This seems like a strange move. If Chacon get's healthy, he can be an effective starter. Even in Coors.

I agree with you. This is rather odd!!

Wow....can we say "blown-saves"?

Don't think he'll do too well, SL?

Yes, very strange indeed, he was goin to the all-star game last year without his injury. Perhaps the nature of his injury means he no longer has the strength to pitch a ful 5+ innings.

Eric Gagne, John Smoltz. Chacon could be awesome. Or not.

A good starter (which Chacon was) is better than having a good closer (which Chacon may be) any day. Smoltz became a closer because he was hurt, Gagne became a closer because he was a bad starting pitcher. Unless this is related to an injury IMO it is a bad move.

i agree. that was my point awhile ago, when i said that schmidt and prior could be great closers. their teams' wouldn't do that because a great SP is much better than a great closer.

Comparing those pitchers to Chacon is ridiculous. First off, Smoltz and Gagne have stuff that is just lights out.....Chacon doesnt come close...I mean...not even close. He has an average at best breaking ball, decent at best changeup, and a stiff fastball though at times is wicked. He had a career GB/FB year which probably wont last and once it goes up....say hello to HR bombs.....closer? Ugh...I will stay away.

I dont think anyone ever thought Gagne's stuff was nasty before he became a closer. His stuff was decent as a starter but very effective as a closer because he is one of the few closers who throws more than 2 pitches. He is nasty because you never know what is coming when he is pitching.

I think GAGne had good stuff as a starter, he just didn't have a starters mentality.

Not really. Go over to BA and read Gagne's prospect reviews...they were average but they still pointed to Gagne having lights out stuff if he could change his mechanics. Chacon has nothing that either of the other two have.
