**** I posted this for the general board and thought it may as well be here too for fans not in hoops mode yet and needing to catch up.

First week impressions of Belmont's up and down start after listening to their first three games are:

1. Played a very nice game against a very solid Portland State team (won by 7). Portland State is picked second in the Big Sky and is coming off back-to-back NCAA appearances. We didn't blow them out, but controlled the game.

2. I thought we were very game against a top 15 Washington team on the road. We hung in there nicely. Lost by 18 against a team with a tremendous backcourt matching up with our very, very, very young backcourt. They hit a three and had a fast break dunk in the last minute to stretch it out a bit more than it was. We didn't have a chance, but didn't get humiliated by any means. Our inside guys showed there were up to the task against Washington's big scoring-wise, but we got drilled on the boards.

3. Wright State (solid mid-major and picked first in the Big Sky) got out to a fast start on us and put us in a big hole. We dug out and played a respectable second half, but really weren't in it in the second half. Lost by 9.

General thoughts:
- We've got very nice young talent
- Ian Clark is averaging 14 ppg as Fr. He can shoot, penetrate and pull up. Very nice offensive game.
- Our bigs are pretty good. Hedgepeth (So.) continued his solid finish and is averaging 13 ppg (terrible rebounding stats though). Saunders (R-So.) is averaging 11. Keaton Belcher (Sr.) has been showing a little more versatility than being just a tall shooter. He's averaging 12 ppg with a greater variety.
- Jordan Campbell is a good shooter, but hasn't been showing it. When he breaks out, we'll be much better.
- PG time is still split between Johnson and Hanlen. Need one to step up.
- We are negative on assist to turnover right now by -9

Attached is the Tennessean's "great" preview on Belmont's upcoming season. ETSU fans, this is one of the reasons we have trouble filling the Curb. We get no local media attention, and when we do, it is really bad.

They mention that we only have one starter back, which is technically true except for the fact that Jordan Campbell is back after missing nearly all of of last year injured. They didn't even bother to mention Scott Saunders or Ian Clark, who will very likely be starters.

They did touch on the PG battle, which is going to be interesting, but they never even mentioned Hanlen's name.

Lastly, while I think Blake Jenkins could be a very good player they focus on the easy angle...that he's from Knoxville. He'll have trouble competing for playing time this year while several other newcomers will likely start.

Typical Tennessean, typical Mike "I Can't Keep a Beat" Organ. I don't know whether to be sad or thankful that we won't see another Belmont article until the Lipscomb game.

- Scott Saunders – the guy is big and more athletic than I thought…very strong and good around the rim…excellent FT shooter (it is obvious and Byrd commented on it too)…disruptive when he’s on defense…definite starter and a top 3 center in the league at least…didn’t get to see short jumpers much, but very capable around the rim…solid rebounder…best center we’ve had since the Sonn/Mark days. HE’S ONLY A SOPH TOO!! This guy could turn into a real beast
- Ian Clark – lefty…looks to have a pretty complete game with a good looking long shot (didn’t make any threes but one went way deep in the bucket and spun out…hopefully that doesn’t indicate poor rotation on his shot)…not afraid of the mid-range game and looks comfortable at it…hit a couple of floaters and finished around the rim…definite starter and potential star for us down the road, but I do want to check out his quickness a bit.
- Kerron Johnson – he’ll be good too…very aggressive penetrator and Byrd says he’s a tremendous FT shooter (hit all of them that I remember)…Byrd says he’ll be at the line a bunch this year which to me indicates his levels of playing time and coaching confidence…hit a nice pull-up three…quick, but not what I’d call elite quickness, not Renfroe fast…solidly built
- Trevor Noack – much more sturdy than I had anticipated and confident inside…willing to shoot the three, but can’t tell yet if that’s warranted…probably won’t get minutes above Hedgepeth…his playing time will depend upon how much time Belcher sees at the 3 vs. the 4…can contribute in a Hedgepeth last year type of role
- Brandon Baker – tough time shooting the ball and several hustle plays…hard to see him in the mix for really, really significant playing time from the short time I watched, but it was only a snapshot so who knows (who knows on any of this analysis really since I don’t see them day-in and day-out)…good size though
- Blake Jenkins – if anyone looks the part, it is Blake…long, rangy, athletic, and strong enough for a freshman…seemed to handle the ball well enough, but still seemed to be searching for his role..handled it quite a bit on the outside and got some rebounds…if his skill set is equal to the way he looks, he could be a significant contributor one day

- Went to Meet the Bruins last night. Poor turnout overall in my opinion. I don’t know how many showed up last year, but there were half as many folks there as I expected. Pepsi came strong with free drinks and Belmont t-shirts.
- Byrd wore a microphone and he was good at it. However, he didn’t seem to really enjoy that too much. Really preached ball security and taking shots within the offense (at times was not happy with either aspect). Lots of praise for hustle. Down the stretch he was really trying to pump up the blue team who was trailing to play hard, aggressive defense and they responded.
- He introduces all of the players and let them dunk. Hanlen instead shot about a 35 foot three instead and airballed. That may be the last airball we see from him. He can shoot it.
- We will be a force inside this year. However, the bigs had several turnovers early. They seem to know each other’s tendencies pretty well right now.
- Since they were playing each other and Johnny Rice was out (foot troubles) and MD was at class, there was very little subbing during a 20 minute scrimmage. The guys were getting pretty gassed out there. Byrd even tinkered with some pressing. They were going hard and they had trouble making shots down the stretch when they were wearing down.
- The game had two referees. Byrd overruled one of their calls on an out-of-bounds play. He was playfully critical of them on the mic too.
- Overall there is a lot of potential there, but we have a pretty steep learning curve. Some of the pre-conference games may be brutal this year. We won’t be taking teams like Tennessee to the wire this year. I am thinking maybe 5th place in the ASun, but tons of potential for the future.

