Coaching change at La Tech, will MTSU get back to eligibility?, UTSA got off to a good start so they'll need to work hard to maintain that, FCS wins vs FB$ wins won't translate to bowl eligibility in b'ball country...

With three football wins last year, one being Wagner wherever that is barely 7-3, they
may be wishing for the good old days in the SBC soon.

The really funny part is he's complaining about to trips to Troy and Monroe. I hope he enjoys his trips to lovely Legion Field in Birmingham.

No Dykes and no Franklin at La Tech. We will see how good they are in 2013.

Bad analogy. McDonalds is a market leader. Carls Jr. or Kenny Rogers Roasters is more apt.

FAu can't get anyone to attend their games. The sun belt is much better off with teams like ga southern and app state that have a strong fan base and are already better on the field per Sagarin.

RE: Article praises FAU; slams Sun Belt
Writing these types of articles really torques me. Other than the monetary difference between CUSA vs the Sun Belt, there is nothing wrong with the teams that make up the Sun Belt vs CUSA. Look, I thought it was a good move for UNT. But the moment Tulane and Tulsa decided to leave for the AAC, and CUSA bringing in utsa(a newbie), CUSA really lost it's luster. UNT will be able to play Rice at least. And how long before they leave!

Anyhow, good luck on the coming season and the additions to the Sun Belt. Will be interesting how Tx State-San Marcus, Georgia Southern, and Georgia State pan out.

04-cheers

1) La Tech is rebuilding last year
2) UTSA's schedule last year was not comparable to other FBS teams (They went 8-4 by playing USA, Texas State, Idaho, NMSU, 2 FCS teams, and 2 Div II teams). They might be slightly ahead of some of the other moveups, but not so much. We shall see how they finish this year. I'm not expecting much.
3) Appy and Georgia Southern did quite well over the last few years in FCS. Old Dominion is a good FCS program. There's no evidence they'll perform any better than Appy or Ga Southern.

La Tech, WKU and MTSU were good adds. Although La Tech isn't going to be very good this year.
UTSA, Old Dominion, UNCC, FAU, UNT, and FIU were not.

Ark State and ULL will be the best teams of CUSA or the Belt for the next two years.

La Tech, historically, has a good football program. They were a quality add for CUSA period. Old Dominion is just as good an add as App St. and GA South in my opinion. They don't have the history that the other 2 have but they have been tearing it up in FCS ranks and their fan support is absolutely incredible.

Don't act like the Belt has all these great adds as well. I mean, Georgia St., Idaho, NMSU? Now ASU, GSU, and Texas St. are really good adds, in my opinion.

I don't think either Arkie St. or ULL will be as good as Tulsa this year. Arkie St. is rebuilding but ULL should be really good.

So that would mean we would only beat you by what...30 points?

Also, I appreciate becoming the first team returning starters at all its skill positions, and returning its entire offensive line to be considered rebuilding. I guess I never knew that Aplin played every position on the team.

Lol yeah y'all dominated us the past 3 years but MT has given ASU the same beat downs. It's cyclical.

Really not true at all..........last year they were rebuilding.

As far as losing Aplin, anyone who attended ASU practices a few years ago left talking about Philip Butterfield, not Aplin, and there are good reasons. It was obvious to everyone that Butterfield was the better QB, and Aplins would either transfer or spend his carrier at ASU as Butterfields backup.

Granted Butterfield is not as mobile has he was before his injury's, but it was his arm strength, accuracy, toughness and leadership that made him #1.

Malzahn ( who he had committed to when Malzahn was at Tulsa) made the decision this past season to let him get totally healthy, thn let him take over this season. He is listed as a senior he will have no problem getting a 6th year, and his skills may fit Harsins offense better than Aplins.

Of course Butterfield has to beat out some other challengers, all of whom are considered better prospects than Aplin, and there is a little Parade All-American in the mix that will dazzle the SBC no matter who starts.

Bottom line this ASU team is 10+ points better than last years version.

That's totally BS Aplinis the best QB to EVER play at ASU and you are trying to make people believe there was a better QB on the bench but the coaches chose to keep him there.

Then you go on to say there are other challengers???? If you have a QB that's better than the best QB to ever play at ASU and other QB's that might challenge him...WOW ASU must have more collective talent at QB than any school in FBS.

Do you honestly know how stupid those comments by you sound?
Actually, if my memory serves me correct I was one of the few tooting Aplins horn in those days. Not that I, or anyone that watched ASU in practice, or talked to the coaches, thought he could beat out Butterfield, but I did feel that ASU fans who had written him off on The Den, were selling him short. He had grit, but Butterfield had that and everything else.

