(08-15-2011 08:06 AM)FIUFan Wrote:  So what happened? The Texas Legislature...that's what happened. Even the all powerful SEC must yield the right of way to them.

Does the SEC really want Tx A&M? Sure, but what they really want is a foothold in Texas. The SEC owns the SE so where could they go to make a real impact in market share? TEXAS! Tx A&M hates being pushed around and over-shadowed by UT. So a move to the SEC would be a win-win for both institutions.

UT then saw its world crumbling around its head and ran to the Legislature within the Texas Board of Education to stop it. Which they did; but if they didn't step in, this deal would have been as good as done (hence media reports of the move being complete). Amazingly, all this angst was predicated by the request for the ESPN/UT contract concerning the LHN by that blogger recently.

So where are we now. Well, the cat's definitely out of the bag now. Everybody's shown their hands and UT has won this round but they now realize that they have guns aimed at them from the inside and the outside. If they don't change that contract and make it fairer, they're going to be standing on the corner with a bag of marbles....and nobody to play with.

As long as there is such disparity built into that contract, the Big XII (-II) will never be stable.

Agreed. That is the way I see it.

Ark State - 51 times

Congrats to Tulane - looks like the are the expansion candidate. Just think, Tulane back in the SEC.

Wow. You guys are hostile. The point was that USM has home and home dates against Miss State and Nebraska. That is impressive. So you don't like USM.

Okay, why do you like Missouri over USM?

That is the question

Nebraska is impressive, Miss State on the other hand...

Miss State has had a home and home with Middle Tennessee, they will also visit South Alabama, Troy, UAB and La Tech this decade.

Middle Tennessee has had or will have a 1-1 with Miss State, a 1-1 with Minnesota, a 2-1 with Maryland, a 2-1 with Georgia Tech, and a 2-2 with Vandy.

You might as well have said the SEC is going to invite Jacksonville State because they beat Ole Miss last year. Jacksonville State has just as much a chance of getting into the SEC as Southern Miss does.

Why do we like Missouri over USM? Is that a serious question?

It should be an open and shut case from the fact that Missouri plays in the Big XII and Southern Miss in CUSA. That really should answer your question, but it seems you can't wrap your mind around how beyond ridiculous the idea of the SEC taking any CUSA school is, so...

Columbia-105,000
Hattiesburg-45,000

Missouri- Only FBS program in a state of 6 million
USM- Third FBS program in a state of 3 million

Missouri- 32,000 students
USM- 16,000 students

Missouri- Football average attendance 61,540
USM- Football average attendance 29,400

Missouri- Endowment $975 million
USM- Enwodment $90 million

Missouri- Five NFL first round draft picks since 2009
USM- Four NFL first round draft picks EVER

Missouri- Basketball average attendance 11,112
USM- Basketball average attendance 3,517

Do I really need to continue?

The endowment issue does not matter, look at Duke, Vanderbilt and Northwestern.

USM basketball attendance would double against SEC Schools. Likewise with football.

First round draft choices don't mean a thing. FSU has had several that were bust in the NFL.

USM enrollment is only 3,000 less than ole Miss and MSU. Based upon your scenario. The SEC should replace Ole Miss or MSU with Missouri. The key is the travel requirements for the other sports,
Baseball, softball, gymnastics, women basketball, tennis, golf, soccer, volleyball, track and field.

Think of the additional cost to Ole Miss and MSU to travel to Missouri compared with travel to USM. Plus the revenue generated by additional SEC football games to the state.

On the other hand, Missouri fits in nicely for Big 10 west division if it decides to jump ship.

Illinois
Iowa
Minnesota
Missouri
Nebraska
Northwestern
Wisconsin

Indiana
Michigan
Michigan State
Ohio State
Penn State
Purdue

This actually makes more sense for Missouri. Now compare the travel cost with Missouri being in the SEC West for all sports. Does this help you or need I say more? Please continue. 04-bow

You are embarrassing yourself! USM will never be in the SEC! Do you really think Ole Miss and Miss St would vote them in. USM can't even win a CUSA championship much less compete in the SEC. Belt schools have even beat USM in bowls games.

I seriously doubt the SEC cares much about travel costs.

It is a factor. Ask Miami about it. The travel cost was the catalyst for moving to the ACC.

And the fact that the ACC is a much better conference.

You're so far off base on this thread that you're on another planet, seriously man, look around...nobody agrees with you. Even the most ardent Southern Miss fan would tell you that they have zero shot at an SEC invite.

And the debate is not if Missouri to the Big Ten makes more sense than Missouri to the SEC. Either one would be an upgrade from the Big XII and they'd jump at either invite, if the SEC invites Missouri they accept before the ink is dry on the invitation.

Also, another complication for southern miss is that the presidents and AD of the SEC have all agreed not to expand in territory already controlled by the SEC. I say that takes away clemson, FSU (wants no part of the schedule) and georgia TECh. I see TAMU, Missouri opens up brand new markets and recruiting territory, and at this moment the sec will let the rest of reallignment happen in the west, then take West Virginia and NC STATE in the east. This will effectively knock out the Big East.

In my own opinion, unless you just really care so much about academics than money in your athletic department if the SEC comes calling you will not turn them down.

Also taking on Southern miss would be like nation building for the U.S. Never turns out too well. Why would a conference that has won the last five MNC in football be willing to take on a team that is a good 10 to 15 years away from reaching even Vandy level of competition.

Now when the dominoes fall, WKU will be mentioned but no seriously considered for any conference other than the MAC. When the super conference come to be, the NON AQ will not only be looking at market size but teams competitiveness to make a big splash every once in a while. Football is the driving force and WKU is 3 to 5 years away from winning and competing regularly for a SUN BELT title. So in short WKU to Conference USA is a pipe dream and wouldnt even be worth moving to without memphis for basketball.

