That's it, I take back everything I said!

P.S. Do they play with pads, or is it "flesh-to-flesh" - so to speak?
They play with pads. They are the Toledo Spitfire.

http://www.toledospitfire.com/
This is great! Thanks for the link. I never knew there was a women's football league. Have you seen them play? How are they and women's football in general? Do they get any publicity in the Toledo press?
I have not seen them play and they don't get much press in the Blade. But then again, about the only thing that gets a lot of press in the Blade is Ohio State, Michigan, and Notre Dame. Even professional sports seem to get slighted, IMO. Understand why everyone hates the Blade?
Understood. As I posted on your board a couple weeks ago, the Chicago press is the same. It's professional sports, Big 11 (especially Ohio State), and Notre Dame here. We get minimal coverage in the Chicago papers, although it was better last year. The rest of the MAC gets absolutely zero coverage. However, Illinois' and Northwestern's coverage still eclipsed ours. When we beat Bowling Green in 2002, we got MUCH more coverage in the Blade than in the Chicago papers. I have a copy of the Blade's coverage of that game. Our win made the sports headlines with a color photo, while the Rockets' win that day got minimal coverage. What the heck is the Blade's problem? They seem to have some sort of prejudice against the MAC, yet they are located in the hotbed of MAC sports. There are some Chicago media that have a definite prejudice against NIU.

This is wild! I wish we had a team in the Chicago area. I'd definitely go to see them over the Bears. How about it, guys? Let's pool our money and start up a Chicago (or suburban) franchise, the Chicago Windies. NIU85Alum can put in the most, since he's the msot successful and has the most money.

Well even though the Blade won't admit it, there was a run-in behind closed doors with UT officials a few years ago. They told the UT officials that they were going to destroy the University and then build it back up the way they wanted it.

UT officials have admitted that this took place. Blade officials deny it.

Thanks turf,

You presented your evidence in a convincing courteous fashion. I stand corrected.
Fact still remains that a "co-championship" is just that. You guys did NOT earn the # 1 spot during that time frame and we and the rockets did!!

He posts here because there is no activity on the BG board. I just love the way BG fans support the Falcons. Say what you want about NIU but at least Coach Novak never had to send a letter out to the students to come to a game and support the Huskies. 03-razz

This is really sick! Knowing the press, I completely believe it. It wouldn't surprise me if the same thing is going on in Chicago with NIU. There are some NIU grads in the media whose NIU degrees got them prominent, high-paying jobs, yet they are always dissing or ignoring the Huskies. We'd never see this from a Big 11 or Notre Dame grad!

Are there other newspapers in Toledo (or suburbs) that give you the coverage you deserve? In this area, we have the Rockford Star and Daily Herald (north and west suburban) that give us excellent coverage.

From time to time there are new newspapers in the Toledo area, but the Blade has too much clout and makes sure they fail. They usually don't last more than a year or two.

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't the Blade-UT thing start when the publisher (Pittsburgh resident John Robinson Block) wanted a seat on the Board of Trustees or some position in the Law Department and he did not get it?

As far as letters to Students...is every Northern football game sold out? Does every student on campus go to every football game? Of course the answer is no, so what is wrong with the coach requesting students to come to a game? Obviously he was not asking the regular game attendee to come.

As to why there is not much posting in the BG forum...big deal...this is a message board...not a mandatory fan activity. Besides we have our own message board which has in excess of 400 members I believe of which 100 or so are regular contributors.

Yeah, I think that's it. JR Block is one of the family of Block's that own the Blade, Pittsburgh Post Gazzette, Buckeye CableVision, TV5, BCSN, Access Toledo, Sign Pro, CPS, and a couple of radio stations in Kentucky and Utah.

They are very influential in the city of Toledo.

Of course we don't sell out every game. This is the MAC, after all. The game to which I was referring was the game against NIU on ESPN with Game Day on campus. The place should have been packed with standing room only without the coach begging for support. I guarantee you that this game would have been a sellout well in advance of the game had it been in DeKalb. I watched the game on TV. Even with the coach's plea, there were plenty of empty seats. Was it a sellout when you played Toledo? If it was,or even close, thank the Rocket fans.

NIU loses lots of students on weekends, considering its close proximity to Chicago where most students live. Yet our student attendance was outstanding for almost every game last year.

Sounds like a bit of Chicago politics. Does the Blade give BG decent coverage, or is this an anti-MAC thing? How about Toledo's coverage on radio/TV? Is it any better?

You are missing some key facts dogbreath.

The NIU game was a 99% sold out game before GameDay even announced they were coming which was a week before the game. The game would have sold out regardless.

The UT game was sold out as well...and yes Toledo fans do come this game...DUH!!!

Students get into BG football games free as they pay an activities fee with their tuition that covers all campus sporting events. The students don't have to pick up their tickets early, they pick them up at the gate so we have to leave an alotment of seats for the expected turn out.

Again...the letter was to try and get students and faculty who don't usually go to the game to go. I applaud any coach for doing this...and BTW, you might want to do a little checking, because I believe this letter was for the MACC game against Miami for which we drew 25,000 with only three business days to sell tickets...you remember that game...don't you...the one YOU WERE NOT IN!!

Besides...WHO CARES WHAT YOU THINK PEA BRAIN!!!!!!!!!

Well they do seem to cover BG athletics a little bit better than UT athletics, but neither is covered very much at all.

The current beat writer for UT athletics is reporting on the Detroit Tigers, therefore there has been 1 article about UT spring practices thus far and the Spring game is this Saturday already.

Only 25,000 for the most important game of the year? Lucky that Oxford is not too far away and that Miami fans travel well!

And who cares what you think? Who invited you here? Isn't there anyone on your board worth talking to? Did you get tired of talking crap on Toledo's board? When "nice" people like you and B.O. come on this board talking trash, be ready to take get it back. We didn't start this.

I am determined to find a decent person in Bowling Green. My proctologist came from Bowling Green. He said he had to get out because the biggest a*holes he had ever seen were from BG.

I really feel for you guys. Neither you nor Bowling Green deserves this. I know how frustrating it is for us. Our problem here is similar but a little different. We have the major media market nearby, but we can't crack into it because of prejudice against the "mid-majors". Thank God for Fox Sports Net and now ESPN. Let's hope that this is the year the MAC gets the publicity it deserves.

Blue was pretty cool. I think he was the nicest guy from BG I ever met.

But, as stated before, I hope BG Elvis shows his face at Huskie Stadium in September.

But, I doubt we'll see too many BG fans at the game being on a Friday night and on ESPN.

And as far as Novak sending out letters to the puppy students, why bother? He knows, as do the rest of us, that it would be a useless activity. For as you see, puppy fans can't read! 03-lol 03-lol 03-lol

Aw, c'mon now! NIU students are excellent readers. NIU does a fine job teaching its students to use refined English. Even our fight song was written in perfect English. I guess Zulu is not quite as big in DeKalb as it is in Bowling Green. If you guys would like to learn English, I am certain you could take a correspondence course from NIU. Or...just drive up the road a bit to Toledo. I know they speak English there! Ay, ziggy...huh??
