Actually your twin is in CUSA. Its MTSU. San Marcos and Murfreesboro are both located just outside a major city, both are roughly the same size and growing like crazy.

Wait....have you ever been to Columbia, SC?

I've been to both Columbia, SC and San Marcos, TX. Don't degrade yourself by saying San Marcos is anything close to Columbia.

Columbia is an abhorrent dump. It's the Detroit of SC.

Don't take this the wrong way, but those schools would never think themselves similar to you guys. Not that they'd consider anyone else in the conference similar either, but those are all flagship universities with high level academics and endowments. I think ECU/Greenville and schools like them would be more similar.

Some of the App-GS connection comes from statements by fans of other schools that GS and App were incapable of stepping in to the Belt and competing immediately. A lot of it came from Lafayette with some from Jonesboro and of course Atlanta

I thought it was because we were both teacher's colleges, have similar student body sizes and academics, and are storied FCS programs that are doing very well in the FBS now.

I like Columbia. It's the closest SEC town to Statesboro and I have tons of friends there. It's better than Athens IMO

I've never been to Athens, but I grew up in Spartanburg, SC (about 1.5 hours from Columbia) so I am quite familiar with it. My brother lived there for a couple years. It's a hell hole.

RE: what team in the SunBelt does your school most identify with?
Interesting question...

It's kind of hard to say I "Identify" with the other SBC schools simply due to the fact I don't have any kind of personal or other quirky connections with anybody. With that said...

-Georgia Southern and App State I respect how dominant they were at the FCS level and also admire the rabid fanbases they have; really thought both Red Wolves and Mountaineers were on the verge of forming an intense conference rivalry (something I feel the league needs more of) but the scheduling big wigs that be decided to rotate both of us off one another schedules for the next two years...

-I appreciate the longevity and shared history we've had with both ULM and Lafayette (I constantly bug our administration about forming a rivalry trophy game with both of them for this reason)

-When I was a student staff assistant on the football team back in my college days, we absolutely yearned to be Troy; their reign as Sunbelt Kings pretty much took place all throughout my tenure at Astate and to see them cruise through conference, win consecutive SBC Titles and go bowling seemed like the ultimate dream at the time. It's good to see them both back on our schedule as well improving; as we saw last Saturday, a competitive Troy is a good thing for the conference.

-Our first trip to Godaddy, the South Al was more than kind to allow us to use their practice fields and football complex for meetings for the bowl prep week. We really got to know the Jaguar staff very well and at that time they were just concluding their third year of football (I think it was their last year as a "FCS to FBS Independent Transitional") and I remember thinking how USA had and still has great potential to become the next kings of the SBC Hill. Whenenver they're not playing Astate I root for the Jags.

-Again much like South Al, Texas State has all the makings to become a dominating force in the league and the missing puzzle may just be Everett Withers. Never been to San Marcos but from everything I read and see online, It's convinced me to make my lone road trip of the 2016 season to Texas State!

-I sympathize with Idaho's situation but I've never had no real attachment or sentiment to them whatsoever; NMSU I was much more on board with them being full members and was disappointed it didn't happen (Hope the best for them in the future).

-Georgia State and Coastal Carolina...on one hand, they're right down at the bottom in terms of having any sort of feelings towards (in the Chants case of course they're still uber new). When they both came on board I will admit I was underwhelmed by the initial announcements but have warmed up to both being full members (the Panthers finally becoming competitive last year and getting into a bowl helped) and seeing how dominant Chants have been at the FCS level I think their is much promise there too.

-For the sake of being thorough and not leaving them out, UTA AND UALR....I know I'm in the small minority but as I've grown older I find the Trojans to be less and less of a real rival; we play them in every sport but the fact is football is king to us Astate fans and UALR's primary sport is basketball and with the Red Wolves program being crappy for so long, my detachment has probably helped fueled my apathetic feelings (with said I very much hope Grant McCasland can make our men's Basketball team competitive again). UTA...Cool to have a presence in Arlington but they'll always be kind of a second thought unless they were to ever revive their football program (which i'm sure will never happen).

NMSU we are both barely in the conference.
Great school poor location for college football even FCS football.
They should be in a conference with UNM and UTEP instead of neither.

Idaho is similar strong academics with two natural rivals in Montana and Montana ST fairly close.
Problem is they both are afraid of moving up even though they have the fan bases.
Also a P5 rival in WSU we play often its the longest running basketball rivalry west of the Mississippi .

So similar in the fact that we could have a great situation both of us but we don't.
