He just took a shot at ETSU and it's fans. Maybe that wasn't his intent, but he was saying that he thought Bartow has done a good job here. Made a comment, not a direct quote but said when you do good things, make it to the tournament, they're like, well we should do that every year, the fans, well it's not as good a job as they think it is. And then turns around and says he wouldn't play us. I don't care what he's done, I don't need some coach who's never been here telling me what I should or shouldn't expect from my basketball team. Maybe he should worry about who his players are hanging with and if they're taking money, or whether or not his players took their own SAT's. Now granted, I'm no coach, but I do want the best for and from my team. And sure, it's not what I want it to be. But I don't need Calipari saying those things especially when he was basically thrown softballs the whole interview!!!

The recent wishful thinking on this board got me to thinking-

Are we at a point right now that we are READY to have Dr. Paul Stanton leave?

For years the hope has been Dr. Paul Stanton would leave, a new President come in, and- Voila!- ETSU would be okay.

University High will get a new building. Professors will start making more money. The University will have a different direction than "Medical School first and everything else fifth" and, of course, football will be reinstated.

Here's the problem I see with that. Unless the new Prez has a vision for improving athletics, the way, say, Florida International's President demanded his program have Division FBS/Division I-A football, Stanton has laid out a plan for athletics that would seemingly be hard to reverse.

Furthermore, there is probably as much of a chance that a hypothetical President would be in favor of dropping all sports to Division III as there is he/she would like to see ETSU become the next Marshall or South Florida.

The problem is Stanton and Mullins have laid out a plan for their vision of ETSU sports. And it is a plan that not only doesn't have football, but really is geared to have ETSU stay in the A-Sun.

The facilities being built are to stay competitive in the A-Sun, not for what is best for the community (which would be to have a football program providing scholarships for local kids instead of an obscenely funded golf program for Eurpoeans and having an arena to make the area more cosmopolitan). The A-Sun does not have football and does not rank highly in basketball. It is at its most competitive in baseball and softball with its Florida schools and, while the teams aren't all that good, they also require soccer.

Look at what facilities ETSU are building.

Then there's Mullins. The path ETSU athletics have taken are exactly what I feared, the path of a tennis coach almost thinking "Well, now that I AM IN CHARGE, we'll show 'em that this non-spectator sport is just as important as anything else!"

And we get that on here, with the posters, presumably plants from the athletic department, saying that "A college moves to a larger conference because of its ENTIRE athletic program," a statement that isn't even remotely true.

But if you're a new President, do you say "NO! NO! NO! This is all wrong!" or do you realize the entire athletic department has bought in to this?

I do think the first step of enlightenment has happened with the Dr. Larimore presentation.

But it's going to take more than that, and I'm not sure if a new President was hired tomorrow he could make the changes necessary to make ETSU what we want it to be athletically, even if he shared that vision.

What has to happen is more of a public demand. Thankfully, we have it here, but is that enough?

A new president will probably not be able to bring football in overnight. But as long as his or her agenda is to restore ETSU to its former self...then we should support them through whatever.

From todays JC Press.

In the meantime, though, ETSU has moved further on its vision to plant a baseball stadium on several adjacent acres, and the city of Johnson City has progressed in its plans for flood control along Brush Creek, which borders the University Edge property on the south. As a result, the Project Assistance Agreement includes several elements related to those city and ETSU objectives.

The most tangible public benefits that will come along with construction of the three-building complex — which will have nearly 600 furnished rooms in its 192 units and also include a clubhouse and pool — start with stormwater.

The agreement commits Hallmark to creating a stormwater detention area capable of holding not just its own runoff, but “additional runoff from the baseball site and lessen the stormwater flow on Brush Creek into the downtown.” The developer, whose work will be overseen by Continental Building Systems, is also to relocate water and sewer lines under the baseball stadium.

Another public benefit will give walkers and bikers a safe, pleasant route from Watauga Avenue to University Parkway. Hallmark is to build a public recreational trail along that stretch, ending just across University Parkway from the plaza area currently being constructed by Atmos Energy.

The final major benefit will provide a major boost to ETSU’s baseball stadium plans. The agreement commits Hallmark to grading the baseball stadium site, which should save ETSU more than six figures.

The TIF monies not spent on the projects listed above are still limited in use, but far more than $2.75 million of the project, which Kirk estimated will be valued at about $23 million, is eligible.

Kirk acknowledged that a nice ballpark next door should make the apartments more attractive to renters, most of whom are expected to be students.

“We’re excited to have that,” he said. “I can’t wait to have something like that manicured and right next to us.