I just hope for a sunbelt title in 5 years, not unreasonable. MNC title will never happen. A BCS bowl will most likely never happen. Maybe a .00005% chance. An actual bowl game win maybe 6 or 7 years away.

I hope your right, but i see maybe one more win this year over last year. We are still very young as well as the coaching staff. Is this a knock on Willie, no not at all. I wont be disappointed this year unless we start another long loosing streak.

Now in basketball i expect us to be in the title game every 4 out of 5 or 6 years.

yeah you should and i hope we do, expectations and hoping are two different things. Winning the sunbelt should be the first step, after that you hope to win the bowl game, but winning the sunbelt would be a great first step to winning the bowl game.

I am not knocking the team but being realistic and WKU must take one step at a time. We were ready to move up into the sunbelt but most of our fans were unrealistic of the competition at this level.

a title.

And what title would that be?

I just hope for a sunbelt title in 5 years, not unreasonable. MNC title will never happen. A BCS bowl will most likely never happen. Maybe a .00005% chance. An actual bowl game win maybe 6 or 7 years away.

How is it that you think you'll be the best team in the Sun Belt within five years, but won't win a bowl game in that same year? If you win the Sun Belt, you should feel pretty good about your chances in a bowl game...

yeah you should and i hope we do, expectations and hoping are two different things.

I was thinking what are the odds . . . so I googled Sun Belt futures:

Sun Belt Conference 2011 – Odds to Win Conference
Florida International 3/1
Troy 3/1
Arkansas State 5/1
Louisiana – Monroe 11/2
Middle Tennessee 6/1
North Texas 9/1
Western Kentucky 11/1
Florida Atlantic 12/1
Louisiana – Lafayette 12/1

I think this is a warning shot from TAMU to UT over the UT Network. It is my understanding that UT gets the lions share of the monies generated by the conference TV package. This is what encouraged Nebraska and Colorado to jump ship. With UT's network money added, TAMU can not even attempt to keep up. However, jumping to the SEC puts TAMU in a Bigger Spotlight than playing 3rd or 4th fiddle in the Big 12. The question is Missouri. I think the SEC might go for Southern Missisippi instead.

SEC West

Alabama
Arkansas
Auburn
Louisiana State
Mississippi
Mississippi State
Southern Mississippi
Texas A&M

East

Clemson
Georgia
Florida
Florida State
Kentucky
South Carolina
Tennessee
Vanderbilt

It is a win win for both the SEC and TAMU, FSU or Clemson.

All three schools lose nothing in Basketball or Baseball by going to the SEC. Plus they pick up Gymnastics to help with Title IV considerations.

1. FSU does not lose the Florida or Miami game.

2. Clemson does not lose the South Carolina and picks up a yearly clash with Georgia.

3. TAMU will not lose the UT game picks up a two for one with the Arkansas and LSU games while losing Oklahoma. Plus they get Alabama, Auburn every year and Florida or Tennessee very four years.

If Texas A&M ask the be in the SEC, then I see FSU and Clemson doing the same.

So lets shuffle the deck. 02-13-banana

If FSU and Clemson go to the SEC then look for the ACC to pick up East Carolina and Richmond. Making it 4 private and 8 publc schools.

North

Boston College
Duke
Maryland
Richmond
Virginia
Virginia Tech

South

East Carolina
Georgia Tech
Miami
North Carolina
North Carolina State
Wake Forest

The Big East will work around Notre Dame for football and then take UCF and UMASS along with Army and Navy.

North

Connecticut
Pittsburgh
Rutgers
Syracuse
Massachussetts
Villanova

South

Army
Cincinnati
Central Florida
Louisville
Navy
West Virginia

The Big 12 will have to add BYU, Houston, SMU, Rice and Tulsa.

The Big 14

North

BYU
Iowa State
Kansas
Kansas State
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State
Tulsa

South

Baylor
Houston
Missouri
Rice
Southern Methodist
Texas
Texas Tech

Conf USA and the SBC would probably merge with the addition of Georgia State and UNCC.

SBC -16

East

Alabama Birmingham
Florida Atlantic
Florida International
Georgia State
Marshall
North Carolina Charlotte
South Alabama
Troy

West

Arkansas State
Louisiana Lafayette
Louisiana Monroe (replaced by Kennesaw State)
Memphis
Middle Tennessee
North Texas
Tulane
Western Kentucky

[i]Note: Contingent on ULM commitment to upgrade its facilities and boost enrollment and alumni support.

UTEP will probably go to the MWC along with San Jose State, New Mexico State and UTSA.

MWC

East

Air Force
Boise State
Colorado State
New Mexico
UTEP
UTSA
Wyoming

West

Fresno State
Hawaii
Nevada
Nevada Las Vegas
New Mexico State
San Diego State
San Jose State

The question is wether the MWC also invites LA Tech. Tech does not have much to offer.

Introducing Southern Athlectic Conference

East

Appalachian State
Georgia Southern
Jackson State
Florida A&M
Kennesaw State
Valdosta State

West

Central Arkansas
Jacksonville State
Lamar
Louisiana Tech
Southern University
Texas State

with room for North Florida and Florida Gulf Coast in the future. 02-13-banana

I love the face that we are in the SEC, but unfortunately, knowing Ole Miss & Miss State03-puke, they would NEVER let that happen. Ole Miss & MSU know we are a solid program and could be the best in the State of Mississippi, so that is the very reason why they will NEVER let us come into the SEC... LSU would probably throw a fit too. Letting little old USM into OUR conference? Absolutely not.
