Illini
This may sound selfish...but I NEVER root for the Illini. A bad ILLINI program indirectly benefits NIU. I realize, that for the most part we don't go after the same recruits BUT there are always a few borderline players that may chose NIU over the Illini especially when we're up and they're down. Example (AJ harris, Adamski, etc,).

Hey, every little bit helps...you never know if that one player may turn into a Turner, Wolfe, Free, etc. Just a thought...

Go Huskies

The difference between the Zooker and Turner is Zook goes national for recruits. So i'm not sure he is going to be picking off the marginal 3 star guys we hope for. In fact a BIG illini year may open those guys up for us to grab one or 2.

RE: Illini
The Illini were horrible for most of this decade. Yeah, we had some success but when it comes down to it we had ONE bowl victory.

Meanwhile, U of I basketball has been a powerhouse for years and look who is right along beside them - SIU.

I'm having a hard time seeing your argument. U of I has more of an indirect negative effect on NIU academics in terms of funding, etc than it does in athletics.

Like NEWguy said.. this opens up the opportunity for us to grab the solid 2 star recruits.

As much as I can't stand the Illini and their alum, good for them. They sucked and decided to do something about it. They went out and got a good coach and landed top notch recruits. I respect an organization that isn't afraid to make some moves.

Wow, this thread hasn't been moved yet?? I'm shocked.

Illini are 5-1 and ranked 18. We are 1-5.

Well that oughta do it.

Why do you always have to put NIU down when defending the Illini?

I completely agree. Abortion is a terrible thing and should be made illegal immediately.

Putting them down? Let me draw it out for you.

Point I'm making: The success of Illinois means nothing to NIU.

Reasons: When Illinois sucked, NIU didn't do much. Now that Illinois is good again, that doesn't mean we will suck.

Conclusion: Illinois athletics has a very very minimal affect on NIU athletics. However, the U of I does have a negative impact on our academics in terms of state funding, etc.
