tiebreakers
I thought i read somewhere IF we beat Ball state on wednesday that we locked up the #2 seed.

On the mac website they say the first tie breaker is conference record, and the 2nd tie breaker is division record. So, IF we beat ball state we'd most likely have to win at central to get the bye since BSU gets NIU at home. Unless I'm missing something?

RE: tiebreakers
That's what I read to, and I thought it was correct at the time, but you are right... according to the MAC website tie breakers are

"TIE-BREAKER PROCEDURE
A. Head-to-head competition
B. Division Record (10 games)
C. Winning percentage* vs. ranked conference teams
(top to bottom, regardless of division, vs. common opponents regardless of the number of times played)
D. Coin flip"

So we would have to win at CMU to lock up the #2 seed.

I'm pretty clear we're going to win in Mt. Doom.

RE: tiebreakers
According to GC's article today, we wrap up the #2 seed at the MAC tourney with a win Wednesday. I don't claim to know all the tie-breakers but I trust that GC knows what he is talking about!

RE: tiebreakers
In this instance GC doesn't know what he is talking about. The first tiebreaker is head to head, the 2nd is division record. To clinch the division title and the No. 2 seed, WMU would have to beat both Ball State and Central Michigan unless BSU would stumble at home against Northern Illinois, which is highly unlikely.

RE: tiebreakers
I think it runs like this. If we beat Ball State, then the head to head competition is a wash. If we beat Ball State and happen to stumble at Mt P, then the league records are the same. The next one is the record against the team with the best record in the league and that could fall to the Miami game in which we won, and Ball State lost. Remember the best league records are in the MAC east and Ball State did not have a good run through the MAC east. WMU was 3 - 3 against MAC east competition.

That is how it was explained to this fan on Sunday at EMU by Robin Hook.

Always proud to be a Bronco.

This is from 5/25/2010. It's also the one linked on the MAC Tournament page under tiebreakers.

TIE-BREAKER PROCEDURE

A. Head-to-head competition

B. Winning percentage* vs. ranked conference teams (top to bottom, regardless of division, vs. common opponents regardless of the number of times played)

C. Coin flip

*Winning percentage is used instead of record because of situation where teams do not play each other the same number of times. Therefore, a team that is 1-0 (1.000) would win the tiebreaker over a team that is 1-1 (.500).

So.......maybe but probably not.

RE: tiebreakers
Here is GC's direct answer to my question concerning the tie-breaker:

"if WMU beats Ball State it locks up the No. 2 seed. The Broncos and Cardinals would have split their head-to-head matchups and so the next tiebreaker is a team's record against the league, from the top down. WMU won its game against Miami, which will finish ahead of Buffalo, which is Ball State's best win, so WMU wins that tiebreaker."

RE: tiebreakers
It is my opinion that the 2nd tiebreaker is Division record, which we lose to Ball State. So, I believe we will still have to win at Central to guarantee a Division championship and number 2 seed in our tournament.

I don't want to have to rely on anyone else knocking off Ball State to give us the bye. And I really don't want to play a home game in the tourney as well. I plan on attending the tournament in Cleveland and I would just as soon be sure we are going to be there (ala a bye!!!!!!) than have to go thru the other scenarios.

So LET'S WIN OUT! GO HARD BRONCOS.

The second tiebreaker is Division record, but if WMU beats Ball State, Ball State can finish no better than tied with the Broncos (both teams are 9-5 right now), so then it goes to the records against the rest of the league from the top down, with WMU's win at Miami giving it that tiebreaker with Ball State. Beat Ball State and the No. 2 seed is WMU's.

Sorry, might have botched this up. My bad on this. The tiebreaker rule has changed a bit in my time on the beat. It used to be record against the opposite division, I believe. I'll get this sorted out today. Again, didn't mean to mislead.

The division record referenced is the records each team has vs. the MAC West, from the 10 game comment in parentheses. Ball State wins that, since they're currently 8-0 while WMU is 6-2.

Based on the link I found earlier, it was last May. Odds are you (and the rest of us) weren't paying too much attention to basketball tiebreaker updates over Memorial Day weekend. 04-cheers

RE: tiebreakers
They changed the tiebreakers this year. After H2H, it goes to division record, so WMU cannot lock it up Wednesday.

RE: tiebreakers
OK, the divisional record tiebreaker, the No. 2 tiebreaker, is new as of May of 2010. Totally missed that change. So you guys are right, if WMU beats Ball State and loses at CMU and Ball State beats Northern, Ball State gets the No. 2 seed. That said, this year, at 10-6, there's a chance WMU could still grab a top 4 seed and bye to Cleveland.

They didn't announce it. It caught us all by surprise.

I personally hope we lose the tie breaker. Then we'd get one more home game, potentially one more win towards 20 wins, and I honestly think the Bye is not necessarily a good thing when you're on a roll.

Q
Assuming WMU defeats BSU Wednesday would it be any sweeter to go in and punctuate the regular season by crushing the Chimps?

I think not.

I hear Dip. But another day or two to rest (these last two weeks have been demanding) and to prep for the quarter and semi finals is a real plus.
