Its a big sportsbar chain in Tampa. Was the sponsor of the bowl game last year.

RE: Big East Bowl announcement
Complete article.

http://www.bigeast.org/ViewArticle.dbml?...=204937249

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The BIG EAST Conference has completed its bowl lineup by renewing deals with the Papajohns.com Bowl in Birmingham, Ala., and the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl in St. Petersburg, Fla. The conference has also signed a new agreement with the AutoZone Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tenn. BIG EAST Commissioner John Marinatto announced the changes. The conference will send its teams to two of these three games in each of the 2010-13 seasons.

“By all accounts the BIG EAST bowl lineup is stronger than it’s ever been.” said Marinatto. “We have aligned ourselves with great bowl games in first-class destinations.”

Papajohns.com Bowl
The BIG EAST Conference has extended its agreement with the Papajohns.com Bowl. The BIG EAST will face a team from the Southeastern Conference in the game. The new agreement will run through the 2013 season.

For the upcoming season, the Papajohns.com Bowl will be held on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011 at Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala. The game, in its fifth year, will be televised at noon ET on ESPN.

The Papajohns.com Bowl attracted a record crowd of 45,254 on Jan. 2 when Connecticut defeated South Carolina 20-7. BIG EAST teams have compiled a 4-0 record in the game.

“We’re very excited to extend our relationship with the Papajohns.com Bowl,” said Marinatto. “Our teams have had wonderful experiences in Birmingham and the bowl continues to grow each year. With the support of ESPN, a great local organizing committee in Birmingham and the ability to play an opponent from the Southeastern Conference, the BIG EAST is proud to be a part of the game.”

The Papajohns.com Bowl is operated by ESPN Regional Television, the nation’s largest syndicator of collegiate sports programming.

AutoZone Liberty Bowl
The BIG EAST is pleased to have the opportunity to play in college football’s seventh-oldest bowl game, the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. In an effort to provide the best opportunities for its student-athletes, the BIG EAST could send its representative to the AutoZone Liberty Bowl to play the champion from Conference USA or an opponent from the Southeastern Conference.

The AutoZone Liberty Bowl has a well established history with BIG EAST teams dating back to 1961, when Heisman Trophy winner Ernie Davis led Syracuse to a win over Miami. The Bowl has also hosted BIG EAST teams Louisville, Pittsburgh and West Virginia over the past 52 years.

“The AutoZone Liberty Bowl is one of college football’s great traditions,” said Marinatto. “I know any of our teams would enjoy the opportunity to go to Memphis and play in the game.”

The 52nd AutoZone Liberty Bowl will be played Friday, Dec. 31 at 3:30 p.m. ET and will be televised by ESPN.

Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl
The BIG EAST will continue its relationship with the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl which is played at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. The game is in its third year. The BIG EAST has won each of the first two games. Last season, Rutgers defeated Central Florida 45-24. The Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl also is operated by ESPN Regional Television.

“The growth of the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl in only two years has been extremely impressive,” Marinatto said. “St. Petersburg is a very attractive destination for BIG EAST teams and BIG EAST fans. We’re happy that we’re able to continue our agreement with the bowl.”

The Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl will be played on Tuesday, Dec. 21 at 8 p.m. ESPN will carry the game.

In addition to its success in the Papajohns.com Bowl and the Beef ‘O’Brady’s Bowl, BIG EAST teams have recorded a 16-6 bowl mark over the past four seasons.

2010 BIG EAST Bowl Lineup (in selection order)

BCS Bowl – BIG EAST Champion
Champs Sports Bowl – BIG EAST vs. ACC
Meineke Car Care Bowl – BIG EAST vs. ACC
New Era Pinstripe Bowl – BIG EAST vs. Big 12
Papajohns.com Bowl/AutoZone Liberty Bowl – BIG EAST vs. SEC or C-USA
Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl – BIG EAST vs. C-USA

RE: Big East Bowl announcement
Does anyone really understand the PPJ/Liberty sharing agreement. I don't. When would be send a team to Liberty, instead of PPJ. This is not clear. It just says that BE will send a team to 2 out of 3 of PPJ, Liberty, and St Pete. How is it decided whether BE plays SEC or CUSA. Can BE send a team to BOTH PPJ and Liberty (that would be 2 of 3, wouldn't it). This agreement is not clear.

