Shafer humble, credits WMU kids
I know that since Scott Shafer has left us, many would prefer not to talk about him at all. I ran across this article today in a NE Ohio newspaper.
Quote:"It was one of those deals where I'm extremely appreciative of the kids at Western Michigan that played for me," Shafer said. "They gave me the opportunity to get this job. Coach Harbaugh was checking the NCAA stats and was looking for a coordinator who had a really good season and would be anxious to jump up to the Pac-10 level.
"Those kids at Western Michigan did a great job of making me look like a better coach than I am."

Ready for the Call Up

Nice article on his coaching roots, his father the coach and where his career has taken him.

I wish him the best and will keep an eye on Stanford's defense the next few years.

This is a guy who was not upfront of his pursuit of another job then tried to take 2 assts and did take one asst. He knows Cubit will be looked at next year and hes trying to keep his head in on this job should it open.

I'm very well aware of that, which is why I put the qualifier in there at the beginning.

Still, Shafer did well at WMU and is correct in that the play of his kids got him noticed. I'm not going to hold his actions against him, as most coaches would like to move up and make more $$ to take care of their families.

You might be right that he is saying good things to keep his name out there for a future HC option at WMU. Or, maybe, he is being honest and humble, knowing that the play of the kids got him noticed.

While I was certainly disappointed that he left and took a few assistants with him, I've moved past that and look forward to the fall.

We each have our perspectives. If you want to see him and his actions as sleazy that is up to you. Meanwhile, the program moves on.

Moving on is the name of the game for college football assistant coaches. If they don't play that way, they won't last long. Fans just have to learn to not take it personally when a guy moves on.

I agree. I am mostly concerned about what they did while they were at WMU than I am with how they left. I'd rather get stiffed by a good coach on his way out than have the loyalty of 100 bad coaches with no options.

I agree that you move around just be honest about it.

That being said hes right he had some serious talent on the D end last year.

In the end it worked out well for us as we upgraded at the DC position. Billy Miller is bigtime.

As far as "being honest about it" goes, how do you announce that you might be looking at other positions without burning bridges in your current job? Who knows if any opportunities will present themselves? Or if the other opportunities will work out? At what point do you announce it, if not when you agree to take another position?

I'm not understanding why Shafer was considered devious, when other assistant coaches were not. As far as his raiding the Bronco pantry to get help at Stanford, isn't this within the boundaries of ethical behavior for coaches?

Don't get me wrong. I was VERY disappointed to see Shafer leave. And surprised by the other assistants following him. But I don't see any actions of his that hit below the belt
