NEW ORLEANS— The Sun Belt Conference has announced that Gatorade has joined with the league as a corporate partner.

The sponsorship, which is a one-year deal, will provide Gatorade with on-site marketing and exposure on the Sun Belt Conference-ESPN Regional Television package. In addition, the sponsorship agreement grants Gatorade the promotional use of the Sun Belt marks, media, grass roots marketing initiatives, internet opportunities and merchandising.

"We are extremely pleased to have Gatorade join our corporate program," said Sun Belt Conference commissioner Wright Waters. "It is so important that the corporate community continues to recognize what we are trying to achieve through college athletics in the Sun Belt Conference. College athletics has the ability to combine the educational values of its institutions with the classroom of athletics. This is another great step for the league."

Associate Commissioner Jim Carabin brokered the deal with Gatorade. Since Carabin took over the league’s corporate sponsorship program two years ago, sponsorship dollars have increased each season by 50 percent. Sales are projected to increase by another 55 percent during the 2004-05 season.

"What Jim has been able to do over the past two years with our sponsorship program is amazing," said Waters. "We are in great shape as a league because of his efforts."

Founded in 1976, the Sun Belt Conference is currently comprised of 11 full-time member institutions and five affiliate members competing in 19 NCAA Division I sports, including I-A football.

Full-time league membership includes the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Arkansas State University, the University of Denver, Florida International University, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Middle Tennessee State University, New Mexico State University, the University of New Orleans, the University of North Texas, the University of South Alabama, and Western Kentucky University.

The University of Idaho, the University of Louisiana at Monroe, Troy University, and Utah State University are affiliate members in I-A football. ULM and Florida Atlantic University also compete in the Sun Belt Conference in men’s and women’s swimming & diving. Troy will join the Sun Belt at a full member in 2005-06 with ULM and FAU to follow in 2006-07.

Sounds good, but what about schools that use a different product? I think Troy uses Power-Ade. Will all the schools have to switch over? Not like its a big difference....

I've dealt with Coke and Pepsi contracts in the past. The answer is very likely YES,when the current contract PowerAde(Coke) expires.
