When I got into my office this morning I found a phone message from Jim Phillips thanking me for my email and letting him know about Air Force looking for home and homes.

He stated that NIU is looking for agreements that include us getting a return game in DeKalb. He also stated that he was going to have the assistant AD, Mr. Collins contact Air Force about the opportunity.

Just thought I would share this with my fellow Huskies.

GO NIU, THIS YEAR WE BEAT TOLEDO!

Good job COHuskie! It is nice to hear that the AD and others will at least listen to what fans communicate and in this instance, may actually do something with the thoughts!!

While it is not clear from CoHuskies desciption and post, I had hoped that our administration had already known about this Air Force possibility, and didn't need a sharp-eyed fan to advise them of this opportunity. Isn't there some sort of old boy football scheduling network that Collins is (or should be) a part of? Hope we aren't losing out on good games cause we ain't on the speed dial.......

Regardless, JP's call back and enthusiasm for following up with a fan's suggestions is outstanding.

Think Cary ever called a fan back? She would have looked at it accusing her department of not doing their job.

I remember Lukulos and me meeting her at Harry Caray's the week before we played the team down south last, when there was a NIU football luncheon with Joe. She came over to talk to us, and asked us what we thought of the new Field Turf. Lukulos asked her what about the logo at mid field (which wasn't on initiially). She said, she made a decision to proceed with the installation without it. Then she walked away in a tizzy. As if she was beyond reproach.

I have always had the opposite response from Cary whenever I called, emailed or approached her at luncheons with one of my goofy ideas or complaints.

Cary Groth was a first-class professional. The fact is somebody in the position of Athletic Director needs to insulate themselves from the "fanactics" now and then, otherwise they would never get anything done. Keep in mind the objective of most of these encounters (in person, via phone, via e-mail) is to impart "free advice" or to openly critique. It is the right of anybody to contact th AD to express views and the like. But it is not the obligation of the AD to personally respond to each and every person or to display a receptivity that goes beyond quick handshake and courteous cliche speak.

I think getting back with you about your "ideas" is a good indicator as to the why there was a problem with the athletics department. 03-razz

I liked Cary alot. Every game she would stop by our tailgate and chat for a few minutes, somtimes sitting down and staying for awhile. The last time she did was the WIU game after our "win" against UW. We chatted how Coach has them real close to being a very good team. We mentioned that we though it was great what the team had accomplished the last two years(5point loss ot Uof I) and the UW game and that with young teams it takes a few years to feel they can win the close games. We reitierated out faith in Novak, etc.

NIU lost that game and I never saw Cary walk the tailgating area again.

Cary Groth is already done good things at Reno and apparently has been well embraced. It was a good move for her and a good move for NIU to hire Jim Phillips. I will always have solid opinion of Groth. She did well by her alma mater.
