Huskies name new defensive coordinator
Former linebacker coach moves up to replace Shafer

NIU named a new defensive coordinator late last week with the promotion of Huskies linebacker coach Denny Doornbos.

The defensive coordinator position opened when former coordinator Scott Shafer accepted a job as a secondary coach for the University of Illinois on Dec. 31.

Doornbos gained experience as defensive coordinator at Texas-El Paso from 1983 to 1985 and at Army from 1990 to 1999.

This was pretty much a given was it not? Good idea for Novak to fill in with a few experienced guys last year. After losing so many young assistants, I am glad to see somebidy with a lot of years take the position over.

Hickenbottom's quote was very interesting. Expecting the coach to crack down on freelancing and undiscplined play? Just the threat of bench time might do wonders for Hickenbottom.

Doornbus is an ex-Army coach for 9 years. Discipline, work ethic, attention to detail are some of traits they teach at Army. Jumping offsides and mental mistakes like blowing coverage assignments will hopefully be reduced.

Only logical choice on the staff. Probably was promised by Joe that if Schaeffer left, he would be the next D-Coordinator before he was hired. The other D-coaches will get their chance in coming years to be promoted internally or move on to another staff for a better job/paycheck.

Joe has a great track record for having assistants advancing their careers after coaching at NIU. Should help him recruit a coach even with the handicap of low salaries.