Refuting some points made by Northeast Tiger

With the original thread about why ETSU isn't in the SoCon going more than 100 posts, I think people may have lost track of a few points Tiger made.

He constantly talks about Memphis being a struggling football program and points to a mid-week game in which the Tigers only drew 4,100 fans as evidence the team isn't making it.

What he has failed to mention is that while playing a game on a Wednesday night is going to affect ticket sales negatively (check out Major League Baseball Attendance on weekdays compared to weekends for evidence), in this case Memphis is going to attract LOTS of TV revenue from ESPN.

For the sake of, I'm guessing, 25,000 in-stadium fans, hundreds of thousands more will actually watch the game since it's on nationwide TV on perhaps the leading cable channel in the country. I remember listening to a caller on a sports talk show in Pittsburgh say he was more excited to watch Memphis-East Carolina than the post-season baseball telecast that night.

So they actually took in far more revenue by limiting the gate. The dirty little secret about Miami football is that they never drew a whole lot of fans (the 1998 game against ETSU drew 36,000), but the money they took in from TV allowed them to become THE program of the '80s.

BOWL GAMES- You said that football teams LOST money on the small bowl games. Memphis has made bowls in five of the last six seasons.

This arguement doesn't make any sense whatsoever. If teams lost money going to bowl games, why would they play them? Why would there be an overabudence of bowl games in FBS? Why would teams accept bids?

The minimum payout a bowl gives, the last time I looked, was $750,000. Most give more than a million.

BUILDING AN 8,000-10,000 SEAT ARENA FOR ADDITIONAL EVENTS- You spoke of additional revenue from a potential new ETSU arena for minor league hockey, circuses, concerts, etc. being minimal.

I found out this week Pitt charges $14,500 for use of an outside event at their relatively new basketball arena, the Pederson Events Center. Hence, when the Pittsburgh XPlosion, a minor league basketball team, used the arena for their games recently, they paid Pitt $14,500 a game to use it.

In the ECHL, a hockey team plays 36 home regular season games (not including preseason or playoffs).

This means that even if the team didn't make the playoffs, you're easily talking about $500,000 in rent a year.

Now add into the mix-

Percentage of concessions

Percentage of ad revenue (on the boards, on the ice, etc.)

Parking revenue

Percentage of tickets (let's say ETSU got 50 cents a ticket. If an ECHL team drew 3,000 fans a game that's $57,000)

Additional naming rights. If a new arena is only used for 30 ETSU basketball games, the price to make the new barn "Dr. Enuf Arena" would be far less than it would if there were multiple events and tenants.

The first stadium I'm aware of that utilized naming rights was Rich Stadium in Buffalo, NY, where the Bills play. In 1974 the Bills sold their naming rights to Rich (I have no idea what they produce) for $400,000 a year.

Granted, that's an NFL stadium. That's also 1974 costs. I'm using it as a guide because for comparison, the Steelers got $57 million, if memory serves, to name their new stadium "Heinz Field" in 2001, and it was said the Steelers took less on their naming rights so they could have a Pittsburgh based company sponsor them.

So I'm using $400,000 as a guide. I think based on what I know, it would be a legitimate starting point for a mid-major basketball arena's naming rights today using no other factor than "1974 NFL rates = 2009 mid-major Division I basketball rates."

If I can triple the events held in such an arena, who knows what I can get for the naming rights for my new barn? A million a year, starting point?

In other words, the revenues produced from a new arena could conceivably cover the costs of starting up a college football program.

A softball field, or a golf facility, won't.

With basketball season about to start, we will have more arguements on the board from posters who are just happy the Bucs are playing basketball and having a winning season.
The hopes of previous seasons to actually build on the previous NCAA appearance into a nationally ranked program will be called too excessive. We'll be told that 6,000 is a sellout despite 6,000 empty seats, we'll have a commentator tell us this team is better than the ones of the Mister or Wadood eras, we'll be told everything is great and we should just be happy with a first-round NCAA loss as long as it's close and, hey, even if it isn't, wasn't it fun to make the tournament?

And if we say we want more than the same old rerun of a first-round NCAA defeat or if we theorize that since we now have a coach who isn't going to use ETSU as a stepping stone that the program could do bigger and better things, we'll be called
WE LIVE TO PUT DOWN ETSU ACCOMPLISHMENTS
I don't know about you, but I would say that the people who think all ETSU can ever do is be a football-less school that lives to get their heads chopped off by big boys, let alone Belmont, are the negative ones.

I might need a quick history lesson on the reason that ETSU left the socon, but didn't we leave the conference because we dropped football? This doesn't make any sense to me and i would love it if someone could fill me in on what i'm missing.
so, what is it exactly that is keeping ETSU out of the SoCon?
