Our offense will do well. The only question is how our defense can hold up with the lack of depth. I don't think talent is an issue as we have two players from last year starting in the NFL as rookies and two more going to the senior bowl this year that will be drafted.

FWIW I was curious so I did the math...

Vs current SBC and CUSA teams Navy is 20-10 (.667) averaging 34ppg.
Only being held under 20 points in 5/30 games. Not bad.

What is that timeframe? I'm not saying the data is irrelevant, but if you're looking at anything more than 4-5 years ago... well, it's irrelevant. I'd even say anything more than 2-3 years ago is irrelevant given the coaching changes and increase in quality of the Sun Belt teams.

Taking it to the next step, is that Sun Belt members at the time, or the current lineup? Are you counting the Texas State game when we were transitional?

There's a whole lotta variables that come into play given the 30 games you looked at.

Oh, I'm not saying that Georgia Southern will or will not be successful in the Sun Belt. I am willing to say, however, the offense will have little to do with your success or failure. It will all be about execution. If your offense executes and the opponent's defense doesn't, you'll do fine. If the defense executes and your offense doesn't... you'll struggle.

Thank you Madden. Way to go out on a limb with that bold prediction. Lol

I got one. I'm willing to bet that all the games you score more than your opponent you win and all the games you score less than your opponent you lose. Damn I'm good.

smh... 2010-2013 (10-4) 35.4 ppg

2010 - (3-0) 46 ppg
Navy vs SMU - W (28-21)
Navy vs stAte - W (35-19)
Navy @ ECU - W (76-35)

2011 - (3-2) 35 ppg
Navy @ WKU - W (40-14)
Navy vs USM - L (63-35)
Navy vs ECU - L (38-35)
Navy vs Troy - W (42-14)
Navy @ SMU - W (24-17)

2012 - (3-1) 33 ppg
Navy @ ECU - W (56-28)
Navy vs FAU - W (24-17)
Navy vs Troy - L (41-31)
Navy vs TxSt - W (21-10) *Yes I know transition year

2013 - (1-1) 24 ppg
Navy @ WKU - L (19-7) *I tip my hat to WKU for holding them to 7 pts.
Navy vs USA - W (42-14)

FWIW they are averaging 30 ppg this season against FBS opponents. So I'm not really sure if the last 3 years hurt or help your argument.

Why would I go out on a limb to predict wins or losses on a team I know nothing about, aside from about 5 of their posters are boastful a-holes who tucked tail and ran when they were losing, but are now running around thumping their chests after a big win?

I have no argument to make. I merely asked for some clarification on the data you used.

Got it! If we wanted to get technical we'd discuss offensive efficiency rather than ppg. Because we've seen that Baylor scores a million points, but thats also because they are looking to score quickly. They average 15 possessions per game, where as in a T-O offense you're likely to only get 9-11 because they drain so much clock.

I'm just looking forward to next season. Is it August yet?

just pointing out that it was a Captain Obvious kinda statement. It reminded me of a Madden analysis. You see what the offense wants to do here is score a TD. Oh how I miss his deep insights.

It also illustrates how stupid the Georgia Southern posters are for stating "oh, we're gonna come in and show you guys!" as well as the other fans saying "you guys will suck."

The simple reality is that the offense matters little. It's about execution. While it is absolutely an obvious statement, many here (in this thread particularly) seem to ignore that.

Florida had a pretty good D this year too. Our Oline did well against their defensive front.

I agree with that to a point. We just gashed one of the fastest defenses in the country. They were cocky about how fast they were I think and we used it to run them out of the play. We ran a ton of counter plays in this game and it caught UF offguard because we used their pursuit to the motion against them, to a very devestating effect.

But there's no doubt that defenders are more athletic these days. They are also better at lateral pursuit which is where the speed conversation comes into play. We have thrived over making teams run sideline to sideline in the past because the defenses were used to ground and pound/run up the middle offenses with the occasional play-action pass. The Youngstown State game is a perfect example of this. I wouldn't necessarily say their guys were running in molasses, but they were not able to match our lateral quickness and athleticism at all. They stood there and got cut out of the play or we just ran around them.

It's a lot harder to do that these days when defenses are designed to counter an offense's speed advantage. Along with that it's much harder to cut block. It showed in GT's games against Clemson and VT this year. Those guys were just so athletic they were shucking off blocks like it was nothing. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the offense, it just means you have to attack those defenses differently. Go back to the 80s Georgia Southern offenses and the 87-92 Hawaii teams with PJ at OC and see how you can flip this offense around and go full Run and Shoot with a lot of option mixed in. A lot of the formations we used against UF were Run and Shoot base formations, and we were involving A-backs as slot receiver threats all game.

We just have to be more willing to involve passing in our offense, and not be so stubborn to think we can win games without passing. Make no joke about it, we didn't pass against UF because we couldn't, not because we didn't have to. If we didn't have to we wouldn't have tried it at all. Ellison's throwing shoulder had been injured a few games earlier, so his passes were nowhere near as good as they had been earlier in the season. We're lucky that we we didn't throw a pick, because their pass defense is really good. I have a feeling moving forward though, that we're going to need to increase our number of pass plays and make sure that a majority of them are completions. This means we're going to need a short/intermediate passing game. You average 120ish passing yards/game with a ~60% completion and you'll be able to run all over people because no one will be loading the line anymore.

Again, that means nothing. Those that say defenses are more athletic now than in the past are nuts. They aren't. Offenses are more athletic now than before. Trust me, the best athletes on the field are still on offense.

So, offenses have gotten more athletic and defenses have stayed in the neckroll days. Is that what you're saying?

The point I've been trying to make that no one seems to understand is that our offense back in the late 90s/early 00s was at a level of athleticism that was ahead of anything pretty much every team was doing. Offenses have FINALLY caught up to it in the last few years. In doing so, the defenses have come up to that level as well. So now we actually have to out execute/use scheme to our advantage instead of just being faster/more athletic. You just can't do that anymore.

No. It's cyclical. Those that say defenses have gotten more athletic seem to believe offenses are standing still. There has been no change in athleticism between offense and defense in my lifetime. People just regurgitate everything they hear.

RE: Video of the Gators getting gashed for 429 yards
I was chatting with a former Auburn LB at one of my accounts yesterday about option football, Auburn, and Georgia Southern's win over UF. In his words, "yah they perfected the triple option at Georgia Southern. . .it's a hard offense to defend because it requires an aggressive defense to be disciplined on every play, and over the full course of a game, they simply cannot do that on every play".
On AU, earlier in the year he said "yah they (Auburn) are still trying to find their way."
I guess they found their way, run, run, run, pass a little, and run some more !
