....from the Alumni E-mail News....

Almost 400 alumni and friends of NIU enjoyed a spectacular evening at the Shedd Aquarium on January 23.

It marked the third year the Alumni Association hosted its annual dinner and private viewing at one of Chicago's landmark institutions.

This evening was especially notable for the announcement of two major gifts to the Alumni and Visitors Center.

NIU President John G. Peters proudly announced major gifts of $250,000 from Dean, '80, and Linda DeBiase (top photo) and $105,000 from Sally Stevens (middle photo, center), former employee and long-time friend of NIU.

The Alumni and Visitor's Center project was announced at Homecoming last year. The 37,000 square-foot building, which will be made possible entirely by private gifts from generous alumni and friends, will be a dynamic gathering place for Northern's graduates and extended family.

Guest speakers for the evening were Bryan Schuetze, '87, M.A. '89, director of design and planning at the Shedd, and James Robinett (bottom photo, right) '74, M.S. '77, vice president of legislative affairs. Schuetze headed the creative team responsible for the design and construction of the Wild Reef exhibit that opened in the spring of 2003. A private viewing of this exhibit was a focal point of the evening.
