(11-30-2018 02:12 PM)Brookes Owl Wrote:  That's a shame, but I think all of these shows have struggled a bit beyond their first seasons and some (LC and IF) even with their first. But DD S1 was as good a TV miniseries as I've seen, superhero or otherwise. I guess the question is how much if anything gets picked up for Disney+. Defenders? If that's it, I'd be ok as long as they put some thought into it.

I'd say LC S2 over LC S1 but.... Diamondback and Bushwacker both made their respective seasons. Black Mariah was also a show stealer. Shades though... was OG in S1, in S2, his romance with Mariah creeped me out.

JJS1 > JJS2 but more so because Killgrave was SOOOOOOOOOO interesting. I loved the backstory they went through is S2. Both were pretty strong.

IF S2 >> IF S1. I think they did a much better reasoning out of his issues in executing the Iron Fist. The background of him in Kuhn Lun and with his adopted brother or whatever was also done way better. I thought the series was taking a serious uptick quality. The first season felt like it was thrown together to get it out before The Defenders.

As for DD..... I thought all 3 seasons were real strong in their own way. I'd probably go 1>3>2. But they each delivered some great stories. I will say though, that Kingpin was done so well that he kind of made S1 and S3 more so than anything DD did.

The Defenders was really solid in putting the main 4 together.

The Punisher was a good way to follow up his appearance in DDS2. I hope is S2 continues in a good way what they started.

RE: Netflix Marvel Series (thread)
I have honestly enjoyed all of the Netflix marvel shows.
IF was by far the weakest but Season 2 was actually pretty good I thought.
Defenders was a missed opportunity, but it was still fun to see them together. I thought the writing was poor and the story fell apart and got too crazy. I'm a sucker for a good crossover though.
LC was good, but I enjoyed Cotton Mouth much more than Diamondback. I really liked season 2.
JJ was great in season 1 and pretty good in season 2 but her mom brought it down in my opinion.
DD was strong all three season I thought. S1 was just fantastic. S2 was saved by introducing the punisher and Elektra. S3 was just great with Bullseye and Kingpin.
Punisher was fantastic.

Hate to see that these are coming to an end. The writing is on the wall that S3 of JJ and S2 of punisher will be the end. Hopefully they bring the cast over to Disney + or whatever it will be called.

Just rewatched Defenders over the last few days. Still enjoy seeing them come together and interact. I found myself skipping over the Alexandra bits. Her parts were so slow. I really hope they find a way to bring the shows over to Disney.

Punishment due 1/18.

Interesting trailer but I felt S1's remixed Metallica "One" was much cooler.

RE: Netflix Marvel Series (thread)
Finished up The Punisher S2.

No spoilers other than the obvious set ups by the trailers...

As good as S1 but better and worse at somethings throughout the story so it kind of evens out.

The conflict between Russo and Castle goes A LOT DEEPER and gets a lot deeper.

The inter-connectivity amongst Castle, Russo, Mudani,  police chief guy--name escaping me now, and Page gets even more entangled.

The psychobabble about intents, feelings, purposes, and all of that based on the new character introduced is intriguing and thus making a new character intriguing.

The Pilgrim as I guess is his official name seemed very interesting but IMO under explained in terms of origin.

"The girl that needed saving" felt under and over done in some parts/points.

The two grande thematic arcs of the story which are basically Russo's coming back from hell with his personal health issues both physically and mentally and initial sequence of events that drag Castle back into "the life" are very intriguing to see play out.

Kurt as the sounding board for a lot of the characters got a lot more development and a lot more being in it--which I thought was a solid move-- really stood out to me as the best buddy confidant that managed to get out in time but understands what those who are still in it are going through,.

***********

I''ll revisit my Marvel Net Flix rankings after JJ S3 arrives to fully asses my thoughts but I do think they are cancelling these shows they started with too early and I still can only think there is something political and money wise going on between NetFlix, Marvel, Fox, and Disney.

