Sad news
One of the greatest Broncos ever, Don Boven, has died at age 86.

GAZETTE will probably have info in days to follow.

One of the nicest, most decent, caring men I've ever known.

Besides being an all-time great Bronco athlete, he was also Manny Newsome's coach at Western.

He was my YMCA church league basketball coach - how many D-I guys in the last 30 years or so did that after getting out of the "big time"?!

RE: Sad news
Quote:After completing high school, Boven began attending Western Michigan University and playing basketball in 1946.[4] At Western Michigan, Boven set the career scoring record with 1099 points between 1946 and 1949, though this record has since been broken.[5] Boven also remains among the top ten for free throws made and free throws attempted.[5] As a junior, Boven was named a second team All-American and in 1949, the senior was named a first team All-American.[6] After completing college, Boven was selected by the Indianapolis Olympians in the 6th round of the 1949 BAA Draft.[7]

RE: Sad news
Was hoops coach when I was at WMU. Gentle and unassuming man who I thought was criticized a lot more than he needed to be. I believe he was followed by Sonny Means "Victory" (I still have the button somewhere).
