You're decline under Moore is GREATLY exaggerated.

Even if this was a minor step back, after a run you guys had that should have been expected.

Yep, according to the apologists it's always the coaches fault before when things bomb like this. I guess it's easier to believe a no name, done nothing ever green assistant actually isn't the problem here it's really the guy with Jerry Moore's resume that's derailed this program years ago underneath those top 15 recent seasons was actually running the program in the ground secretly.

or you're just delusional?

You seriously think had Moore coached through this transition you would have won 3 games in the FCS last year or whatever it was, or would be this bad today? Sure bro.

You are getting what you deserve IMO for pushing Moore out after he stayed with you for years with you paying him nothing basically and throwing him away like he was nothing. What you should have done was beg him to coach you through this transition period, and now you got this instead at the worst possible time to derail your program and dismantled it yourself.

Having being intimately associated with this program for 40 years I've got a tad more insight into what is going on than some blowhard ECU fan.

We did the same thing at GS back in 2005. Mike Sewak had a 35-14 record as head coach at GS but our fans were not happy with him and after a embarrassing loss to Tex St our inept AD replaced a head coach who was winning 71% of his games with 'he who shall not be named' and down the toilet we went... I fear that App has more pain to go until they get a new staff to right the ship.

No way dude, we are the crazy ones. Don't you know those last top 10 to 12 finishes under Jerry Moore really actually sucked, and even though he hasn't been there for several years now he's really the guy one that is destroying this program 03-lmfao . Damn you Jerry Moore.

Hate to jump in and say, but there were a lot of things going on.
We do not talk about them. Most of us have tons of respect for Coach Moore
and most of us miss him in our own ways.

Just pull Speir up from WCU. Look at what he's already done for their program

Speir was bound to succeed at Western Carolina eventually. At the time hated to lose some of those four or five assistants he took with him from App. One not so much.

Currently it appears App is running a "Head Coach Apprenticeship Program" in football and basketball.

Fans are so mad that they're lashing out at the basketball coach who hasn't coached a game yet.

StillJonesin, please go back and take your meds.....I enjoy your ECU posts because many of them are educated thoughts.....on JM you are so far off and blind to the truth. JM has been very UN-Christian like in his reaction. He became famous for being a Christian but JM's passive aggressive, childish reaction to his contract non-renewal that everyone knew about, even him, has hurt the school like Joe Paterno.

We just don't do that. We honor their contracts.
Hope he gets better at being head coach.

We can't afford to buy them out of their contracts unlike the big boys. Just look at Capel and the basketball program.

Excellent way of looking at it.

It's a learning process. At ODU, we're learning that first-hand after two blowout losses at home and now watching UTEP carve up the defense. There's no shame in losing early. It's what you do with it going forward that makes the difference.

And don't drive yourself crazy with the football tradition line. It's a different world in FBS, and it's unfair to expect the transition to be easy, no matter how great you were there.

Your mistake is using logic and common sense. Those traits do not apply to a large portion of the App fan base. After the Michigan win they became spoiled and entitled to a winning program no matter the circumstances. Before the season some knuckleheads on another messageboard were "expecting", not predicting or hoping for, but "EXPECTING" 6-7 wins this season. They thought we would just walk right in to the SB and win from day one. Some said we should be in a bowl in two years.

Unfortunately most of our fans do not realize what was really going on. Obviously nothing can be said publicly about how bad of shape the program was in. I mean, say something negative about the great and powerful Oz? Surely you jest. Meanwhile a number of fans have bailed on Scott. Funny how the most boisterous fans are always the first to cut and run, unwilling to support the program in bad times. App has always had a very good core group of die hard supporters. They've been going to games win or lose, rain or shine for years. They'll continue to be at the games. The others will come back, eventually.....

Good post Doug, we've been in decline for years. We were a bad FCS team last season and even though we won the lion's share we had been struggling to get those W's more each of the three seasons prior to last. Last season's poor performance was blamed on the "lost year" due to the transition, now we know better. It's a combination of factors and it's all certainly come to a head with Satterfield. Discipline has been a common problem with our teams for years. We've had way more penalties and unsportmanlike calls for several years now and Satterfield hasn't seemed to be able to get this under control. We use to be so dominating that these were overlooked, no so anymore. I'm certainly willing to be patient and give him his 3-4 year run. It's not like we can afford to buy him out anyways... It's certainly way too early to bail on Satterfield at this point though. We'll know what kind of coach he is around this time next season. He and staff better recruit, recruit, recruit. Priority on that list should be O and D linemen and a place kicker. Improvement is a must and that's not so hard to accomplish when you're already at the bottom.

Time has a way of healing. So I will be ready to head back up the mountain in a couple of weeks. We have issues, but even still, we are two kicks away from being 3-3 right now. One day we will dominate FCS teams like we think we should, but we are quite a few years away now. The adjustment for me personally after this week is that I have no expectation that we will win anymore. I'll be looking for incremental improvement and better execution. Wins will come if we take care of the little things.

We dominated USM and Liberty everywhere but on the scoreboard. Showed flashes at GS. USA played a near perfect game. We're more than good enough to be a 3-3 football team. Let' see what happens down at Troy.

Tradition is big at App. You don't get to stay when you lose AT HOME to middle of the road FCS teams....even if we were still FCS people would lose it.

Sure, but if you stayed in FCS it'd be a different scene anyway and hard to make an apples-to-apples comparison. For starters, you'd ONLY play Michigan out of the FBS, and your run-up to Liberty would probably be SoCon and FCS OOC games. This year, you had three games against full FBS programs and one against a transitioning team before Liberty. Two years ago, a win against Liberty would be crucial to your FCS playoff/bye hopes. This year, it's a dangerous game where a loss means something but a win really doesn't.

Fans of transitioning teams and teams that recently finished the transition -- App, GS, GSU, ODU, USA, UTSA, Tex. St. -- have to be patient and think long game. You'll go nuts otherwise.

I just don't think you will get it, so I will just say this isn't the transition. Most App fans get that we need to let things grow and have patience. That isn't the issue, the issue is that our program has hit rock bottom and no one ever thought they would live to see this moment. The play is so inept that it isn't digestible to any App fans with half a brain. The tradition aspect weighs heavy because that is what pulls you through a transition and should make for better play week to week regardless of opponent. That is why start-up programs struggle so hard, they don't have that aspect.

What's to not get? You lost to a team you thought you should have dumptrucked. I'm not saying "act like you kept Mississippi State to a 10-point win". What I'm saying is that, tradition or no, the grind of those first few seasons in FBS takes a massive toll out of everyone that makes the transition.

If you're seriously talking about cutting bait on your second-year coach because they haven't looked as good as you were hoping for, then that's going to scare off prospective coaches who wonder how little patience you have.

I'm just stressing that you shouldn't stress so much. You'll be a good member of both the FBS and Sun Belt. Just ride out the kinks. If he's truly a bad coach, his time will come.

After further review, I'd like to change my opinion.

Get rid of your coach! Go back two seasons and fire him immediately!
