Who You Need
You all need to bring this guy in for an interview. He has been an offensive coordinator at two 1-A (FBS) schools that were ranked #2 in the nation (N.C. State and South Florida). He also was the OC at Arizona. He has coached in the NFL. He went 2-3 as an interim coach for a team that had been 1-6 before he took over. One of his three losses was to a vastly more talented Kansas State team by a score of 49-41. As one of the links shows below, every single player (including current NFL players) on a former team of his wanted him to be named the head coach. In his last game as interim, the students chanted that they wanted him as their head coach. The alums, who sit on the other side of the stadium, were chanting his nickname. Just this week, many of his former players, including the Big East career yards leader whom he coached, started a petition to get him the job at USF. He was Phillip Rivers' college QB coach/OC. Read the two links below about a coach with the utmost level of integrity, a discipline system that commands respect from his players, and football coaching experience that rivals some of the biggest names in coaching today.

You can ask the president of the universities he has coached at; ask the
janitors of the football buildings; ask the local police forces; ask the players and fans. The guy just gets it. He knows how to treat people, how to earn their respect, and how to get the best out of them, which is difficult considering he has to relate to such a diverse group of student-athletes that make up a college football program. So many former players at multiple schools and fans cannot all be wrong in their beliefs.

He is a good OC, but has the intangibles to make an incredible head coach. What too many college presidents and ADs don't understand is that a great head coach does not necessarily make a great coordinator. Likewise, a great coordinator won't necessarily be a great head coach.

I played football and baseball against Western Michigan during my college days. I know that your school has the fan base which can help make a successful football program. This is the coach you need to help do the same:

He prefers an open, attacking, fast-pace offense with a mobile QB. On defense, he prefers having pressed corners in the faces of the receivers challenging teams to beat them deep.

At N.C. State, he obviously went with a pro-style to best utilize the talents of Phillip Rivers. At USF and Arizona, he went to a fast-paced spread offense for Matt Grothe (set the Big East career mark under him) and B.J. Daniels. He only coached Daniels for his first season, but it is worthwhile to look at Daniels' stats from his freshman season throughout the rest of his career. His lone year under Canales, as a freshman, was his best season.

At North Texas, where he is now, he has used a pro-style offense because of injuries/talent limitations he faced this year. The team finished 1st in the nation in sacks allowed per game and 7th in the nation in time of possession.

I know as fans, you want a huge name which is known for getting 500+ yards of offense a game. However, many times those offensive coordinators leave their defenses out to dry (check out the stats for defenses of teams that utilize a hurry-up offense).

Though his accolades are impressive as a coordinator and position coach, by far, his best assets are the intangibles that he has which are needed as a head coach.

RE: Who You Need
He has a very impressive resume and sounds like he could be a great HC.

My question would be though, what do we have to offer that would lure him up north? He hasn't played or coached in the Midwest. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but would he even be interested in the job?

Thanks, Mike. You sound great. Have you applied for the job through the proper channels yet?

I have no idea if he would be interested. I have read reports that he was a finalist at Arkansas State and Colorado State last year. I wouldn't underestimate the appeal of finally having his own program. I do know that over the years he has developed an extensive head coaching plan that he hopes to be able to implement some day.

And anyone who knows college coaches know they are too busy on the road recruiting during this period to peruse message boards. That is what agents and family members are for; neither of which I am. And he played football at Utah State. I doubt they played WMU, as I mentioned I did in two sports while being in the MAC. Further, it looks like I have 180 posts on this board. I doubt he would have any reason to post that much on your board over the years.

RE: Who You Need
Ok, couple questions:

1. How in the heck did you get his resume?

2. Has he formally applied to the position?

Looking at his past posts either Rife is a bigtime stalker or agressively enjoys women photos from his babe of the day posts !!! Not much else in the posting arsenal.

What we need (OK, probably not "need", but playing off the thread title) is that new stadium (Apogee) that UNT just built. Don't get me wrong ... I like Waldo just fine, but seeing a modern rendition of what a stadium of Waldo's size could look like is pretty impressive.

UNT's old field reminds me of Rynearson, which is to say their new one is a significant upgrade.
