Dekalb...saturday edition
8 pm eastern start on Saturday for the Broncos.

Not sure what I think about the Huskies right now. I know how I feel about our chances...but as a program I am not convinced NIU has the young players to be a factor in the MAC over the next couple of years. Last year was a rebuilding year for them and they showed some promise. Not with their record, but with their style of play. Monty has them playing defense and rebounding. They are short on offensive skills though. I thought this year would be a productive step up, and it still could be for the Huskies. However, their progress was derailed at the beginning of the season when their star Nader was suspended for the first 7 games of the season. He hasn't been lights out since his return, although he scores at a decent clip.

I still am baffled how NIU got Highsmith in their 2013 class. I get the fact that he didn't want any part of WMU. However, he had other offers to consider. Specifically Drake, Akron, Toledo, and EMU. I'm not sure if any of those evaporated before he made is decision...but still. He must have really liked Monty. Please don't take this as I am dogging NIU. I simply see them as not having the tradition in basketball that can lure recruits. Hats off to Monty for getting him to commit to NIU.

Anyhow...back to the game.

Nader is their guy on offense. He's long and rangy. Averages 13.9 points per game in only 24 minutes. I don't understand why he isn't averaging 30+ mpg. They struggle scoring and he is a legit scorer. I'm torn on whether or not Hutch is going to draw the assignment on defense. NIU starts one of the Gray brothers at 6'8", which will occupy Shayne. Their other G/F is frosh named Bowie at 6'6". I don't know if he is the PF type, or a wing. My gut tells me Darius will match up against him and Hutch will get Nader.

They start two frosh, two sophs and a junior. Very young. However, Monty goes 11 deep in his rotation. 10 of them average over 10 mpg and none more than 25 mpg. Either he has a roster full of guys who can't separate themselves, or he wants to run and press.

They check in at 3-12 on the year. 1-2 in MAC play. They pulled off the road upset at Miami last week...which I doubt anyone in the MAC Pick Em had predicted. Their other two win are at home against Judson College (NAIA team) and SIU Edwardsville. Here is the tricky part. They can either get blown out...or pull off a shocker in regards to the score. Witness a pair of 5 point losses at DePaul and UMASS.

They rank really bad in all offensive categories. I can't sugarcoat it any other way.

That being said, I remember a few years back when WMU couldn't shoot worth a darn in DeKalb. I really don't want to revisit those problems and have a loss hung on us.

Springs (I believe he is currently injured) and Bolin are their other offensive threats. They average 9 and 7 ppg respectively.

WMU can't afford to sleep on these guys right now. We have the better team, but winning on the road in the MAC is tough. Hopefully our young Broncos don't take this one for granted.

68-52 final score in favor of the Broncos. Game gets ugly with lots of fouls, turnovers and poor shooting from both sides. But a W is a W and we'll take it.

This is my concern too. A pretty good sized arena with nobody in it isn't exactly an inspiring environment to play in. Hopefully the team is able to create it's own energy and shoot the ball well. If we don't shoot the ball well, we leave open the possibility that NIU will get hot from three and pull off the upset- which has happened at least 2-3 times to better Bronco teams in recent memory.

Is Nader coming off an injury? I see he's only played in eight games and started seven. That could have something to do with his minutes. Also he seems to pick up fouls at a relatively high rate- 25 personals in eight games, seven starts. That's an average of over three a night. That could limit his minutes, especially if he picks up two fouls early.

As long as we shoot the ball reasonably well and don't give up offensive rebounds or open threes, I think this should be a comfortable double-digit win. Strange things have happened in DeKalb before though...

Nader was suspended for the first 7 games. Off the court incident.

I am very surprised the NIU coaching staff with its heavy State of Michigan heritage only has landed ONE Michigan HS player.

Montgomery, Borovich, Dawkins, Larson all have Michigan connections.
NIU DBO Jason Larson spent two years at WMU.

DeCamp just tweeted that Hutch is not practicing today. Apparently he is watching in his sweats.

And, Charles Harris is practicing. Maybe medical redshirt isn't in the cards.

Harris practiced yesterday too (full speed).

Interesting that Hutch isn't practicing. He looked 100% during yesterday's practice.

Stomach flu, per Scott DeCamp tweet.

Put Hutch in the game guarding Nader. Have him yak all over Nader and then send him to the locker room. Nader won't be a factor after that once he changes his uniform. 03-lmfao

Hutch is a beast on defense....which I sometimes forget.

Either Patton left NIU program in a shambles or Montgomery has totally gutted it.

34 points in a whole major college basketball game...wow.

And eight wins total in a year and a half - ouch.

Saginaw's Lou Dawkins (NIU assistant) wanted to be a college coach in the worst way.

Apparently he's achieved his goal.

Suspect his dream will be short lived.

Didn't former KC player Darius Norman sign with NIU last year. He's not on the roster.

Norman is in his Sophomore year at Grand Valley. Don't remember if he signed with NIU originally or not.

He's trying to function exactly like Izzo. Problem is, Izzo can get away with ugly offense because he has stud players and athletes. NIU can't afford that luxury.

That and they are still really young.
