NBC running ACCN ends all credibility. I would want the ACC to partner with an OTA ( Fox?) for Th/Sa primetime and Sa afternoon games though.

Almost certainly a false rumor but here's another "source."

RE: Notre Dame to join ACC football
So I read the rumor, and my first thought is...ridiculous. And for basically because there is no leverage in for NBC. ESPN holds all the cards.

HOWEVER...just playing around with it a bit. ESPN already subleases a fair amount of content to Raycom, who then subleases about half of that to Fox Sports. So ESPN "owned" content is already ending up on a competitor's networks (as well as Raycom, which is a competitor to ESPN's syndication arm). This Raycom deal was requested by the ACC in the contract negotiations, and ESPN went for it with reportedly little reservation.

So let's say NBC buy's out Raycom's piece. There's a decent chunk of content to form the basis for the network.

ESPN wasn't airing that content anyway. They would still get paid for it just the same. Instead of being on Raycom and Fox Sports, it ends up on ACC Net and maybe some on NBC Sports. Is that really any more detrimental to ESPN than being on Fox Sports Nets? Maybe it's even better, as Fox is the more direct competitor right now.

In return, ESPN gets Notre Dame in the ACC. I'm going to assume that part of this deal keeps ND home games on NBC, but if they go to a 9 game schedule, that's still several more ND games per year, plus the possibility of ACC Championship game appearances.

But in addition, it further solidifies the ACC and ESPN against the B1G and Fox. It guarantees ND will never end up in the B1G, and it means, for all intents and purposes, no chance of the B1G being able to pick apart the ACC. ESPN, if it values ACC product, and I think it does, may see the writing on the wall with the B1G contract coming up...one way or another it's going to eventually have to funnel some more money into the ACC to keep everyone happy if they don't want much of the ACC's most valuable properties ending up in the B1G. They could do that by increasing payments at the look-in, or they could do that with an ACC Network which is well into negotiations.

OR...they could let NBC foot that bill. They could let NBC overpay for an ACC network, ESPN keeps airing virtually all the ACC content that they do now, and both get ND and strike a blow to the B1G. There might be a win there for them.

And I know I might be making it sound like ESPN values the ACC more than they do or should...but it's not about the ACC vs. the B1G, it's really about the SEC vs. B1G. Preserving the ACC cuts off a major avenue for the B1G making real inroads into SEC dominance, the crown jewel of ESPN's college coverage. Basically, it cuts off the east, meaning they would only have to defend the B1G to the West with TX and KU.

It's still crazy talk...but maybe slightly less crazy than I thought on first blush.

So for discussion sake, does the ACC stay at 15 teams or do we add #16, and who would it be? 07-coffee3

RE: Notre Dame to join ACC football
I will say this for the guy (packman81) posting the original rumor there, he had ND joining the ACC about a month before it happened. Now, he didn't have anything about the partial aspect of the football arrangement, but his information was otherwise accurate, and he received similar mocking at that time. His source (who I assume is the same now) was a Notre Dame faculty member who sat on their athletic committee and it checked out.

Given that, my guess is that there is something to it, but details may be misunderstood or incomplete. None of this means that any involvement with NBC will ever occur, but I wouldn't dismiss the conference (especially through ND) at least discussing alternative ideas.

I tend to think geography for ND favors Cincy but Notre Dame can get to UConn just an hour longer each way than Cincy by Jet. UConn to the ACC takes away the last "low hanging fruit" for the B1G.

I think the B12 then must act and they would grab Cincy and UCF or USF.

The ACC is in no position to harm the Big Ten right now, but they could effectively cut off the Big XII by taking Cincinnati. That's what I'd do if I had to take one of them (which is by no means a certainty).

I'm on board with this -- I do remember '81 posting about ND joining the ACC and I also remember about 99% of PackPride calling him an idiot -- despite the obvious writing on the wall (that being ND's FB trip to Wake Forest).

I won't dismiss the rumor because '81 is WAAAAY more credible than 'the dud(e)'.

AND... ESPN would readily give up on the ACCN if it meant getting more access to ND games (for instance, ESPN has never done a game at South Bend).

Looking at it from a business perspective, one could see an arrangement where ESPN and NBC share ND's home games in some fashion and NBC getting a cash infusion (in exchange for giving up its exclusive rights). I doubt seriously NBC would relinquish ALL rights to ND football.

Some will look at this as NBC getting 2nd & 3rd FB content, but on the surface, NBC could stand to get a good deal of basketball inventory -- something they do not have at the moment.

I would personally prefer Cincinnati over UConn.

The Big XII would pose no threat to the ACC by adding Cincinnati. The Big XII needs to be on guard in the event Texas decides it wants to be #16.

RE: Notre Dame to join ACC football
I would probably just take ND for now, and let the dust settle. See if there is any interest from the unlikely big fish.

If not, I'm intrigued with the idea of Navy as a football only member, and Georgetown as a non-football member. Besides being a good ND partner, Navy is usually at least competitive, would have a bit of a national following, and that combo would be a nice flag back in DC with Maryland gone. I get that Cinci has been better in Navy in football, but when you're talking UConn and Cincinnati, you're not talking about a football add anyway. Might as add all the non-football benefits of Navy at that point. Plus, the ratings that come with the Army-Navy game every other year are not negligible.

My first choice would of course be WVU, which would be way more valuable in the ACC than the Big 12, where they could face Pitt, VT, Louisville and Syracuse. It would add some much needed juice to the northern reaches of the conference. I know people hate them, but that's kind of the point. The ACC can use some football passion. Screw the population size, the ACC doesn't have a footprint issue.

Cincinnati doesn't really do anything for me, but if they potentially think they can get an ACC network on in Ohio, the population there I'm sure trumps every other consideration.
