The whole season changed...
on that punt return against Akron. You can say anything else you want, however that play broke the HEART of this team. I was there the week before at Toledo-we played great the last 3 quarters. Who says one play can't determine a season. There's your proof. We just have not been the same team.

RE: The whole season changed...
It's remarkable what momentum, swagger, confidence can do for a team, or the lack of it can hurt a team. I agree that the UA game was a backbreaker, coming on the earlier blow-out lossess to W.VA, IU and Mizzo.

Maybe there was a lot of misplaced confidence coming into the season. I remember seeing a quote from Delmas prior to the start of the season where he was claiming that WMU had the best secondary in the country. So much for that nonesense.

I understand that we need the football team to be the ATM for the rest of our athletic program, but it's a falking shame that we have to be overmatched on the road against the likes of who we have played this year. All that those crushing defeats do are to hurt confidence, get players hurt and ensure that we are very unlikley to have a premier sesason ever again. But.......we will be able to sponsor a soccer team.

Forget the cmu game right now I think we will lose to Temple. What happend to the Broncos, did the loss of all the assistant coaches have this big an impact ? Each week WMU has become worse and this week was an all time low.WMU will very well end the season with only 3 wins. This meltdown is baffeling .

Actually the meltdown is on the offensive side of the ball, not the defensive side. The defense has got progressively better.

This is just a stab in the dark, but I think Cubit left his element. He is a pass first offensive coach, and every quarterback he's recruited has fit that matrix. Pass first QB's tend to get better as the game progresses and they get lots of reps.

When Western started putting up some big numbers on the ground, they went away from that, and became a run first offense. They used the run to set up the pass at that point. That offense requires you hang on to the ball, and it requires you can make good check offs when the defense starts crowding the line. We have done neither. Nor have we thrown the ball around enough to get Hiller into a groove.

Miller stuck with what he knew, and his defense improved. Cubit went away from what he knew and his offense has sputtered.

CD, its easy to agree with you that the offense lost us this game and now appears to be in the toilet. On the other side of the ball, the defensive line has gotten better but the secondary has obviously, and glaringly, not. They did not put in a good performance today, and not against Akron or Ball State, either. Oh, we can talk about injuries and how often all four have played together, we can talk about the number of passes defended, the lack of sacks and overall pass rush, today's time of possesion: but, honestly, where does the buck stop with this unit?

Here's hickory swinging with the God awful truth: these DB's came in over-rated, they underperformed, they've tackled poorly in the open field and they've allowed an amazing amount of first downs and extra yardage. The play today that will burn on my brain was that ridiculous EMU reverse for a touchdown where CJ Wilson tried to strip the ball from the 25 yard line into the endzone. Biggers shows-up at the 10 and you have the two of them swatting away, escorting the Eastern receiver into the endzone. It never occured to either of them that they should make the tackle first! That play was so bad and so critical to the game, my jaw dropped and I couldn't believe what I just saw.

Delmas, my man, you do not wrap when you tackle -- you hit like a ton of bricks (often hurting yourself more) but too many opponents are bouncing-off you for extra yards. Who taught you how to tackle? Even Ronnie Lott wrapped-up. LF, my goodness is the word out on you with the pump-fakes and out and ups. Like every position group, no-one should have a starting job going into spring!!! We are one of the worst-ranked pass defenses in the country. And, so far, we've earned it.

I disagree.

In the age of kick offs from the 30, almost any team can put up 30 points. Field position now starts at the 30 or 40 because kick returns start at the 15 or 20.

Take out the fluke punt return vs. Akron and Western has held every MAC team at 30 or below. That's good enough to win, and win every MAC game they played.

This teams problem has been red-zone offense. They can't execute or hang on to the ball in the redzone. You can't win games when you throw away 14pts a game because of bad execution in the redzone.

The only "Why" I can come up with is confidence, and that confidence has to start with the QB.

I think that the RT missed about two or three blocking assignments that could have sprung a runner for a td. He needs to be changed out as well.

That's an astute observation, at least for the offense. The Defense has gotten better as the season has gone one.

Our D played well enough to win today, the poor tackling on that one TD aside. EMU has had an average of 31 points scored AGAINST them this year. Our offense got.......0 points. 04-jawdrop

To echo from another thread: I was at the 03 game in ypsi when an offense lead by chad munson coasted through the first half trailing 3-0 at the break before scoring 31 unanswered points.

i miss those days. what is jeff woodruff up to?
