I saw the highlight of this on Baseball Tonight, and it was supposed to be was a joke, like when players throw water on the Phillie Phanatic.

Quote:MILWAUKEE -- Pittsburgh first baseman Randall Simon was booked for misdemeanor battery for hitting one of the Milwaukee Brewers' popular racing sausages with a bat during Wednesday night's game.

Simon was released, said a spokeswoman for the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department, who asked not to be identified. Simon will meet with the district attorney's office Thursday, and it will be up to prosecutors to determine whether formal charges are filed.

In an event that's a fan favorite at Miller Park, four people in sausage costumes race around the bases between the sixth and seventh innings at Brewers games.

Film of Wednesday night's race showed that when the group went past the Pirates' third base dugout, Simon took a twohanded chop at the Italian sausage character -- portrayed by a 20-year-old South Milwaukee woman -- hitting her from behind and causing her to tumble to the ground.

As she fell, a nearby sausage -- the hot dog -- went down as well.

Two-handed chop??? It was a slow tap!

I saw that on ESPN last night. Players usually toss water at them...and I thought this was set up for Simon to "tap the sausage" when the group ran by the visitor's dugout.

Arrested? Unreal!!!!!

Ironic that it happened in Bud Seligville.

Glad he doesn't play for the Tigers anymore. An arrest that stupid would just add to the agony of the Tigers' losing record!

He has been suspended for 3 games. I read on ESPN.com that the girl seemed to be fine with everything, she wasnt hurt, and I think she understands that it was meant as a joke. She said all she wanted was the bat that he hit her with. It seems that the media and the baseball big wigs made this a bigger issue than it should have been, I mean Simon obviously meant it as a joke and the girl seems to feel that it wasnt a big deal. I dont think he should be suspended at all.
