Knollwood Tavern
If we ever do get a lounge sub-set, it should definately be named Knollwood Tavern, Liam. Just because something doesn't exist any more, does not mean it should be forgotten and more importantly, some things should always have some meaning. Who's to say that an existing bar won't be closed next year. Why miss an opportunity to bring a true WMU institution back to some sort of life. Honor, tradation and spirit dictate it. Those things mean little to today's generation, I know, but try them, you might like them.
Let me put it another way. Just because Pete Wysocki died, it doesn't mean he wasn't one of the greatest Broncos of all time. If a Bronco doesn't know of Pete Wysocki, it would be considered an honor for one who does to tell the other.

^ Agreed. Knollwood is part of the WMU tradition and history. It would be a great name for a lounge forum and a great way to include some campus history in the message boards.

My favorites of the ones mentioned are: Knollwood Tavern, or Waldo's.

Lee mentioned something I was planning. I was putting into place a domain name and a message board system based similarly on the Ay-Ziggy-Zoomba format. Frankly though, I don't have the time, and probably won't for at least 2 months.

Basically I was planning a message board site with a name that paid homage to our tradition, our current success and future dominance.

This name for the site was to be "We Will Reign"

I don't see myself probably setting up the private site as it stands, and it wouldn't surprise me if someone ran off and reserved that domain name, but since I'm not going that route, I would welcome giving that name to this message board. Long live our fight song, and the future of Bronco sports.

The Knollwood Tavern wasn't at WMU when I was, I'm sorry I missed it and I'm sure it was great but it isn't coming back. People aren't going to know what it is. Every new student who matriculates through WMU isn't going to have ever experienced it. That is my point. Why not honor a tradition that binds people together over the generations like Waldo's, instead of one that divides people between before and after.

I agree with Liam on this one.

I'm pretty sure the older brethren would feel the same way the newer ones do if we named the lounge Firehouse or after one of the newer bars they never experienced while a student.

Find something that binds all WMU students and alum together.

A compromise could be to name the lounge forum "Waldo's" and name the Hall of Fame forum "Knollwood Tavern."

I don't see us getting more forums on here anyway, so it's probably all a moot point.

Agree with above posts
I have to agree with the posts above - let's keep it classy. Most of the posters on this forum are alum, not students. That doesn't validate the Knollwood Tavern name though - even though we're aware it was a sweet place.

That's like some of us requesting the board to be named Firehouse (yuck), Wayside (CMU has one too, yuck) or Monaco Bay.

Here are my favorites:

Bronco Society
The Stampede
The 'Zoo Crew
Waldo's

Just wanted to echo my earlier post that we keep WMU/Western Michigan/Western in the site name for recognition purposes. Because there will be fans/prospective students/media/nosy folk looking for WMU sites with message boards. The site name should be be self-explanatory. The purpose is to get people directed here. The forum divisions, if we get them, can be anything we want.

I kind of liked Bronco Corral but upon reading Whinny's description......I concur with the assessment.

Q. - Where do Broncos gather?

The watering hole?

The Back 40?

I don't know. I love the Knollwood idea. Too much tradition to not include that somewhere, if we can eventually get multiple forums.

Stampede is a good one, as it conjures up a group that will flat out run over you if you get in it's way. Can I change my vote?

In 2005, I attended the CMU game and afterwards wondered portions of the campus that held special memories. When I got to the western end of campus, on W Michigan Ave near the student sevices bldg. I looked at the traffic circle there and tried to imagine what I had seen 30 years before. The changes were terrific and terrible at the same time. The Knollwood Tavern was located on the northern edge of what is now a traffic circle. I took pictures of the open field area. If I had the pull, I would try to get the university to put a boulder with an inscibed plate to commerate the memory.

I wish I had a picture of the Knollwood tavern to share. The picture could be a way to share with the younger set what was a part of WMU's campus.

I like Brown & Gold Nation for the WMU portion of this site.

Don't forget about the old Discount Den location right there as well. I miss that as well, the new location just isn't the same.

Didn't I hear somewhere that back when the Tavern and the Den were open in that location where the traffic circle is now that they were the only "on campus" bar and liquor store in the USA?? (since WMU owned the property the two sat on)

That sound familiar to anyone else?

I've heard that before also, but I think I read it on one of our WMU boards.... so who knows if it is true. I wasn't around for the knollwood tavern, but I definately miss the old den. The new one just isn't the same. Either way, I"d have NO problem calling the lounge the knollwood tavern. Even those who dont' know about the bar know about the apartments and the street, so they might be able to make a connection there.

Maybe just call it "Knollwood" then. All WMU students/alum should know the neighborhood. They are living in a hole if they don't. That name can encompass both the bar and neighborhood then and should connect all the generations of WMU students/alum.

Or perhaps go a completely different direction and call it "Lafayette St". LOL. EVERYONE should know that and it's significance!! hahahahahaha

WMU was one of 3 public campuses to have a bar on their property and one of 4 to have an on campus liquor store, but the only public campus to have BOTH.
