DENVER (AP) -- San Jose Sharks forward Marco Sturm broke his left leg in the first period against the Colorado Avalanche on Friday night and will miss the remainder of the season.

Sturm was chasing the puck behind the Colorado net when Avalanche defenseman Adam Foote rode him into the boards feet first at 11:26 of the first. Sturm lay motionless for several minutes before being taken off the ice on a stretcher.

Sturm is San Jose's second-leading scorer with 21 goals and 20 assists. The Sharks opened the night with a six-point lead over Dallas for first place in the Pacific Division.
