RE: Expansion rumors
Only reason CUSA is considering going to 16 is because they screwed up chasing tv markets and now with payouts based on performance they feel threatened by the SBC that added some solid football programs.

Banowsky is tring to avoid the heat coming in a couple of years when his selections don't pan out.

They should be concerned. It may well be that their smallest market addition (LaTech) may prove to be their best addition.

(04-21-2013 11:05 AM)ark30inf Wrote:  So many people say this and its not true. Realignment is not an endless conveyor belt. The SEC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac 12 are not going to keep adding until they get to a 100. The number of possible slots are VERY limited.

The slots in every FBS conference are going to be completely full up at some point and the conveyor belt will lock up and movement will stop.

Some school who dreams of the SEC is going to be left just outside the door....pretty much forever. Some FCS school who dreams of an FBS move-up will be left outside the door....possibly for a generation.

You have a limited number of FBS conferences with a limited number of slots each. You might have some minimal jockeying around at the lower levels like you did when Temple got kicked. But they will be extraordinary cases.

I don't see any of the majors dissolving in the future. I think it is highly unlikely that any of the majors drop teams in the future no matter how much regret they might have. Wake Forest, Vandy, Miss State, Indiana, Oregon State, and Baylor are most likely not going anywhere. Once those slots at the upper levels are filled they tend to stick for a very long time.

Even if mighty FIU starts selling out every game, builds a state of the art stadium that rivals everything in FBS, wins National Championships, and gets on tv every week and rakes in the money they will not move because there will be no slots available to move to without kicking a Vandy or Indiana out. Won't happen.

The bottom line is that you will find yourself in a conference at some point that will probably be your home for a long time. The "pecking order" won't mean nearly as much. At that point it will be time to stop wishing, hoping, begging, and griping and focus on unity and a long-term strategy for moving up the conference rankings instead.

In the words of The Eagles "There is no more new frontier, we have got to make it here."

We MIGHT be at that point right now and just don't know it. I won't be surprised if there are a few more moves and I won't be surprised if there aren't any at all.

I wouldn't be so sure. Historically speaking, conferences over 12 generally change at some point. 14- and 16-team conferences are just too unstable. There are too many voices and mouths to feed.

The WAC was fairly geographically compact when it was at 16. Instead of losing schools, half broke off into the Mountain West. The Big East went to 18 schools. The C7 broke off into a new conference.

There used to be a relatively strong three-way rivalry between Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri. Now all three are in a different conferences.

The only BCS conference I see staying stable is the Pac-#. There are quality teams in the current footprint, which is relatively (by western standards) compact. Meanwhile, Missouri is in the conference titled Southeast (and in the eastern division no , West Virginia is in the midwest, Maryland and Rutgers are in the Rust Belt. The ACC is no longer Atlantic focused (Indiana?) and runs from the northeast to southeast with teams in the midwest. There's talk of teams from Florida and the Carolinas going to either the Big 12 and/or Big 10.

At some point there will be a saturation point. At some point, schools like Missouri, West Virginia, Boston College will realize they may get a bit more money, but are spending a bunch and have no rivalries (which is the lifeblood of college athletics) and the product is withering.

It may be gradual, it may be a flashpoint (Ark State, La Tech and Lamar all left the SLC in part because UTA dropped their football program) or it may be like the C7 where a group of schools in one conference decide they aren't getting what they need. Point is, we are entering a mass amount of realignment that has historically proven to be unstable. Defending the whole process's as eventually ending stable might be a little silly.

(04-21-2013 11:19 AM)Tom in Lazybrook Wrote:  The reality is that many of the biggie conferences (and some of the smaller ones) have exit fees that are getting out of control. 50 million to leave the ACC. No home games on TV for 5 years for leaving the Big XII. The universe of teams willing or able to pay these penalties is quite small.

Lets recap

1) SEC - Its highly unlikly anyone will leave this conference. Perhaps Mizzou, but its unlikely.
2) Big XII - There is a grant of TV rights for any team leaving. What that means is that if say Oklahoma State bolts for the PAC12 is that the Big XII will own their TV rights for 5 years. No home TV games for any team leaving for 5 years. And financial penalties.
3) B1G - Unlikely any team would leave.
4) ACC - Many teams might wish to leave, but severe penalties exist for teams bolting.
5) PAC12 - No one is leaving this conference.

The Mountain West is kind of out of it due to geography. Boise or SDSU might be usable to the Big XII or the PAC, but I just don't see that.

So unless you want to pony up 50 million in exit fees to leave the ACC, no one is going anywhere up top.
There are exactly three programs out there that are viable for a BCS upgrade on the table right now, BYU, Uconn, and Cincy.