RE: Big East Bowl announcement
FROM ESPN:

The league could send a team to the Liberty Bowl in Memphis instead of the Papajohns.com Bowl. The Big East would play either the Conference USA champion or an SEC opponent in the Liberty.

"The objective is to put teams in a pool to create the best matchups," Big East associate commissioner Nick Carparelli said.

Carparelli said the agreement should allow the Big East to appear in the Liberty Bowl at least once during that four-year span.

RE: Big East Bowl announcement
It looks like the new deal with the PapaJohn's/Liberty Bowl is somewhat similar to the old Gator/Sun Bowl agreement (except that teams won't be guarenteed a specific number of appearances in each bowl.) So, if my understanding is correct, this is how some hypothetical examples may workout

Scenario #1 Liberty: BE v. SEC PJ.com: C-USA v. SEC

C-USA Champ: Tulsa
5th pick in Big East: Louisville
SEC: Miss State, Kentucky

In this scenario, the Liberty may want to avoid taking Tulsa to pair Louisville against Miss St (potentially better TV match up and fan bases that would travel better to the game). That means that Tulsa would go to the PJ.com Bowl as C-USA champ to play Kentucky (avoids rematch with UofL),

Scenario #2 Liberty: C-USA v. SEC PJ.com: BE v. SEC

C-USA Champ: ECU
5th pick in Big East: Louisville
SEC: Kentucky, Miss St

In this scenario, the Liberty may want to avoid taking Louisville since a UL v. UK game would be a regular season rematch. In this case, Louisville would head to PJ.com bowl to face Miss St as its opponent

Scenario #3 Liberty: BE v. SEC PJ.com: C-USA v. Sun Belt

C-USA Champ: SMU
5th pick in Big East: Louisville
SEC: Arkansas, no more qualify
MAC: Toledo
Sun-Belt: Troy

In this scenario, the Liberty may want to avoid taking SMU to pair Louisville against Arkansas (potentially better TV match up and fan bases that would travel better to the game). That means that SMU would go to the PJ.com Bowl as C-USA champ. Since no more SEC teams would be bowl eligible, the C-USA champ would face Toledo (MAC is primary backup) or potentially a Troy (Sun-Belt has option to be selected once if geographic is right). In this case, Troy might get the nod due to geography.

Scenario #4 Liberty: BE v. SEC PJ.com: C-USA v. MAC

C-USA Champ: SMU
5th pick in Big East: Louisville
SEC: Arkansas, no more qualify
MAC: Toledo
Sun-Belt: MTSU

In this scenario, the Liberty may want to avoid taking SMU to pair Louisville against Arkansas (potentially better TV match up and fan bases that would travel better to the game). That means that SMU would go to the PJ.com Bowl as C-USA champ. Since no more SEC teams would be bowl eligible, the C-USA champ would face Toledo (MAC is primary backup) or potentially a MTSU (Sun-Belt has option to be selected once if geographic is right). In this case, Toledo might get the nod due to its higher ranking or if a sun-belt team went the year before.

Scenario #5 Liberty: C-USA v. SEC PJ.com: BE v. Sun Belt

C-USA Champ: Memphis
5th pick in Big East: Louisville
SEC: Ole Miss, no more qualify
MAC: Toledo
Sun-Belt: Troy

In this scenario, the Liberty may want to pair Memphis and Ole Miss. This means Louisville would go to the PJ.com Bowl. Since no more SEC teams would be bowl eligible, the C-USA champ would face Toledo (MAC is primary backup) or potentially a Troy (Sun-Belt has option to be selected once if geographic is right). In this case, Troy might get the nod due to geography.

