MAC Release: WMU Game to be Played Tuesday, Toledo and Tennessee State Cancelled
Quote:MAC and NIU ANNOUNCE RESCHEDULED COMPETITION IN MEN'S AND WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Cleveland, OH -- Following the tragic events of February 14, 2008, at
Northern Illinois University, and the subsequent suspension of all
athletics competition for Northern Illinois University from that date
thru February 24, 2008, Mid-American Conference Commissioner Rick Chryst and NIU Associate Vice-President and Director of Athletics Dr. Jim Phillips announced today a revised competition schedule for both the men's and women's basketball programs at NIU.

In addition to the games originally scheduled from February 25 through the balance of the season, the home NIU men's and women's basketball contests that were not able to be played last week will be rescheduled as follows:

Tuesday, February 26: Western Michigan at Northern Illinois [men's
basketball]

Monday, March 3: Ohio University at Northern Illinois [women's
basketball]

"For this past week, the thoughts and prayers of so many across this
country, and certainly those of the institutions and students of the
schools of the Mid-American Conference, have been with the Northern
Illinois University community," stated MAC Commissioner Rick Chryst.
"We have all struggled to understand why a tragedy like that of February 14 occurs, and at the same time have been incredibly strengthened and impressed by the tremendous spirit demonstrated by the entire Huskie family -- students and parents, faculty and staff -- at this time of such sorrow and need.

"As this week of mourning draws to its close, and classes are set to
resume next Monday, we have been in regular conversation with Jim and his staff as relates to the resumption of athletics competition in the Mid-American Conference. Those conversations, as well as mine with the athletics directors, administrative staff, and coaches from our other member institutions, have all been marked by a common theme: what is best and most appropriate for the teams and student-athletes at Northern Illinois University?

"That is certainly a much easier question to ask than to answer, and I
have greatly appreciated all of the perspectives that have been shared over the last several days. While we recognize that returning back to our routines, and competition, is important, that return is certainly within constraints: academic, logistical, and otherwise. We have endeavored to strike a balance and, in that regard, I believe strongly that these revised schedules come as close as we can to meeting those goals."

Games cancelled because of the tragedy include NIU women's basketball contests at Central Michigan and Toledo, as well as the NIU men's basketball game at Toledo. As a result, final conference standings in the two sports will be determined by overall conference winning percentage.
