RE: The 2 new additions are
You guys that are wondering about UTSA are missing the elephant in the room. The story is that the SBC has already talked to schools and know who is coming, the MUSA has talked to schools and they know who are coming, just not announced yet. So if the MUSA knows, but hasn't announced, and SBC knows and leaks the schools they want and UTSA isn't on the SBC list, what does that tell you.

UTSA is going to the MUSA merger. The CUSA has nothing to do with history, tradition or success, it has all to do with TV markets and making more money.

The SBC could make a better football conference, in turn making more TV money by going after programs that have had success at some point, that have histroy, and that have a name. Appy St has a bigger name and a better history then UTS or UTSA.

Does Tech have any of those? On a much smaller scale, but still. We all know that there are the folks who officially run the program...and then there are those who actually run the program.

Could Reneau and Benson have struck a secret deal? Sure, but the guys who "run" our program don't know about it. And if they don't know, I'd be shocked if the OP's source does either.

I can tell you my source could very well be wrong. I can also tell you Tech has indeed been in heavy talks with Benson and are 90% sure they will join. Those big money people you refer to will deny until the very end. If Tech lets the money people call the shots then you will go down with the rest of the WAC. The alliance doesn't even have Tech in its top 10.

The alliance is looking for a market to get a bigger TV deal. UNT, FIU, FAU, MTSU, Utah st and SJSU all have larger markets than Tech. It's time for Tech fans to get off there high horse and accept that you will be back in the conference you ran from.
Although it has never gone public, UL could very well be a choice in the alliance----Don't think that the projected 35K attendance for this year along with last years 30K att and the 40K plus at the NO Bowl didn't turn some heads--also the continued population growth of the area and school enrollment----- the 1 hour drive of 4 large metro areas to Lafayette give a interest in the Cajuns also for travel and TV viewership!!!

Did you just pimp your school to another conference while on the SBC message board? Pretty damn pathetic dude...
There is no doubt that we along with others in this conference would entertain an invitation to the CUSA----Of course as you know this doesn't apply to Monroe!!!!

I was open to your posts until your emotion got involved. I am just catching up on this entire thread...start to finish...and have seen NO instance where "Tech fans" are on a "high horse" about this situation.

I think those Tech fans who have posted here have been straight-up honest. We prefer to go to the Alliance than to go to the Sun Belt. There's nothing "high horsed" about that. We want our program to continue to move in a perceived forward direction. And while you guys have certainly improved in a decade, returning to the Sun Belt would still be perceived/viewed as a step backward.

At the end of the day, it is what it is. If the SBC is our future home, we'll make the best of it.
Well for starters you[b] can lose the "Belch" reference to our/your conference---and if you really hate Monroe you can call UL just UL or Louisiana!!! Come on let's see real hate!!! lol

Ummmm... I have never referred to the SBC as "belch." And I don't "hate" Monroe. You paint with an extremely wide brush.

BarkonDawgs, "maybe" the folks you say are not on high horses on this board may have some humility about rejoining the Belt. But if you ever, and I guess you do, read BB&B, there is not a stitch of humility there and no respect for the Belt what so ever. There really are some delusional fans there. Personally I could care less if you folks rejoin us or rot as an independent. And that sentiment is directly from what I've read on BB&B.

The Tech fans would be revolting (although some would argue that they already are). Tech and Texas State are the most likely immediate Sun Belt additions but UTSA and Georgia State are both strong candidates to replace Sun Belt schools that may depart for CUSA in the near future.

Benson is experienced in negotiating with television networks and I believe that he is trying to assemble the most lucrative package possible for the conference. UTSA and Georgia State are in huge markets and the Sun Belt needs those.

NMSU may be left outside looking in, and all those very good 1AA programs in tiny rural locals will remain just that.

The WAC is dead, at least as a football conference, and possibly as a conference.

Inviting Ga State to move up would be incredibly short-sighted. They'll be gone right after their transition is complete and the SBC will be in a worse position than before by having created another FBS team in it's footprint. LT, TSU and UTSA should be the top options and if more are needed than look at NMSU and the small-market, big name teams like App State. They'll be long-term members will increase the value of the conference through on the the field performance.
All that being said, I'm fine with 10 teams and would not wan to go above 12 under any foreseeable circumstances.

Okay Cajun...the whole "righteous indignation" schtick regarding OUR fan board is reallllllly getting old. If you (or anyone else) don't like, or are offended by the opinions expressed in our house, quit eaves dropping on the conversations.

On the other hand, if we bring those opinions and disrespectful comments to this board or YOURS, by all means, tear us up.

I've read some pretty crazy stuff on Ragin Pagin about my part of the state, it's regional population, my school and our culture. I certainly don't hold you, or ALL Cajun fans, responsible for all the "inbred redneck" comments i've read about northern Louisiana and its people that have been hurled at ULM and TECH in "discussions" on the RP fan board.

As I've said before, if it's said in YOUR house, it's YOUR perogative.

My opinion is anytime you make an addition and you "maintain the status quo", the conference is elevated because you have more quality programs. Toss aside your bias against LaT fans and you'll see they're a high-end Belt program.

As an aside, if LaT is indeed joining the Belt then we all need to step back and tone down the hate. We can't really condemn them if we exacerbate the problem constantly.

I'm pretty certain that there would have to be a massive change in circumstances to see those teams in the SBC in the near future.

Amen. Love em' or hate em' they will raise the profile a little bit more and their football is pretty good at the moment. If they can get basketball together they can be a very productive member.
The biggest hurdle to their addition is that their president angered every SBC president when he made his comments disparaging our academics - and of course they have the final vote.

Do we keep Denver to balance out UALR and move somebody to the East?

Or do we say to Denver sorry 'bout your luck, you made your bed lie in it?

It was my understanding that Denver was on its way out, anyway. They did not play enough sports in the Belt, and had several years to get compliant, and did not. In essence, they were getting "kicked" out.

The last 5 years of Sagarin Ratings shows that La Tech and Texas St replacing UNT and FIU would make the Sun Belt a stronger conference:

La Tech: 119, 100, 78, 89, 39 = 85
Texas St: 181, 154, 158, 203, 184 = 176

Combined: 130.5

FIU: 170, 111, 130, 90, 97 = 119
UNT: 173, 200, 137, 133, 119 = 152

Combined: 135.5

I think the "Predictor" ratings are more accurate than the rating the BCS system uses because the Predictor takes the scores of the games into account and the regular rating does not.

ND State went 14-1 and won the FCS national championship. Very solid team.

Some of the folks advocating olive branches and toning down perhaps didn't experienced having LaTech in the fold first hand.

If they join the SBC their fan base will need to prove that they have an interest in being a conference builder, leader, and advocate rather than a constant complainer thinking they are too good for "The Belch" and looking for the nearest exit door. I see that as unlikely. Until that is shown I have no interest in toning down anything.
