article today quoting novak published in Aurora BeaconNews and with a foto(unavailable on line) worth a thousand words.

NOTICE: The statement re: people thinking NIU should be competing in the BT was left dangling......as to suggest what?

My assumption is Novak views such thinking unrealistic.

With a healthy team , we are competitive and possibly beat Wisconsin last Saturday. I think NIU most years is on par with these Big 10 teams, they key to balancing out the W/L record is not any upgrade to talent, it is just getting these opponents into Huskie stadium, which hopefully we will 1 example of this by 2009 if JP doesnt fold on us.

RE: intrvw with Novak re: MAC & scheduling BCS - cyberdawg - 10-25-2007 12:12 PM

a big test game here, a big test game there each season for NIU is fine.

HELL.

QUESTION: Why do the big boys insert a few cupcakes of their own in a schedule each season?
ANSWER: Insurance to reach six+ wins.

When every week becomes a big test game like in BT, these current Huskies are too thin, too young, too undersized to compete week after week against better competition. I'm not convinced another year would make ALOT of difference for these players if they were to go head to head week after week against tuffer competition.

Simply because a different Huskie team faced a different Wisconsin team the past two meetings is no predictor of how a healthy 2007 Huskies team would fare against the current Badgers team. Much better obviosuly but not likely to make a HUGE difference in the game's outcome IMO. We weren't so good in September facing Iowa or SIU . Why would have a healthier team fared that much better against Wisky in midOctober?

Was CMU a healthy team vs ND State, Clemson etc etc.

How healthy was WMU when facing a murderer's row schedule early?

NIU was pummeling SIU until the injuries hit for the record.

NIU got beaten bad not because of a difference in skill Saturday, it was a difference in size. A severely depleted NIU team could not match up physically vs a healthy UW team. Granted the main difference between a higher end mid major team like NIU and a BCS team is the depth. However with the degree of injuries NIU has seen this year, even a deeper UW team could not have survived that and remain competitive. When first teamers are healthy and out there, the difference between NIU and ANY higher tier Big 10 team over the past 5 to 10 years IMO is negligible with the possible exceptions of a few of the GREAT teams like last year's Buckeyes.

To compete in the Big Tenleven or even in the Big twelve (which would be a more realistic step for NIU) you would need an athletic budget 10 to 12 times our size.

I would not say that could never happen but you would need to set it as an objective and put a plan in place to get there.

Perhaps start by having a couple of BCS teams on your schedule each year drawing down a big payday or two.

Perhaps having at least one home game in Chicago's SF each year to try to energize the alumni and then get some of them traveling to DeKalb. This too would bring another big payday.

Perhaps sell out many home dates and then have the money for stadium expansion.

Get on a major radio outlet in Chicago for more exposure.

Play winning football, hire a head coach that can string together several winning seasons and begin sending some talent to the NFL.

Hey, you know what some of what it would take is happening. It is still a long shot for NIU to move up but it is not impossible.

Meanwhile I kind of like the MAC. I hope that it continues to improve as a conference and continues to supply talent to the NFL. I just wish more MAC scools had better attendance. At times we look terrible when games are televised with fewer than 15,000 in attendance. I don't get it because the talent that plays in our stadiums each week is really pretty good.

RE: intrvw with Novak re: MAC & scheduling BCS - cyberdawg - 10-25-2007 12:42 PM

THAT is a BIG problem and we have heard before how the conf schools, commish and ADs were working on it.....not much to show for it thus far after two + seasons.

RE: intrvw with Novak re: MAC & scheduling BCS - NIU Chicago - 10-25-2007 01:38 PM

I am sure recruits love hearing Joe bad rap the quality of NIU - does he ever think of what he is saying - if I was another MAC coach I would pull out this quote all the time "if you play three you're gonna go 0-3 or 1-2, not 3-0" - that's Joe's thoughts about playing BCS teams!

Great mind-set Joe - even if you believe it and even if it true - KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Recruits don't want to play for coaches who have a loser mentality!!!

I am beginning to legitimately dislike coach Joe Novak...you think Boise State or South Florida's coach ever said anything like that? What a jag....

Yeah sometimes I wish Novak would not say so much, that quote did not sound good. Although I know when he prepares for a year, he is expecting to win them all. But I understand what you mean that this does not sound good.

clc, do you think the Hawks take down the B's tonight? Need a good rebound game after the Columbus game.

Id like to think we will come out and get a win tonight...khabibulin played his first bad game of the year on tuesday, and i really think a lot had to do with the poor defense too...Zyuzin is expected to be a scratch tonight after playing terrible lately, i think he is at a -5...so yes, i think we will get a W tonight...and probably a few more points from Kane :)

Although the SCORE is one of the major radio outlets in the city, and I am happy with the range it provides our radio broadcasts, I really wish we were on a station that would support us - or at least not make fun of us. It does not say much for the station when they belittle us. We pay those sophomoric bastards to carry our games. The least they can do is show us some support. How I wish we were on WGN or any station other than the SCORE - even WCKG 105.9.

You're insane. 44-3 wasn't enough for you? The NIU injuries aren't worth 41 points.

What part of 1-31-1 don't you understand?
MaddDawgz02 Wrote:they key to balancing out the W/L record...is just getting these opponents into Huskie stadium
Every Big Ten program has as many road wins in the past 14 months against Big Ten teams as NIU does in its 108 years history of football. 9 of the 11 Big Ten teams have won more road games against Big Ten teams in the last 14 months than NIU has in its entire 108 years history, home, away, or neutral, against the Big Ten. If it was all about home field when NIU plays Big Ten teams, why can't they win on the road like everybody else can? The answer:
MaddDawgz02 Wrote:is not any upgrade to talent,
It's all about talent. The majority of Big Ten teams have more talent than NIU does, and they usually do year in and year out.
You're flat delustional.

OSU's win over NIU last year was a talent disparity, with all due to respect to UW, they are not a very skilled football team but do have some impressive size and bulk. That is how they beat an undermanned Huskie team on Saturday. UIHuskie I saw the game, was there to see it.

You bring out the Huskies record vs the Big 10 but I would like you to go back and try and find how many of these games have been played at Huskie stadium, thanks.

I already pointed out to you it makes no difference where NIU has played the Big Ten teams. Every single Big Ten program has as many road wins against Big Ten teams in the last 14 months as NIU has wins anywhere in it's entire history against Big Ten programs.

For good measure though, I think the answer is 0, but for the reasons above, it really doesn't mean anything. You can probably count the number of times a Big Ten team has gone 1-31-1 on the road in conference play over any stretch of games on one hand. Illinois, for as bad as they've been since 2001, wasn't anywhere near that bad, and they WEREN'T an "on par" Big Ten team during that stretch. In fact, they were downright non-competitive for most of it, and still had 9 road wins over the past 8 years (a 32-road game stretch) in conference play prior to this season (in which they have 1 road Big Ten win).

In other words: teams "on par" with Big Ten teams (read: other Big Ten teams) CAN WIN ON THE ROAD AGAINST BIG TEN TEAMS. I don't know why that concept is so hard for you to grasp. The fact that NIU's games have been at Big Ten stadiums is irrelevant, because other Big Ten teams seem to do just fine winning road games here or there.

Wisconsin beats a healthy NIU team by at least 2 scores, probably more in Madison. There is a huge talent disparity, even when NIU is healthy, between the Badgers and Huskies.

Sometimes I wonder how long it takes you to convince yourself of something until you actually post it.