Aplin, who was actually less talented than his predecessor , was player of the year because ASU won the Championship. The guys at UL, Troy and ULM were just as talented IMO, but just did not have the weapons ASU had, again IMO.

While I do not think Butterfield ( who was the most heralded QB recruit in decades at ASU) will be the best QB in the SBC, he does match up well as far as his talent to the players I mentioned, and has more talent around him than Aplin had, and more importantly a the best OL in the SBC (something Aplin never really had).

The other candidates at ASU have the advantage of being healthy, have played (one has actually played and won at this level), and/or were recruited by Harsin for this offense.

The best QB I ever saw at ASU was Dewayne Brown, but that is not comparing apples to apples.

Anyone who knows anything at all about ASU knows my comments are far from stupid.

I just don't think you like what I have said, just like many here don't like the fact I have said ASU is far and a way the best team in the SBC, something that was painfully evident as the rebuilding year went along last year, and will be even more evident this year.

The only race in the SBC the next few years is for the #2 spot, and the gap between them and the rest of the SBC is going to get wider, and that is a fact. They are the next Boise (and not just of the South), no one else.

Aplin was more successful AND more talented than any QB at ASU since Cleo Lemon.

Aplins talents got him one D2 offer, and that is as far as they would have ever gotten him.

Aplin had the same thing going for him as did Brown, and Hinds........ when surrounded by talent (which showed up for Aplin in a couple of all star games) he was a winner, who had a penchant for making the big plays.

Your QB next year will have far more talent than Aplin.

Did want to add that I got an email from someone that should know that I was basically the only one who said Aplin could be something special on the Den. Everyone else was on the Butterfield band wagon.

They pointed out that I even posted it on a Razorback site, and told them that ASU had someone special at the QB position.

That still does not changed the fact Butterfield was, and is the more talented QB.

They needed a reason to have faith in their program?
They plan to join the elite schools across the nation?

I guess they plan on joining the SEC in a few years.

Might be so when Alabama, LSU and Texas A&M leave to join the CFSC (College Football Super Conference). Oh wait, they're already in it. The SEC. Too bad, FAU. 03-lmfao

Even though what the author of this article stated is true, there are things that are better left unsaid. I don't see the need for him to have to criticize the SB to praise C-USA. That was uncalled for.

I'd hate FAU's last day in the SBC be surrounded with this laughable article. FAU fans love the Sun Belt, and we have the upmost respect for the conference and it's programs.
Thanks. Writers like that can do a lot of damage and they usually are the ones who haven't a clue about what they write.

Bumping because people actually think FAU fans are attacking the SBC.
Seriously, for years, including the time we said we will be going to the SBC, have we ever said a bad thing about this conference? No real FAU fan would ever disrespect the Sun Belt, and it's a shame that most of the SBC's newbies think we would.

BUMP for reason listed above.

5 wins were against non-full 1-A members. UTSA's lower level wins were against D2 TA&M-Commerce (27-16), D2 NW Oklahoma St (56-3), 1-AA McNeese (31-24), 1-AA Geo St (38-14) and 1-A transitioning South Aabama (33-31). Their 1-A wins were against 1-11 New Mexico St (35-14), 1-11 Idaho (34-27) and 4-8 Texas State (38-31). Likely, they will be better, but I don't know if their record will be against higher level talent.

As for La Tech...

Historically in the SLC, sure, but as a 1-A?
2012 9-3
2011 8-5
2010 5-8
2009 4-8
2008 8-5
2007 5-7

2005 7-5
2004 6-6
2003 5-7

2001 7-5
2000 3-9
1999 8-3

1993 3-8
1992 5-6
1991 8-1-2
1990 8-3-1
1989 4-6

In 24 seasons, they have 10 winning seasons. More recently, they have three winning seasons in the last seven. Not quite a replacement for Houston, but maybe Memphis.

While you're drinking your coffee, consider both conferences saw a mass exodus.

One of them took three underperforming programs off the others hands while losing five of their top six programs.

Both are in decline, but CUSA fell further from where they were respectively.

three under performing members? FIU FAU and UNT? They might be down, but each have much to bring to a conference. UNT has made unbelievable improvements to facillities, and can compete in bball. FIU and FAU have lots of success in football (fau in baseball too). CUSA also added great schools like LaTech UNCC and ODU.