I’ll post player-specific stuff soon.

Byrd said recently in the City Paper, that most every starting position is open. Ian Clark and Hedgepeth were both cited as having impressive preseason workouts.
My guess is Johnson starts at point guard some time this season and maybe even sooner rather than later, but Byrd has been loyal over the years with returning players so I would expect Hanlen to start early. Maybe we can get a feel at the scrimmage if Johnson will start right away.

I was checking out my rivals.com account a few minutes ago and noticed Belmont had their first offer for players graduating high school in 2010, 6'9 215lbs center from Chattanooga, Tennessee (Tyner Academy).

Other schools that have offered him: UCONN, Murry State, Virginia Commonwealth
Other schools he is interested in who have not offered him: Georgia, Drake
Scheduled visits: UCONN, Virginia Commonwealth, Drake

This is what the National Hoops Report had to say about Bradley.

Michael Bradley, Tennessee Tigers – It happens at least once a year with me. I’ll be leaving a venue to slide over to another game only to be stopped in my tracks. That happened in Orlando at the AAU Nationals when Bradley walked past me. I immediately cancelled my scheduled game to watch and took in the 6-9 center. He’ll be a fall riser, too. A no-brainer high-major kid, Bradley was one of the best “where in the world did he come from?” stories of July. Look for him to be a top 100 guy nationally and keep on stopping people in their tracks.

I'm not holding my breath over this guy because everything I've read projects him to go to a high-major school, but it sure is nice to see us going after someone with size and offering him early!

On the ETSU board, they are having discussion about lack of size inside on their team. This has been a problem for Belmont in the past. Right now, we seem to have some size with Scott Saunders at 6-10 250 pounds, Mic Hedgepeth at 6-9 230 pounds, Mike Dejworek 6-11 235 pounds, and Keaton Belcher at 6-9 215. Keaton really plays more of a small forward, but the others play a 4 or 5 position.

I think 3 of those 4 will be on the floor quite a bit. I would like to see Mike have a solid year in a back up role, but I’m not holding my breath. In the past, we did well with a smaller line up and I think ETSU will do well with the small lineup this year, but my question is this, will size help us out in the smaller ASun?

I checked the newly released 2009-10 rosters for the league or last year’s roster and announced signings for ASun teams. Just based on height, the ASun size contest would go to Kennesaw State. Here are the number players over 6-8 by team.

5 – Kennesaw State
What teams will size (or lack of it) help or hurt?

5 – Kennesaw State
4 – Belmont
I know as a group, the ASun needs to win more of the games against other mid-majors as much as winning a few of the games against major D1 schools. However, winning the big ones is fun and raises the ASun’s reputation. Below is a summary of some of the big name teams that ASun teams are playing this year (some have not been release yet and may not happen). Which game/s do you feel ASun teams win this year?

This past year was exciting. However, I thought the team underperformed as a team. Rick Byrd mentioned before the season that senior led teams can sometimes underperform. He seemed to think that on a mid-major level, players know that basketball is about over for them and they begin to concentrate on the future career.

As a season ticket holder, I have watched several of our outstanding shooters seemingly lose productivity in the latter years of their career at Belmont. So, I went back and looked at the records of our 1,000 point club since we went division 1. I was wrong in thinking that our shooter’s effectiveness decreased most years, but it was pretty consistent that shooting percentages dropped in the senior season.

Here they are the shooters from the 1,000 point club:

Wes Burtner – Best 3 pt. percentage as freshman, worst as a senior. His scoring average dropped from 20.1 as junior to 17.7 as a senior.

Justin Hare – 3 pt percentage and scoring average dropped each year from his sophomore high.

Steve Drabyn – 3 pt. percentage dipped in senior season, but his scoring average increased.

Josh Goodwin – 3 pt. percentage dropped from .456 as a junior to .320 in his senior season and his scoring average was cut to almost half from his junior year.

My question is this, why do our shooters seem to cool off in their senior season. Is this common for most college players? Do other college teams experience this? And, is Byrd correct in his assessment of senior players?

Okay guys, this is a slow time of year so I decided to go to the ESPN recruiting site and do some number crunching on recruits. No one has evaluation of recruits down to a science, so this is just for entertainment purposes. I hope our ETSU friends will join in, so here goes.

Only 7 teams in the ASun registered evaluated recruits on ESPN. I compared two numbers, a team’s average evaluation score and the team’s average ranking for their recruits. By the way, this does not include JUCOs. Here’s what I got.

For average recruit evaluation score...

ETSU 80.67
Jacksonville	80.33
Belmont 80.00
Stetson 80.00
Lipscomb 78.66
N. Florida 59.50
Campbell (SoCon)	40.00

For average recruit ranking by position…

Lipscomb 109.0
Stetson 133.0
ESTU 134.3
Belmont 139.3
Jacksonville	141.7
N. Florida Unranked player, could not average
Campbell (SoCon)	Unranked player, could not average

How would you rank each raw recruiting class?

Also, how would you rank each class weighted by the coaching ability of each team’s head coach?