Rankings:

DDS1

JJS1

DDS3

TD

DDS2

LC S1

TP S1

JJ S2

LC S2

TP S2

IF S2

IF S1

While yes, I would put the IFs at the bottom right now, only really S1 was truly weak and they made huge improvement strides in S2.  I think the whole middle of my listing is easily switchable as the pluses and the minuses of each season kind of balance out to being even overall with seasons from other shows.

We're through episode 3 and finding the storyline(s) to be extremely muddled. I'm open to this clearing up but at the moment it's very distracting.

You're reinforcing my fears here.

Quote:"The girl that needed saving" felt under and over done in some parts/points.

That's a pretty weak rationale through episode 3 and our interest is waning

As stated above, if they can't tie these things together in a cohesive way I can't see how anyone would think S2 is as good as S1. S1 pulled you in immediately and held you all the way through.

RE: Netflix Marvel Series (thread)
Season 1 was way better to me. This one was OK, but Pilgrim was wasted to me.

I felt like I was being beat over the head that he is supposed to be scary, but he never earned it. Still never completely understood how he got to be such a badass. At least caring about his kids and family gave him a little depth.

Spoilers*
I really liked the angle of Russo not remembering what he did. Wish they had played that up a little more and had him try to go straight instead of immediately going back to a life of crime. Probably wouldn't have worked, but it was interesting to see how much he truly cared for Frank and his family.
Curtis was great and I was glad to see a lot more of him.
Karen wasn't overused which I appreciated.
Madani had an interesting story as well dealing with her trauma
Therapist was annoying to me.
Amy was up and down.
Mahony was all over the place.

Overall good and Bernthall is still great as the punisher, but not one of my top shows. Season 1 was top 3 no doubt. Season 2 is middle of the pack IMO.

major story points behind certain characters don't really come out till mid way through.
*personally I think they waited to long to get into what Amy actually had on her and why it was so important.

The interconnectivity amongst those gets more complicated vis their own personal issues and their interpersonal relationships. I',m trying not to say too much to kind of avoid spoilers about how some of these relationships get worked out by the end.

I won't say the story isn't cohesive but yeah, S1 was a lot more direct and focussed.

I don't know anything about his Comic Book canon... I am just going on what was presented to me in the tv show and I think that...

I guess he was a former Irish gang member that got out so to speak but those who hired him got him back into the gangster live in terms of being a hit man as he had his tattoos removed .... And whole weird faith thing that he gets drawn in on was just weird...

I'm not terribly familiar with the comic books for the Netflix heroes, but I read that Pilgrim was based on a character in the comics. Apparently he was a lot tougher than the rest of the Irish gang members still didn't feel like they gave me any insight into what made him so tough.

I felt like the faith thing was just forced. Never felt like it fit and they didn't explain how his faith factored into what he did. Besides quoting scripture and seeming loyal to Corbin Bernsen's character it seemed like his faith was not important. He didn't seem to have any particular code and I don't remember an instance where he spared someone because of his faith. Reminded me of Diamondback a little. Not really a religious person, but a cold blooded killer that sometimes quotes scripture.

Well, as of this article, ALL of the series are now done on Netflix with only the airing of JJ S3 left.

RE: Netflix Marvel Series (thread)
Finally finished Punisher Season 2. Took me a long time because it was getting frustrating watching those two completely disconnected story lines. I agree with those who think the show could have been better with Pilgrim as the primary villain. In fact, I'm just not sure why we needed Russo back. Felt a little lazy to bring him back "but with amnesia - sort of" AND make him the primary bad guy. The Pilgrim character, as you guys noted, had lots of potential for development. That tiny little piece of backstory could have been so much more, with the family and his connection to the Schultzes. They kind of wasted him. And I don't understand why Karen appeared in this show. She was basically a Deus ex Machina to help Castle escape the hospital. I think this season had potential but they blew it. It wasn't terrible but I can't imagine rewatching it (I've already seen S1 twice).

JJS3 fires up tomorrow. I hope it is as good as the last two seasons. This series has been the 2nd best overall behind Daredevil on NF.