I think that unless CUSA feels like going to 16, or the MAC wants to go to 14, that there are likely no more than three slots for FCS teams to move up. One from the Belt now and potentially two more if the Big XII decides to go to 12. That's all folks.

Sounds good, until you consider no team in this whole process has actually paid much of anything. No Big East team paid their exit fee, at least in full. Notre Dame is one of the few teams actually sitting out the 27 months. Maryland won't pay their 50 million and any team that does want to switch will just get their lawyers out.

I don't think Mizzou's happiness with its divisional alignment is a major driver in conference realignment.

One team can start the whole thing. Nebraska leaving the Big 12 for the Big 10 started this latest round.

I don't know if they will grow to 16 or not. There are too many agendas out there.

Do you want to split the money? Do you want to lessen your chances of winning a conference championship? Do you want to give up a rivalry when your divisions get realigned? Can this or that school even get enough votes? Is this school AAC or will we have to lower our academic nose? Is this conference too "redneck" for us to join? Is the candidate school an absolute "we don't want to associate with" for some member?

This whole thing has been stupid because of all the different agendas.

Going to 16 is a pretty big long-term commitment for conferences that don't make a habit of kicking schools out. Does Texas really want to be buried in a conference of 16? I'm not sure.

Auburn will go to the East.

Auburn will go to the East.

Auburn in the East with a 16 team conference means Alabama would lose either Tennessee or Auburn on the schedule. And I don't see that happening.

Auburn in the East with a 16 team conference means Alabama would lose either Tennessee or Auburn on the schedule. And I don't see that happening.

The SEC would have one less OOC game. Alabama/Auburn and Alabama/Tennesse would be designated rivals. Plus Auburn and Tennessee would play each other every year.

12 game season - 14 members

7 team division = 6 divisional games
= 2 designated interdivisional
= 2 other division game
= 2 out of conference game

That is how I would organize.

SEC West

Alabama
Arkansas
Louisiana State
Mississippi
Mississippi State
Missouri
Texas A&M

SEC East

Auburn
Florida
Georgia
Kentucky
South Carolina
Tennessee
Vanderbilt

12 game season - 16 members (including Florida State and Louisville)

8 team division = 7 divisional games
= 2 designated interdivisional
= 1 other division game
= 2 out of conference game

This is how I would organize a 16 member SEC.

SEC West

Alabama
Auburn
Arkansas
Louisiana State
Mississippi
Mississippi State
Missouri
Texas A&M

SEC East

Florida
Florida State
Georgia
Kentucky
Louisville
South Carolina
Tennessee
Vanderbilt

RE: Expansion rumors
FloridaJag, the problem with a 16 team SEC is that these teams would have 7 division games to play. Currently they play 8 total conference games meaning there is room for only one cross divisional game. This is the reason Alabama would lose either Auburn or Tennessee as a rival (if both were in the East and Alabama was in the West). The SEC teams are NOT going to go to a 9 game SEC schedule without resistance, and even still Alabama would lose either Auburn or Tennessee in the scenario above because one slot will be a rotating slot. Alabama fans only getting to play Auburn or Tennessee ever 8 years won't cut it. But this also means each team will lose a home game every other year. That costs them money. It also puts another SEC team on the schedule, and it's hard enough to get through the SEC as it is. This will be difficult to pass. I'm not saying the SEC won't go to 16 teams eventually. But if they do, look for some creative scheduling ideas to come about.

Where in his post did he talk about Southern running the SBC? He was talking about how the CUSA messed up this stage of realignment and the SBC as a whole will be the superior conference.

I have yet to figure out why so many C-USA people hang out in the SBC board. Other then they know thier board is dead because they have run that board with an iron hand and no one enjoys it.

UNCC guy, you would have been banned from your own board for saying some of the things you have said on this board. But we don't mind the others opinion, weather we asked for them or not. So enjoy your time on the SBC board, and enjoy wishing you were in this conference over the next few years. 05-stirthepot

I'm quite happy to be in CUSA. The basketball quality is way better in CUSA than in the SBC and I care far more about basketball than I do football.

Also I come here just to read about sports. I read other boards here too. I imagine Charlotte will probably have several OOC games against SBC schools once we transition to FBS, so I like to see what is going on.

It's because of the constant drama that GSU_Eagles and Walter Something bring. Every thread is dedicated to proclaiming the greatness of georgia south and we're just soaking it up waiting until 2014. Their delusion is entertaining...that I will admit.

I heard Liberty is joining the Sun Belt!!! Announcement coming soon!

Thank you Sun Belt!!

Remember, if you have a son and he's borderline special, he can still get into Liberty and get a degree. They do serve a purpose.

But thank you, seriously, thank you.
