Quote:An official offer was made early in the summer, and Barnette accepted after taking the summer to think about it and compare it to other offers he received from schools like Belmont, Jacksonville (N.C.) University and Wingate.

This news follows a BB offer to Mike Gabriel of Lincln Park HS who turned us down for ...........Quinnipiac!!! I do not know whether to laugh or cry. This tragedy can be confirmed on scout BB recruiting under "hot news". Yikes!!!

Barnette
The interest in Gabriel was quite some time ago. He was a late qualifier who ended up with just Quinnipiac in the end.

I talked with Barnette's father today. He had interest from some high majors and Ivy's too. Here is his profile...

Thanks for the update on the recruit from Tenn. I had very limited info, I guess he is a 6'4" SF, swingman or guard. I feel better and hope to continue our Tenn. connections.

I will start getting excited about basketball after we lose 4 or 5 games in football. That's when basketball starts to look good. Then again, with our team, I probably won't get excited about basketball until 2011 when General Patton bids sayonara.

Edit: Actually, I will be excited to see the new players on the team and whether or not the team will gel better than last year.

Maybe Quinnipiac can poll us on what we think of this? 03-lmfao Actually, they do have a nicer campus than us and they actually have a decent b-ball program.

Northern Illinois University Lands Second Class Of 2011 Recruit

DeAndre Barnette, a 6'4 class of 2011 wing from Liberty H.S. in Jackson, TN has verbally committed to Northern Illinois University. Barnette chose the Huskies over offers from Belmont and Wingate and was also recruited by a number of Ivy League schools.

Barnette and his father visited the Northern Illinois University campus this past weekend and were immediately won over by the campus environment, NIU's strong academics and the coaching staff. The style of play and philosophy employed by Huskies head coach Ricardo Patton also ended up being a huge factor. Simply put, Patton and his assistants have a plan to help further Barnette's development as a player, which they specifically laid out for Barnette and his father during the visit. There is also the opportunity for immediate playing time.

Barnette is described as being a late-bloomer, as he did not begin playing basketball until he entered junior high. He is long and athletic and is also a strong perimeter shooter. Above everything else, Barnette has an outstanding work ethic and is always striving to get better.

On the academic side, Barnette is a top-flight student who plans to major in engineering. Barnette and his father toured NIU's engineering facility while on their campus visit and the fact that the school has one of the top engineering programs in the country was instrumental in helping to finalize Barnette's decision.

Huge kudos go out to Huskies assistant coach Will Smith, who was most instrumental in Barnette's recruitment. Smith has extremely strong connections throughout the Memphis area which he has consistently used to NIU's advantage on the recruiting trail. In addition to Barnette, Smith was also the driving force behind NIU signing three other Tennessee-based prospects--6'5 forward Najul Ervin from Mitchell High School in Memphis, 6'6 forward Nate Rucker from Melrose High School in Memphis and 6'2 guard Antone Christian from Martin Luther King Magnet School in Nashville.

Barnette becomes NIU's second recruit from the class of 2011, joining 5'9 point guard Zach Miller from Glenbard East High School in Lombard, IL.
