That's a really cool choice actually.

Unfortunately he's pretty set at UW and they have a fantastic support program there for his son who has some kind of medical condition I believe. Someone in his same mold would be interesting though.

Not a feasible thing I know, just love what he did at BSU, love the underdog kind of mentality he had. I see some parallels w Southern.

RE: So you lose your coach............
There really are some quality coaches in the FCS for the taking. Personally, I like taking guys with HC experience more than taking some P5 assistant.

Sean McDonnell has UNH way more competitive than they should be as a program.

Rob Ambrose made a team (Towson) that was a perennial doormat in the CAA and made them a national power. They would've won the FCSNC last year if it weren't for that machine that was NDSU.

Henry Frazier III took over a Prairie View A&M that has been one of the losingest teams in DI and made them SWAC champions.

Beau Baldwin won a NC at EWU and has been an absolutely phenomenal recruiter.

Of course, I would be conflicted about running the offenses that these coaches run.

Chad Morris was close to being our last selection and we interviewed Mike Norvell at Arizona State. I like both of those a lot. Clint Conque is an A-hole it seems but he is one heck of an offensive coach and is proven at the FCS level.

Will Hall, currently the Head Coach at West Georgia.

http://www.uwgsports.com/coaches.aspx?rc...h=football

Trivia: Coach Hall was the Harlon Hill (D2 Heisman) winning quarterback of North Alabama in 2002 and 2003...a team coached by Mark Hudspeth.

For USA I'd like to get Dameyune Craig back. He was an assistant for the Jags in our first year 2 years, went on to Florida State and now is Co-Offensive Coordinator at Auburn. He also played QB at Auburn and is a Mobile guy that's been a great recruiter in this area.

Brian Bohannon - Experience is in the making. Strong GS ties - Flexbone 3-0 guy....

Jeff Monken - Ok, might take a little bit of time on that one. But Army could be a tough row to hoe. Especially going up against navy who is stocked for the same system. Could strange forces of nature conspire to bring Monken back to Statesboro? Maybe.... perhaps with PJ? Stanger things have happened.

Brent Davis -
I don't get the resistance there. For all the fuss made over conflicts and rumors of discontent between him and Monken - Didn't he still wind up at Army with Coach Monken? Experience.......
Stong GS ties.

I laughed harder the further down the list I read.

Don't laugh too hard, he didn't ask if it happened tonight. In a year or two - things could look much different. Especially if our new scheme doesn't pan out - or if it pans out too good as in if Fritz gets hired away from us. See comments above

Without a doubt Shawn Elliot. Was really hoping we would grab him instead of Satterfield but I'll be fine if Saturfield can rally the troops. Unfortunately for us, I think Shawn is in the running to replace the Ole Ball Coach here in a few years whenever he decides to retire.

Outside of PJ, who I don't think we could ever really afford again in his lifetime (even if he is fired, someone will be able to pay him for the results he averages every year), I wouldn't want any of those guys as head coach.

Our fanbase is so wrapped up in having a flexbone coach as the HC, but I think if we go that direction, we should get a defensive minded coach that will bring in a flexbone guy as OC. That's one thing I like about Coach Fritz, he doesn't seem like he's wrapped up in the offense, he lets his guys do their job. He works with the defense and is making strides to make sure we're better on that side of the ball. We haven't really had that in a long time.

From what I gather, Erk stayed out of the offense and let his guys run it, he concentrated on the defense. We were a much better team in those days too. We were also a much more multiple offense.

I'd really rather have a guy in charge that was better at managing a team than an offense. They just have never really seemed to concentrate on on the whole team as much as they did on offense. Many times we've recruited 12 guys to play QB and if they didn't work out we'd stick them at corner or RB or whatever. We never put the emphasis on recruiting for position like we needed to. That's what you get when you hire a flexbone coach.

Erk wasn't a flexbone coach. He was a DC through and through. He just told his offense to run something that was difficult to stop, and let them do their thing. If we ever go back to the flex (and I would have no problems with it coming back) we've got to remember those lessons from the past.

Not concerned with his past personal poor judgment issues. He's paid for those dearly. Knowing several people that played for and against him, they all are very high on him in his profession.

He's more than able with X and Os but I would be concerned about his effectiveness to recruit.....especially AL.

I agree with all of that, other than some of the things about Coach Russell. When he was around we won a ton of games, but it was because we outscored a lot of good teams. Not saying our defense was not good, because you don't win like we did without a good defense. Just saying that our defense was not our driving force, our offense was.

I don't have a name, but here's what I would want in a replacement for Jones.

1) Under 45
2) FCS head coach/Asst. FBS coaching badass
3) Proven recruiter, preferably in the area.
4) Familiar with new programs

Here's what I don't want

1) Faded FBS head coach that has little recent success at the G5 level (such as Terry Bowden or a Howard Schellenberger type - no hate on them, but they're examples of the breed)
2) Current FBS head coach - we aren't going to recruit one that is really any good unless there are problems with them.

I'm really not an expert on the Asst., FCS ranks. But even after last year, I though Georgia State did pretty well on their hire. Unfortunately, so did UAB

I hear what you are saying and don't really disagree with what you are saying. I do think that maybe some of our recruitment of speed and "Athlete" first may have had a little to do with the number of Scholarships we could offer. So many times in high school, the best player on the field is the QB - so out of HS, we went after a lot of those guys even with no belief that they would end up playing that position at Southern.

Fritz may be hands off on the offense, I really don't know. Didn't seem that way to me, but if so - I do like his people skills and he seems to be a good manager given his "past history" results. Just don't know if he would be willing to replace his OC (IF the new scheme wasn't panning out - And I hope it does) should things get messy.
Also, I'd be concerned with the ability to hire a flexbone 3-0 OC away from anyone else to take that same position here. Almost think that we'd have to offer them the promotion of HC.

You might be right on PJ ( if Tech lets him go) - but When you consider the limited willingness of many programs to run that offense, our acceptance of it and PJ's ego if it just got handed a blow? Consider what little difference in $ might be from say a MAC school to what we would offer at that time (talking maybe 3, 4 years?) I'm thinking the money would be marginal and PJ would believe his ability to recruit in this area would be an advantage and that he would believe (know) he can win at Georgia Southern. This would likely give him his best shot a redemption for those that would be PJ haters/doubters and in state with GT! I'm not aware of anywhere that PJ was ever fired from or any staff that he was on that got cut. Didn't the HC he OC'd for with the rainbow warriors get hired over to Navy? Cant remember that.

TXST made the playoffs exactly twice. In 2005 Tom Herman was our OC. He went to Iowa and is currently at Ohio (OC/QB's)
In 2008 Travis Bush was our Co-OC/Assoc HC. (2005 he was our WR coach) He's now at Houston.
Herman is 39. Bush is 39/40. Both up and comers with FBS experience as OC's
