Bell to be relocated for bus turnaround renovations
Alpha Phi Omega opposes destruction of wishing well

Article by:
Aacia Hussain - Staff Reporter

The victory bell may never ring again in front of DuSable Hall.

The bell has stood its ground on Malis Island, the patch of land in front of DuSable Hall, for more than 40 years. It originally was owned by coed service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega.

APO donated the bell to NIU in 1960, but it has served as a part of the fraternity

I was pleased to read this in Star -it's been a long time coming. I do wonder why it's not possible to recreate the wooden support structure to include the beams as "NI". The bell may likely sit on some storage rack before any progress is made re: relocation.

A destination should be north of north endzone beyond where a new facility would be constructed.

What does Residence Hall Assoc have to do with its relocaction?

Why doesn't the frat which donated it take some initiative on this?
just asking.

The only way the frat would get involved is if they included moving the Bell as a part of Homecoming Week "spirit" competition!

And don't forget the most important question.

As part of the "Frat" you are discussing, we were not notified until last week that they had planned on doing moving the structure. We are a co-ed Service Fraternity so we are not like the other Fraternities on campus. We have been trying to find a new location on campus for the wishing well structure, why they can't move the entire structure remains unknown. If you have any suggestions on where to move it that would help us that would be great because it is part of the Universty's and Alpha Phi Omega's history. We had made suggestions earlier in the year to move it to the football field or to the Convocation center, though we figured the entire thing would be moved not just the bell.

I think it would look great on the berm in the south end zone of Brigham Field.

Somewhere between Huskie Stadium, the baseball field, and softball field might work too.

If we ever go through with this endzone football facility, that bell would look good somewhere in the area between the building and the endzone. It could be something the team all touches on their way out of the lockerroom.

You could even develop a post-victory ritual of the team ringing the bell, gathering around it and singing the fight song. Have a stadium-wide, a capella rendition of the fight song.

Heck, buy a couple of those collapsable goal posts and invite the students down for that (idea conditioned on collapsable goal posts, which would, of course be guarded after the game)

I really like the idea of moving it to the south endzone berm....make it a real focal point.....we need to maintain traditions such as this one...

One of our Membership Vice Presidents has a meeting with the Finance Committee and the Powers that be during Spring Break and I have forwarded the ideas that you guys have posted on here to him and he thinks, as do I, that these are excellent ideas. I will try to keep you all posted as to what is happening to the Bell.
