RE: What is going on with Iowa Football?
From "Hawk Talk Daily", the U of Iowa's sports email service:

Quote:Asked last Wednesday if, in so many words, there was a rush to judgment last week when 13 members of his football team were hospitalized, Kirk Ferentz suggested the following: "I would say know the facts and I would encourage people to know facts and know the people involved. (That) would be my suggestion." Later, our head coach football coach offered a little more... "It's the world we live in and I understand that. This is just wishful thinking, (but) anybody that's going to author a comment, written or verbal, (it would be good) to have all of the facts and know the parties involved. That's not realistic and I know that and you weather it and you stand by what it is you do and who you are."

"Stand by what it is you do and who you are." Pretty powerful words, don't you think? And, from where I sit, Kirk does this time and time and time again.

Some interesting comments from Hawkeye QB Ricky Stanzi from an interview by Tom Kakert on Rivals.com. (Bolding by Whinny.) The official report on the situation is due 90 days from the incident. We'll know the specifics then.

Quote:Q: What was your take on what went down with the 13 players that ended up in the hospital? A lot was made of it on a national level.

STANZI: I think it was blown way out of proportion. We have done that workout before and Coach Ferentz and Coach Doyle know what is best for the players. It was just one of those freak things. It looks awful, but it was blown way out of proportion. It is too bad because people start talking and they don’t really know what is going on or what was going down. They start making assumptions and the wrong information gets put out everywhere. It’s over now and I think people will look back on it and see that it was blown out of proportion at the time. We have done it (same workout) in the past and been fine. Guys just need to take better care of themselves and can’t expect to walk back into the workouts. They have to be ready to go and that is the player’s job, not the coaches. We have to be responsible as players when we go into an off-season training phase and not be sitting on our butts for three weeks and not getting any work in. You have to get ready for those workouts and maybe certain guys didn’t do that.

RE: What is going on with Iowa Football?
And before somebody jumps on my Hawkeyes for the latest Sports Illustrated "expose", and our supposed #2 ranking for most arrests of football athletes.......

Yes, we had 18 arrests in the last five years:
- 15 were alcohol related
- 2 were possession of marijuana
- 1 was disorderly conduct

All 18 are misdemeanors, and the result of the very strict police force in Iowa City. Our athletes are not given a bye when it comes to being drunk, stoned, or in fighting mode. Neither are any of the U of I students. They're all held accountable. If you want to party in Iowa City, you'd best do it in private.

The problem with the SI article is that it doesn't differentiate between misdemeanors and violent crimes. I suppose they decided to do that in order to create more sensational journalism. That rag is on its last legs, and needs readers desperately.

So if you decide to read the article, keep that in mind.
