RE: Our Recruiting Philosophy
NIUSAE Wrote:The Illini being good may benefit us. They have recruited and are recruiting a lot of out of state kids which may leave more kids in state for us to recruit. Locksley, their chief recruiter besides Zook, is from the DC area and many of their better recruits come from that part of the country.

The vaunted, "having ties to Illinois high school coaches" only seems to matter to MAC teams. I think that aspect of who the coach is is way overblown, because most high school coaches want their kids to go to the "highest" rated school (read BCS schools) over a MAC school. Not necessarily what is best from a playing and opportunity standpoint.

Any high school coach worth his title (and all of the ones I've been associated with) want their players to go to a place where they will play. Often, they're the only ones not star-struck by the process and have a better idea of what to expect in terms of opportunity. Thus, I've seen several coaches attempt to talk kids into more seriously considering a lower echelon school, whether that means the MAC vs BCS, or more likely a Division II or III school rather than Division 1 or 1AA.