Scenario #6 Liberty: C-USA v. SEC PJ.com: BE v. MAC

C-USA Champ: Memphis
5th pick in Big East: Louisville
SEC: Ole Miss, no more qualify
MAC: Toledo
Sun-Belt: MTSU

In this scenario, the Liberty may want to pair Memphis and Ole Miss. This means Louisville would go to the PJ.com Bowl. Since no more SEC teams would be bowl eligible, the C-USA champ would face Toledo (MAC is primary backup) or potentially a Troy (Sun-Belt has option to be selected once if geographic is right). In this case, Toledo might get the nod as primary backup.

RE: Big East Bowl announcement
UofL07, good analysis. The way I see it, this is simply another Gator/Sun hybrid. The BE will simply either send a team to PPJ or to Liberty. Combined, they get the BE#5 shared pick. They will most likely work together to get the best matchups. This is a pretty good deal. I'd rather play SEC, but the CUSA champ is ok too.

RE: Big East Bowl announcement
Getting the Liberty is huge. People were saying this could be our number 2 bowl a few years ago. Now we get it as a number 5.

I'm gonna miss the International bowl. Toronto is a great city to visit. (I visit Yankee stadium everyday in my commute so nothing special for me)

Speaking of that though. It kinda ironic with all the complaining about how hard it is to go to Canada because of the passport thing. Well thats nothing compared to going to the Fiesta bowl. In Canada all I had to do was show my passport at the border. In Arizona I need to keep it with me at all times. Apparently after reading the fine print of the new law, only Arizona ID's are valid (So my NY drivers license is a no no) and they can query me if I look suspicious. Not taking a risk for a cop to feel "not white" as suspicious.

RE: Big East Bowl announcement
everything is changing, and the bowls and networks want all the flexibility they can get. why would the liberty sign exclusively w/ CUSA for a longterm deal when some of the very schools that attract them to cusa in the first place may be playing in the big east in a few years?

Doesn't sound like the case according to Vingle (his part of CUSA seems to suggest to me that if Big East ever plays a C-USA team in Liberty, it won't be vs. its Champion):

According to Big East communications director Chuck Sullivan, a Big East team will participate in either the Papajohns.com Bowl or the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.

The Liberty Bowl, which annually plays host to the Conference USA champ, also has an agreement with the Southeastern Conference.

"The two bowls will work together to create the best matchups,'' Sullivan said.

A published report Tuesday night said the Big East must play in the Liberty Bowl once during the four-year contract, but a Liberty Bowl executive said that was not accurate.

The Papajohns.com Bowl, which also has an agreement with the SEC, is scheduled for noon on Jan. 8 at Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala. The Liberty Bowl is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on New Year's Eve.

The Big East will send its last team (if there are enough available) to the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl in St. Pete. Kickoff for that one is set for 8 p.m. on Dec. 21.
****
The Papajohns.com Bowl does carry a "contingency" agreement with Conference USA, but fans of those schools should only keep it in the back of their minds.

Alfred White, a C-USA assistant commissioner, said Tuesday that if the SEC did not fill the Liberty Bowl, C-USA could opt out and shop its champion elsewhere for a better matchup, and be able to move that team or another one into the Birmingham game.

That would take an unusual situation. Both Steve Erhardt, the Liberty Bowl's director, and White reiterated that the relationship between the bowl and C-USA is rock-solid.

That relationship not only stretches back to the founding of Conference USA in 1995, but even before that, when the bowl chose from a loosely affiliated group consisting of eventual C-USA charter members.

More explanation here. If SEC has 10 bowl teams (SEC will always get 2 BCS teams, IMO) every year, BE won't play in LIberty

agree
imo,
BE could possibly play there vs sec when only 1 sec avail
BE most likely would play there vs cusa if no sec teams
bottom line, its an improvement over last deal for BE in opponent and/or venue and its also a spot lower in BE order
