The Akron loss took some luster off this one, but this still is a huge tilt. Temple was great against Akron, but that could have been the Zips mailing it in. The Owls have a superstar running back, but maybe the defense can load the box and take advantage of a young QB.

Our young QB and his receivers will have to make some plays down the field. The Flashes could also use a running game. Any word on Terry's status? I like Archer in passing situations out of the backfield, but he isn't ready to run the ball inside the tackles.

Reno79 picked this up from yesterday's RC:

ONE BENEFIT TO OFFICIAL’S CALL — More than a few KSU fans have asked if the school plans to protest Wisconsin-Green Bay’s men’s basketball victory over the Flashes on Sunday in the Hispanic College Fund Classic at the M.A.C. Center.

UWGB won the game on a last-second shot that arguably never should have counted after a series of calls that could be debated.

“Now, I’m the athletic director for Kent State, but I think the ball was out of bounds,” said Laing Kennedy, referencing the play.

Kent State has asked the Mid-American Conference to review the play. The Flashes’ only real hope is an apology from the league, although an internal reprimand on the official may be more likely.

More importantly, the Flashes have decided to learn from their own frustration.

From now on, Kent State will have a video monitor available at the scorer’s table to give officials a chance to review instant replay.

Technically, officials could not have overruled Sunday’s game-winning basket even after noticing the foul or the ball rolling out of bounds on replay. But they may have been able to determine the play took more than three seconds when only 2.7 remained on the overtime clock.

“We have the capabilities to have instant replay available,” said Kennedy. “Everything is in place. From now on, we are going to have a monitor at the scorer’s table whether the game is on television or not. We have a great system with the (stadium’s video boards), there is no reason not to have a monitor. It won’t change what happened last night, but it will be one more little step in making our facility first class.”

Greetings from down the road in Youngstown. Your Flashes travel to take on my Penguins this Wednesday evening at 7:30pm, as part of a DH with the lady Guins and lady Flashes.

Wanted to post a few things for you guys:
1) If you can't make it, you can watch the game online for FREE at this link:
http://www.horizonleaguenetwork.tv/young...state.html
Just click the Kent @ YSU feed right next to the video.

2) If you do come, bring your Giant Eagle Advantage Card. If you do, you can buy one ticket, and get a second one free. I believe the chairbacks are $12 bucks and the GA seats are $8 bucks, so definitely take advantage of that deal.

3) YSU returns 10 letterwinners and has, arguably, its best team in the last decade. We have depth at every position and got some promising young talent. We aren't the same team you guys have faced the past few years. For YSU, this is a game many believe is a must-win if we truly hope to have as good of a season as we hope to.

Anyways hope to see a nice Flash contingency at Beeghly Center on Wednesday evening, but if you can't make it, watch the game on the Horizon League Network link above!

If you want to interact with YSU fans, check this site out:

Quote:Before the 2008-09 season tipped off, Green Bay coach Tod Kowalczyk said he liked his team. He had good reason to, as it turned out. The Phoenix had their best season in at least a decade. The 13 Horizon League wins were the most since 1995-96 and would have been good enough to win the title had Butler not surprised everyone in an alleged major rebounding year. The 22 wins were the most overall since 1998-99. The first postseason bid since 1996 was offered by the College Basketball Invitational.

Green Bay got mileage out of a veteran lineup by leading the HL in scoring (72.7 ppg), shooting (45.1 percent), three-point shooting (41.1 percent) and free-throw accuracy (78.1 percent).

"It was a team that I thought continued to get better," said Kowalczyk, "a very efficient offensive team. It was a fun team to coach."

Despite losing two starters and a third senior who led the team in scoring, Kowalczyk professes good vibes for the upcoming winter as well:

"We lose three very good players, but I certainly think the foundation of the program is back and we've got four seniors," he said. "I like this team. We've got an opportunity to be good."

The Phoenix will be tested right away, playing in the Hispanic College Fund Classic against UAB, Samford and host Kent State. The date circled on most calendars in Green Bay is Dec. 9. That's when the Wisconsin Badgers come to the Resch Center for the first time since 2002, when they helped open the building.

Coming off its best season in a decade, Green Bay hopes to keep the momentum going. The good news is the backcourt combo of Ramon Fletcher and Troy Cotton. Fletcher is among the better point guards in the league and Cotton one of the best three-point shooters. The bad news is losing three vets like HL scoring leader Ryan Tillema, Mike Schachter and Terry Evans. There goes a big chunk of the offense, including some excellent free-throw shooting. The Phoenix has a host of newcomers to help the transition, and if a couple of them get up to speed quickly, Green Bay should be all right.

This could be a different looking team, a more athletic one with the ability to play faster. If that is indeed the case, it will help make up some of the lost offensive firepower.

"We'll be better defensively and rebounding," Kowalczyk said. "My concern is offensively, being able to get the new guys integrated quickly. We're going to have one, two or three guys play a very big role. I don't know which ones yet, but hopefully, three of them. We've got to see how quickly we can get them on the same page as our returning players."

Should be interesting to see how we play today after two different performances so far. One of the best things so far is that we have beaten two very different kinds of teams. On paper, this seems like a favorable matchup in terms of style of play than matchups that feature either a Princeton offense or a team with a strong inside game.

Quote:Almost everything that happened in Mike Davis' first two seasons at UAB built toward an expected breakthrough in 2008-09, but it didn't happen the way he envisioned it. Though the Blazers posted a solid third-place finish in C-USA and made a second straight NIT, Davis' third season was in many ways a disappointment -- not just because UAB missed some good chances to earn an NCAA Tournament bid but because a window of opportunity for the program closed shut.

With four senior starters departing -- three of whom were all-conference players -- it was obvious UAB would have to start over with a new nucleus in 2009-10. Now, with just three familiar faces from last season and a mix of freshmen, junior-college players, foreigners and transfers filling out the rest of the roster, Davis' version of Extreme Makeover makes UAB the league's biggest mystery.

"I'm excited about putting this team together, but there's uncertainty," Davis said. "I'm just as puzzled as anyone. But I know we're not going to be 12th [in C-USA]; I can tell you that."

While that assessment doesn't set the bar particularly high, the reality is that any expectations for UAB this season would be based strictly on guesswork.

This will be the toughest test of the weekend. I expect the shots to fall tonight after the first game jitters are gone.

Quote:The funny thing about the Bulldogs is they don't look overpowering on paper, with no big scorers, no big rebounders and nothing that physically intimidates opposing teams. They scored only 61.6 per game and got out-rebounded by nearly seven per game.

At the same time, there's a lot of skill and experience here. This is not a team to take lightly. Bryan Friday is an all-conference-caliber scorer, the team has experience at the "P" position, and there's a solid corps of three-point shooters.

The Princeton offense relies on forcing the defense to make decisions and then reacting to those decisions. If it's done right, it forces the defense to commit and assures you'll get good shots, so the key is to make enough of those shots. As long as the Bulldogs can keep getting layups or hitting three-pointers, they should be OK.

They've averaged about 16 wins a year over the last five seasons, they got 16 last year and there's a good chance they'll beat that mark this season.

We will need good defensive discipline and be able to disrupt their offensive flow. They have most of decent team back this year.

Wondering if anyone can name the seniors from that season (without looking it up). That was my freshman year and I was a manager on the team so I actually know them without having to look it up. Let's play the name game.

Folks, I believe in taking them one at a time, however this weekend we owe Mike Davis big. He cost us our Final Four bid in 2002 as the head coach of Indiana. Everyone needs to show up to the MAC Center and ride the Blazers until they break.
Glad basketball is here since last week Doug Martin proved his true colors.
